The psychic Octopus who made more friends with fans of Spain’s soccer team than Germany’s this past summer with his prediction of who would win the World Cup, Paul, has passed into the 8-tentacle afterlife.

The manager from the Aquarium Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, Germany, said these kind words about the creature:

“We are consoled by the knowledge that he enjoyed a good life here. We had all naturally grown fond of him and he will be sorely missed. We may decide to give Paul his own small burial plot within our grounds and erect a modest permanent shrine. While this may seem a curious thing to do for a sea creature, Paul achieved such popularity during his short life that it may be deemed the most appropriate course of action.”

Jake Shields may break the rules by being one of the few beginners to get a chance at the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s welterweight title next year. The former Strikeforce Middleweight champion is expected to face off with Martin Kampmann in UFC 121 next week, making it his debut UFC fight. If he wins on October 23rd, he’ll probably face the winner of the Georges St. Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck battle.

He’s still knocking over his competitors without meat, as he explained to USA Today in an interview.

“I feel really healthy and really clean this way,” Shields said.

“I’m not a preachy kind person, but. … if you watch videos of all those slaughterhouses and the way everything’s raised, to me that’s just gross. It’s not something I want to be a part of.”

“I don’t miss any of the foods I ate before becoming vegan. At first I would crave certain things, but as my body became more and more accustomed to getting whole food, plant-based fuel, I stopped wanting to eat unhealthy foods. In fact, something I really appreciate about my diet now is that I don’t have cravings for any specific foods.”

Tony La Russa Supports Prop B In Commercial Ad (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, October 13th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Athletes-Games-Sports, Videos.

Tony La Russa has stepped up to the plate to voice his support for Missouri’s Proposition B, which set standards for pet breeders and is meant to reduce some of the negative consequences of puppy mills.

No stranger to animal activism, vegetarian La Russa started an animal shelter after rescuing a cat in the San Francisco Bay area. He appears in a pro-Prop B commercial that was unveiled today.

“Thousands of dogs are crammed into small and filthy cages for their entire lives at these large scale puppy mills,” La Russa says. “No responsible pet owner would ever treat an animal like that.”

Prop B is endorsed by several animal welfare organizations, which appear in the ad, including La Russa’s own Animal Rescue Foundation, Humane Society of Missouri, Humane Society of the United States, Best Friends Animal Society, ASPCA and the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation.

Herschel Walker, former Heisman Trophy winner who’s decided to pursue a career in Mixed Martial Arts at the age of almost 50. A vegetarian, Walker told CNN he trains for 6-7 hours a day, waking up at 5:30 AM to do 750 to 1,500 push-ups and about 2,000 sit-ups.

We really don’t need as much protein as some meat eaters will try to convince us. Experts recommend about 0.8 grams of protein per 2.2 lbs. of body weight for men and women. And too much protein may put you at risk of disorders of the kidney, liver and/or osteoporosis.

Walker is training for his second MMA fight, which is scheduled to take place December 4th. Watch the video below to hear him discuss his new sport.
