My Chipotle Winner Oso Closo Is Fond Of Veggie Burrito

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 in Bands, Business, Food & Drink, Restaurants, Videos.

Chipotle restaurant held a contest to see what band could come up with the best ad.

The winners, a Denton, TX band named Oso Closo, won and now are $10,000 richer with a burrito in their name soon to be available.

Although the band sings of “steak, peppers and onions, black beans, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, roasted chili-corn salsa, and tomato red-chili salsa,” band mate Chris McQueen says that’s not necessarily what you have to get and recognizes the vegetarians who might like Chipotle.

“No one in the band is vegetarian, but I am fond of the veggie burrito, so I’ve already considered that. I feel fairly confident that your average Chipotle burrito-ista could handle an ‘Oso Closo, no steak.'”

Rock on!

Travis isn’t the only celebrity that knows Spiral’s got the good stuff.

And Silverstein’s Shane Told got a sweet tooth for the Diner’s brownies in the past.

Andrew G All Funked Out From Funky Pies Vegan Deliciousness

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 in Actors, Business, Celebrity Tweets, Restaurants, TV Hosts.

Leona Lewis Media Call

Andrew G. had the chance to Tweet about a vegan pie just before the carbs took their toll.

“Vegan pie Floater from Funky Pies in Bondi, nap soon. Coz that’s how I roll, huge serve of carbs then straight to sleep…”

Funky Pies is a great place to catch some vegan food in an Australian eatery that’s eco-conscious in every aspect of its business.

Besides serving great vegan food like “Brekkie’ Rolls” of Veg-sausage mix, beans, tomato, ‘bacon’ bits and “Funky Chunky” and “No Wurry Curry,” Funky Pies using biodegradable packing in all their take out products, serves fair trade coffee, and boasts its staff uniforms are made in sweatshop free factories.

Angie Stephenson, the self titled “Director of Funk” says on the website about Funky Pies’ specialization:

“That’s an easy one, who doesn’t love a good pie? You don’t have to be Aussie to enjoy a nice hot tasty pie with deliciously flaky pastry. You can get dodgy pies though, so I wanted to provide a product that was not only quick to cook and easy to eat, but a healthy alternative to the more common ‘meat’ pie where you are really not sure what part of an animal you are eating…mmm.”

We hear you, Angie. Mystery meat is totally different kind of funky.

Fred Mascherino took a moment to Tweet his love for breakfast food at the Chicago Diner.

“Vegan French toast the The Chicago Diner- kickin’ ass!”

Chicagoans know Chicago Diner has the best in vegan and vegetarian home style breakfast items like tofu mock egg scrambles, seitan sausages, and biscuits with vegan gravy.

And Fred’s not the only celebrity to order off the menu.

Ellen DeGeneres likes the Diner’s seitan hot wings so much, she had them Fed’exed to her studios in California.

Eh, yeah we know it’s not so green to fly food that far.

But hey, the food was vegan so it took some of the weight off Ellen’s footprint.

For a more environmentally friendly way to enjoy the Diner’s hot wings, take a train to the Windy City on a road trip and stock  up on meals like Sweet and Sour Tofu, vegan Chicago Style Hot Doggs, and Parmesan “Chickin” Caesar salad.

If you were a fan of alternative female rockers of the 90s, you probably remember Sarah Betten from K’s Choice, known for their haunting and melodic song, I’m Not An Addict.

Betten and her band mates will be in Asheville, North Carolina recording some new tunes and there are a couple of hot spots she likes to frequent, Mellow Mushroom and Earth Fare.

“We’ll definitely have to go to Mellow Mushroom,” Betten told charletteobserver.com. “There’s a great vegetarian place that I know I’ll hit a couple times. Earthfare’s close to the studio.”

If you head to Asheville, after picking up your pizza from Mellow Mushroom, you can swing by Earth Fare to stock up your home or apartment with natural and organic foods.

Some cool facts about Earth Fare, from its website.

1. Earth Fare became the first supermarket to ban high fructose corn syrup in 2004.

2. Earth Fare also removed all products with hydrogenated oil or partially hydrogenated oils from its shelves 13 years ago-before everybody caught onto the trans fat bandwagon.

Gunnar Peterson, Celebrity Fitness Expert, Promotes Silk Soy Milk

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, September 17th, 2009 in Business, Food & Drink.

3rd Annual Matt Leinart Foundation Bowling Night

Gunnar Peterson, a celebrity fitness trainer, has teamed up with Silk Soy Milk to promote the dairy free goodness drink.

“I encourage all of my clients to choose foods that satisfy their hunger and supply them with enough energy and fuel to get through a busy day,” said Peterson.

“Silk soymilk is one of the easiest ways to add protein into your daily diet. With nutrient-rich ingredients like whole harvested soybeans, it’s really a perfect protein for any time of the day.”

Peterson has worked with many professional sports players in the NFL, NBA, NHL and NCAA.

We’re not sure of Gunnar’s vegetarian status. Would it have been more suitable to have vegetarian Biggest Loser coach Bob Harper promote Silk?

“Soymilk contains all of the essential amino acids for optimum health and experts agree that soy protein is comparable to the protein found in dairy, meat and eggs,” Peterson added. “But, unlike many animal-protein sources, Silk is low in saturated fat and 100 percent cholesterol free.”

Yay!

Now show us the soybean mustache, Gunnar.

Carrie Underwood Sandwich: A Meaty Misspelling

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 in Business, Female Singers, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Carrie Underwood and her dog Ace at Los Angeles airport

There’s an eatery called Belles Cafe in Willinston, Vermont that has a sandwich named after Carrie Underwood.

There are two problems with this.

Her name is spelled “Carry” in the sandwich title and it is maheeeatay, as a fan on carriefans.com found out.

“I went to my local deli and bakery called Belles Cafe yesterday with my cousin and we were looking at the menu and she yells “omg I bet you are getting the Carrie Underwood.” i didn’t know what she was talking about so I look up at the menu and they have a sandwich called Carrie Underwood. And then my cousin yells “obviously they didn’t do any research before creating her sandwich.” They spelt her name “Carry” and her sandwich had meat on it. I was mad because I wanted to get it, but being a vegetarian myself I couldn’t. I was still excited though because it was so random.”

We’ve seen this before.

Natalie Portman‘s lobster salad.

Prince Fielder‘s meaty pizza made in honor of his accomplishments.

But hey, we won’t complain too much.

At least those guys got their names spelled right.

No harsh feelings to Cafe Belles, of course.

We’re just hoping they modify the Carrie sandwich.

Erykah Badu - Atlanta Concert

Celebrities are great for promoting your product.

Eh, as long as they don’t do anything too outrageous, or are caught by TMZ doing the outrageous act.

Celebrities are even better for giving food products the boost, and vegan food is no different.

A recent article at CNN touches on celebrity foodies and opens up with none other than vegan ice cream company Wheeler’s Frozen Ice Cream.

Owner of Wheeler’s, Chef Wheeler del Torro, discusses how shipping his goodies to Erykah Badu got him some exposure.

“Teaming up with someone like [Erykah] is something that is definitely good for outreach to vegans and non-vegans, because she has such mass appeal,” he said.

One of Wheeler’s custom ice creams, a $7,000 champagne flavor made with vintage Dom Perignon and sprinkled gold flakes has become popular among some rappers as well.

Vintage Dom Perignon and gold flakes?

That’s some serious vegan bling.

Wheeler is also the author of a vegan ice cream cookbook, The Vegan Scoop.
