CRO-MAGS frontman John Joseph is set to release another book, Meat Is For Pussies.

“I’ve been a vegetarian/vegan for close to 30 years,” Joseph told Noisecreep.com. “It’s what keeps me healthy enough to play the music I play live, which is very physical music.”

Meat Is For Pussies will be available through punkhouse.org.

Joseph was motivated to write the book after witnessing several friends fall prey to illness. Plus, the lifestyle turned a would be hardened criminal into a mellow, intelligent artist.

“Getting into yoga, vegetarianism and philosophy saved me from a life of crime. I have also lost a lot of people to cancer, so I just feel obligated to spread the knowledge I have gained in the last 29 years.”

Joseph has already released his autobiography, The Evolution of a Cro-Magnon, about his struggles being moved from foster home to foster home and growing up on the streets of New York City.

With a background like that, John Joseph is anything but a pussy.

Meatless Mouthful: Author Discovers Inner World Of Farm Animals

The Inner World Of Farm Animals

The Inner World Of Farm Animals

“I think the complexity of the intelligence of the chickens was the most surprising to me. I was shocked to find out that they can count and use geometric principles, to name just a few of their capacities! I think the most disturbing thing is that, with scientific confirmation of how sentient, capable and aware all these animals are, it becomes even more unbearable to think about what happens to them on a daily basis on a factory farm. On a lighter note, one of the most heartwarming stories in the book is that of Debbie, a cow who fell to the ground because of her crippling arthritis. She was surrounded by 13 of her bovine friends, who mooed until help came. Sadly, Debbie had to be put to sleep. The cows then laid on her grave and mooed and cried. Then they disappeared into the forest for two days, not even coming out for their grains. The book is filled with stories like this, which show the loyalty, personalities, emotions and devotion of these animals.”

Amy Hatkoff, author of The Inner World Of Farm Animals, on the experiences and lessons that are included in her book.

The Kind Diet

“I’ve been thinking about writing this book for 8 years. I kept a big file where I would put all the information I gathered (recipes, tips, etc) and it just kept growing. Over the years, I’ve been able to help friends deal with everything from ovarian cysts, to digestive & stomach issues, to irregular periods. I would send them all a packet of info and they would say to me, “This is a book!” But it wasn’t until a friend gave me the solid nudge I needed that I actually took steps toward getting it published. I finally carved out space in my life to devote to this project and I am so glad I did. I’m really looking forward to being able to share all the knowledge and tools I’ve accumulated over the years — simple and delicious ideas that will allow people to look and feel their best!”

—-Alicia Silverstone, in an interview with Crazysexylife.com, on what inspired her to write the vegan diet and health book, The Kind Diet, set for release next month.

Alicia Silverstone “The Kind Diet” Gives You Superhero Powers

The Kind Diet

Alicia Silverstone‘s vegan diet book, The Kind Diet, is set for release on October 13.

Here’s the cover, featuring the beautifully flawless actress.

Making the vegan transition is a gradual process that Alicia has broken down from “flirting” to “superhero.”

From an editorial description at bn.com:

“Alicia knows that changing life-long dietary habits is a process, and that each person progresses at a different pace. For that reason, The Kind Diet encompasses 3 separate levels, from Flirting to Superhero. Flirts learn to dip a toe into the vegan pool, reducing their meat-eating and swapping out a few key foods for plant-based substitutes to see quickly how even small changes can reap big results. Vegans get to experience the life-altering effects of forgoing animal-products entirely, while still enjoying many convenience foods and meat substitutes in addition to the wonderful grains, vegetables and fruits that form the core of that diet. True enlightenment comes with the Superhero program, based on the principles of macrobiotics and built on a foundation of whole grains, vegetables, and other yummy foods that Alicia describes in detail.”

Sweet!

Can’t wait to get to superhero level cause we’ve always wanted to wear a cape in the kitchen!

Prince Of Asturias Awards 2008

Author Margaret Atwood is touring seven countries to promote her new book The Year of The Flood and to raise money for Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

Working for the birds has made Margaret go partially vegetarian-at least no feathered and furry friends.

Check out this portion of the interview from bloomberg.com.

Anderson: I hear you’ve turned vegetarian for the tour.

Atwood: Yes, I’ve themed myself, though I shouldn’t use the term vegetarian because I’m allowing myself gastropods, crustaceans and the occasional fish. Nothing with fur or feathers, though.

Anderson: And you’re drinking only shade-grown, bird- friendly organic coffee?

Atwood: I’m lugging around some Gorilla Coffee that I got in Brooklyn, and I just got presented tonight with a British kind, from the Monmouth Coffee place in Covent Garden. If you say you’re looking for this stuff, somebody’s going to tell you where it is. Ask and it shall be told unto you.

Anderson: Do you have an eco vice you’d care to confess?

Atwood: We sailed here on the QE2. Going on a boat tour is an eco vice, though we are carbon offsetting it through this company called Zerofootprint. But you could say, “Well, my worst eco vice is breathing.” Every time you do it, you’re letting out carbon dioxide.
