Vegetarian Star

Pamela Anderson will be the guest of honor at Animal Rights Foundation of Florida’s 20th Anniversary Gala on March 14 at the Broward County Convention Center in Miami, Florida.

Hopefully, she’ll be wearing more clothes than this that night.

The event will be hosted by vegetarian and animal lover Bob Barker and guests such as famous vegan Dr. Neal Barnard and Ingrid Newkirk will be able to chow down on delicious vegan grub.

The Animal Rights Foundation of Florida (ARFF) is celebrating 20 years looking out for Florida’s non human critters through education and appearances throughout the community.

Although everybody will come for the food (or in hopes Pamela Anderson will show up half naked), besides that, there will be silent and live auctions for items such as an autographed poster of Kim Basinger’s L.A. Confidential poster.

Tickets are $250 per person and all proceeds from the gala go to the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida.

“I was saddened to hear about the incident involving the chimpanzee, Travis, and my heart goes out to the woman who is now lying in a hospital bed as a result of this horrific attack.”

“Recently, I narrated a video for PETA about the abuse that chimpanzees and other great apes endure when they are ripped away from their mothers when only days old to be used in commercials (as Travis was) and movies. Although I was sick when I heard about this most recent incident, I wasn’t surprised.”

“I sincerely hope that this tragedy will make people realize that great apes should never be kept as pets or exploited for films, television, or advertising. Their lives are miserable from the day that they are taken from their mothers: They endure abusive training—usually beatings—until they are cast off to roadside zoos or meet a violent end, as Travis did in this tragic case.”

“I did not like the non-veg food here so I preferred to go in for vegetarian food. We were told that one can get Indian food if ordered. But it was time consuming and I managed with the available veg items for breakfast and meals.”
—Tanvi Lonkar (pictured left), who played the teenage lead role of ‘Slumdog’ lead actress Latika, on the food available for her to eat while in the US. Lonkar cited food as one of the adjustments she had to make in the United States.

Lonkar should also have no problem getting good veg food back home, if she chooses. After visiting the actress’ native country, India, the director of Slumdog Millionaire, Danny Boyle,  described it as “Vegetarian Nation.“

Good to know she’s wearing Stella McCartney’s cruelty-free clothing as well. Besides Real Food Daily, she has been known to pick up veg grub at Vegan Glory.

Natalie Portman attended the Oscars ceremony looking ethical both inside and out.

The vegan actress wore a baby pink strapless dress, vegan shoes, and “ethical diamonds.”

Ethical or non-conflict diamonds, unlike “blood diamonds” aren’t mined in war zones where the profits go to fund violent activities against people during civil wars in Africa.

Although various certification programs exist to ensure diamonds are conflict-free, they aren’t foolproof and some have suggested that as much as 100 million US dollars worth of diamonds are traded illegally for arms each year.

Some companies, like Brilliant Earth, provide diamonds mined in conflict-free areas, such as Canada.

Olivia Wilde, star of Fox’s TV series House, made an appearance recently on the Ellen DeGeneres show and announced she’s a full vegan!

We had teased Olivia in the past for being “mostly vegetarian” but still eating fish.

She first met Ellen at a fundraiser for Prop 2, a California measure which passed last year to ensure certain farm animals can move freely.

She discussed how Moby was performing at the Prop 2 fundraiser when a huge spider came aiming for Moby’s bald head. 

Of course, in the interest of animals, the spider wasn’t killed-it was picked up by Jared Leto who announced at the microphone, “We’re here for the animals. That means every animal.”

Wilde’s husband is Italian, who’s father was a prince, so that technically makes her a princess! Or according to Ellen, a “pancake princess.”

Olivia’s never lost an eating contest and tells the story of how she ate 33 pancakes in 20 minutes.

She challenges Ellen to a future vegan eating contest, but Ellen suggests Portia could be a better competitor.

Uh-oh. Ellen’s revealed a behind closed doors secret!

Brigitte Bardot, longtime vegetarian and animal activist and actress, is asking for U.S. President Barack Obama’s help in preventing the death of seals every season during Canada’s annual seal hunt.

Bardot said she has “immense hope” in Obama, “even if I know that he is in demand from all directions and he already has a lot to do in his own country.”

The timing of her letter writing coincided with Obama’s recent visit to Canada.

Several other celebrities have spoken in opposition to the hunt, such as Canadian natives Pamela Anderson and Bryan Adams, and most recently Nigel Barker documenting the lives of the animals before they are clubbed, in his film, A Sealed Fate.

Last year, the quota for clubbed seals was 275,000. After being killed, the seals are skinned for their pelts, which are later sold. 

The United States has banned all Canadian seal products since 1972 and the European Union is considering a similar ban.
