The Inner World Of Farm Animals

The Inner World Of Farm Animals

“I think the complexity of the intelligence of the chickens was the most surprising to me. I was shocked to find out that they can count and use geometric principles, to name just a few of their capacities! I think the most disturbing thing is that, with scientific confirmation of how sentient, capable and aware all these animals are, it becomes even more unbearable to think about what happens to them on a daily basis on a factory farm. On a lighter note, one of the most heartwarming stories in the book is that of Debbie, a cow who fell to the ground because of her crippling arthritis. She was surrounded by 13 of her bovine friends, who mooed until help came. Sadly, Debbie had to be put to sleep. The cows then laid on her grave and mooed and cried. Then they disappeared into the forest for two days, not even coming out for their grains. The book is filled with stories like this, which show the loyalty, personalities, emotions and devotion of these animals.”

The Cove is set for screening in Japan, during the 22nd annual Tokyo International Film Festival from October 18-26.

The film, which portrays the annual dolphin hunt in Taiji, Japan and was originally not okayed for screening (wonder why…), but this year’s theme is Action For Earth 2009, so film officials reversed their decision with the caveat that they are not liable for any disputes arising from the screening.

The hunt for dolphins is not only cruel to animals, but to the market where dolphin meat is sold and consumed.

Dolphin meat contains some of the highest levels of mercury, 5000 more times, than allowed by Japanese law.

That’s more than enough to get you a stay home from work sick pass like Jeremy Piven did.

Since the film’s initial screening and the controversy it sparked, activity in the area where Taiji fisherman captured the dolphins has been relatively quiet.

Will the screening in Japan put even more pressure on the fisherman and buyers to stop this activity for good?

Steve-O, the MTV Jackass star who’s real name is Stephen Glover, is the kind of mentor everyone needed in high school.

He’s joined forces with PETA in an anti-dissecting campaign that advises kids to “Cut Class Not Frogs.”

And who said the jackasses in class never amounted to anything when they grew up.

According to peta.org, “Every year, nearly 6 million animals, including frogs, rats, pigs, and cats” are dissected in classrooms.

Many alternative animal models exist, including frogs and pigs, and science literature indicates that these alternative methods, such as computer software, have been proven either equivalent of superior to the use of live or dead animals to help them understand biology and anatomy.

Chrissie Hynde Brookstone Frog-O-Sphere Bashing

The Pretenders, Cat Power And Juliette Lewis At The Greek Theatre

The Pretenders‘ singer Chrissie Hynde has written a letter to Interim CEO and president of Brookstone for its Frog-O-Sphere display, where live frogs and snails are sold in the store.

“I was horrified to learn from my friends at PETA that Brookstone is selling African dwarf frogs and snails in tiny, barren boxes. Customers have reported that the animals are languishing on store shelves and that they often die slow, miserable deaths. Foot massagers and grill equipment can live quite happily in boxes; animals cannot. Brookstone should rely on sales of innovative and cruelty-free gadgets instead of profiting from animal suffering.”

“Over the years, I’ve opened my home to many animal companions—but only after careful consideration of my ability to provide them with the love and care that they need for their entire lives. It’s irresponsible, and often deadly, to purchase animals on a whim. When the novelty wears off, the animals pay the price. Most mall shoppers have no idea of the commitment required to take care of these animals…”

With a name like Cattle Decapitation, you’d think impaling pig heads on stage was more their type of publicity stunt.

But the band is actually outspoken about mistreatment of animals and the environment, and were quite shocked (and not for good reasons) when the band Burning of Rome used impaled pig heads as their stage prop at the 2009 San Diego Music Awards.

Travis Ryan, lead singer with Cattle Decapitation had this to say:

“It’s kind of cheesy. So many bands have done that. It didn’t seem to mesh with what they were doing onstage. After their set, they pulled the heads off of the mike stands and showed them to everybody in the crowd as if to say, ‘Hey, look at me.’ ”

“Pigs are smarter than dogs. I find it deplorable to do anything to support the meat industry. This was so silly. [Pig heads onstage] has been done before.”

No kidding, Travis. Ozzy Osbourne nightmares flashbacks anyone?

Kerry Katona Got No Puppy Dog Love From Us

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, September 28th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Reality TV.

Kery Katona and Mark Croft leaving home with their small puppy

Really, some people should be required to take puppy parenting classes when adopting.

British reality star Kerry Katona took her brown puppy dog back to the shop because she reportedly didn’t like the color of its fur, according to Now magazine.

Katona traded it for a black and white version of the same breed.

But wait, Katona’s had puppy commitments in the past.

During her MTV reality TV show What’s the Problem, Kerry also evicted her bulldog because it relieved itself on the floor.

Dogs require patience, persistence, and most importantly research prior to getting one to determine if its personality will click with your lifestyle.

Don’t get us started on that chihuahua fad that most likely sent hundred of dogs back to the shelter or worse, kennel, when unsuspecting owners weren’t as thrilled when their dog didn’t appear as cute because it never asked for Mexican in Spanish.
