Alicia Silverstone - 'The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide To Feeling Great, Losing Weight and Saving The Plant' Signing

Alicia Silverstone is as into yoga as she’s into seitan.

In a recent article on the HuffingtonPost.com, Alicia reveals her favorite style to strike a meditative pose.

“I really like, I think it’s called Anusara. Why I love it is, I feel really safe. It’s really practical. I love my specific teacher, too. You’re focused on strength and growth. The whole time you’re there, they say, “make sure you know about your pinky toe pressing into the ground and pull up.” And they do a whole class on pulling up into your hamstring muscles, and you’re thinking you know what those are, but until you do the class you have no idea what they are. They really get you to learn about every little part of your body.”

Every Anusara class begins with an invocation for “devotional recognition of the grace-bestowing power of universal Spirit within and around.”

Classes also have themes and there are over 250 poses that compile the syllabii of Anusara yoga asanas, covering all the key ansanas within the major classification of poses including standing poses, backbends, forward bends, twists, hand-balancings, inversions, and restoratives.

The Kind Diet

All this week, we’re hosting a giveaway and three of our lucky readers will receive a free copy of Alicia Silverstone’s new vegan diet and lifestyle book, The Kind Diet.

Every day until the end of the contest, we’re bringing you a few of Alicia’s thoughts on The Kind Diet, with a reminder to leave a comment to enter to win.

Today Alicia gives advice for those that think they’ll “slip” here and there because they’re addicted to hamburgers.

“Look, my own journey also included a time when I was an on-again- off again vegetarian, so I understand that these things don’t happen overnight. I believe that the most important thing you can offer someone is information that will allow them to get to where they need to be. In The Kind Diet, there are different entry points, so if you want to flirt with a healthier lifestyle you can do so without pressure–simply by taking in some new information and opening yourself up to better, more nutritious, and yummier food. See how that feels and go from there. For someone else, the right place to start may be a more challenging, full-on life-changing entry point. Regardless, every step in this direction can ultimately have a huge impact on your health and that of our planet. It’s important for people to know that anyone can do this. And if you fall off, get back on. Nobody’s perfect.”

And it all adds up. If everyone ate vegetarian for one day, we’d save 1.5 billion pounds of crops otherwise fed to livestock, enough to feed the state of New Mexico for more than a year, according to planetsave.com.

Enter to win The Kind Diet today.

Meatless Mouthful: Persia White Thanksgiving Meaning

Discovery Channel's Animal Planet Show "Whale Wars" Event

“Thanksgiving is a time to reflect and express our gratitude for all that we have to be thankful for. In the true spirit of this holiday, take a moment to think about the importance of all life. By choosing a vegetarian diet, every one of us can take part in ending the cruelty animals endure on factory farms. Like cats and dogs, turkeys are intelligent, social, and sensitive beings who want to live. Give thanks this holiday and save a life.”

Gwyneth Paltrow, Alicia Silverstone Hot And Green

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 in Actresses, Environment-Eco-Green.

Stella McCartney - Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010

Does being hot automatically qualify you for being green?

Grist.org asks this question as it reminds us sexy actresses are putting up www’s all over the place.

Sure, they have the looks, but is there substance behind Goop.com?

Here’s how Grist rates Gwyneth Paltrow‘s website:

Gwyneth Paltrow, goop.com
Motto: “Nourish the inner aspect”
Mood: Spare and elegant, bordering on insufferable
Worth a damn?: Sure as Margo Tenenbaum smokes

“Much has been made of this vanity website, in which Paltrow introduces marvelous, wonderful things into the lives of mere mortals. How you feel about it depends largely on how you feel about her, but we give props for the fact that it weaves in sustainability—almost naturally. Vegan recipes and recyclable socks nestle alongside accounts of taking weekend jaunts to London and getting fashion advice from Vanity Fair—you know, the stuff we all do when no one’s looking.”

Gwyneth’s a hit and miss for vegetarian discussion on Goop, but when she hits the target…ooh la la, Vegeanise vegan mayo, seitan…need we say more?

“Mallika Sherawat is by far the baddest of all of the Bollywood women. She’s also hailed at Bollywood’s twitter queen. In an exclusive interview w/ the Examiner she reveals a few makeup and diet tips & more saying “I go all organic vegetarian, lot of fruits and water! I workout daily, the usual “star” stuff:) I get plenty of sleep, I think that helps, too. And I never go outside without my parasol to lessen the sun rays to the skin. Yes, my friends make fun of me but I know it works, and what works on camera works for me:)”

Mallika even goes so far as to shun dairy, getting her calcium from almond, cashew and soy milk.

“I have been strictly vegetarian ever since I can remember,” she said. “I am against the concept of killing an animal to eat it.”

Brothers and Sisters star Sarah Jane Morris tries to live a green life, but admits there’s one eco sin she can’t stop committing.

“My biggest eco-sin is probably the fact that I’m not a vegetarian,” Morris said, according to celebrity-babies.com.

“We do try to have “Meatless Monday” where my husband and I eat vegetarian all day, but since I’ve been pregnant, I’m ashamed to say, that rule has sort of gone out the window!”

“I know that raising livestock is one of the worst things for our environment, but I think the problem isn’t that we eat meat, it’s that we eat so much.”

“A steak used to be considered a luxury, something you had for special occasions, now, in America especially, you can get meat for so cheap that people almost expect it at every meal.”

“We don’t need to eat that much meat, and in fact we’d all be healthier if we didn’t.”

“That being said, I love bacon and filets, and all that good stuff, I just try to think of it as a luxury more than a necessity.”

At least Sarah’s honest, not pretending that all the Priuses she could own and recycling in the world isn’t nearly as beneficial on the earth compared to switching to a plant based diet.

Sarah is expecting a baby boy in January.
