'A View from the Bridge' opening night New York City

Scarlett Johansson is giving Michelle Obama backup by urging lawmakers to adopt changes to school lunch menus to include healthier items like fruits and vegetables.

Mrs. Obama has been busy promoting her anti-obesity campaign, and there is legislation in the works asking schools to use more plant based meals with less milk and less fat.

“I am so thankful that the National Lunch Program exists and helps children around the nation get enough to eat. But right now, many of the foods served through this program do not support children’s healthy development. Many students who eat school lunches consume too much saturated fat and cholesterol and not enough fruits and vegetables. Childhood obesity is striking young children like never before, and being overweight puts kids at risk for type 2 diabetes and other chronic diabetes.”

Ecorazzi reports that a press release states Scarlett grew up with little means, and knows firsthand how difficult it can be for children who might get their only decent meal from a school cafeteria.

You can read Scarlett’s entire letter as well as key provisions to the act here.

Sarah Silverman–Marriage Like Meat, Gross And Crazy

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, March 16th, 2010 in Actresses, Comedians, Food & Drink.

Alliance For Children's Rights Right To Laugh Fundraiser

Hilarious comedian Sarah Silverman has a new man in her life, Alec Sulkin, who she became involved with after stalking, or, uh,  following him on Twitter.

“I wrote him a note that said, ‘You’re funny,’ ” she said, according to People. “When we finally met, he came over to my place, walked in the door, put out his hand and said, ‘Hi, I’m Alec.’ We’ve spent every day together since.”

Although she has nothing but kind words to say about the relationship, Silverman warns never to mention the “M” word to her.

“It’s just not for me,” she says about marriage. “I’m a vegetarian, but I don’t have a problem if you want a hamburger. Marriage, to me, is like eating meat. I think it’s gross and f***ing crazy. It’s this superbarbaric, old-timey tradition that no one remembers we don’t have to do anymore.”

Does marriage also come with increasing your risk of gaining weight in the abdomen, high blood pressure, clogged arteries and havoc on the environment?

Sounds like Silverman is pretty open to other lifestyles, as long as no one’s imposing one on her.

The next time you invite Silverman to a party, you can bring your married couples. But don’t forget your civil unions, LTRs and soley egg/sperm donor partnerships.

Ever since partnering with Veggie Central, a program designed to teach parents how to incorporate vegetables into their children’s diets, Jennie Garth has been sharing tips for sneaking in those greens, oranges, reds and every vegetable color imaginable onto the plate.

One of Garth’s latest tips she shares with Fox is about getting the entire family to eat better.

“Participation leads to anticipation, so have children help in the kitchen as a way to spend time as a family as well as have them involved and interested in what they will eat.”

What are you waiting for?

Start the veggie chopping assembly line going with your kids today.

It might be a good idea to save the cutting for the “bigger” kids while having the younger ones wash and shred.

Eva Longoria Shares Guacamole Recipe

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, March 16th, 2010 in Actresses, Food & Drink, Recipes.

The Noble Gift Gala - Arrivals

Eva Longoria has shared a recipe for guacamole with Energy Times that includes all the basic ingredients of the rich, green whip, along with some tips from Longoria on what NOT to put in your guac.

“There are a lot of things that people put in guac that really do not belong there,” Longoria said. “Garlic does not belong in guac; mayonnaise does not belong in guac.”

Guess technically, Eva’s favorite soy butter doesn’t belong in there either, but who knows?

Longoria prefers Serrano peppers over jalapenos and says save the lime juice for dishes like pico de gallo or salsa picante.

Whip together the following ingredients for your next Desperate Housewives television night.

8 large ripe avocados
2 large tomatoes (diced)
1 large yellow onion (diced)
1 half-bunch cilantro (chopped)
3 small Serrano peppers
salt and lemon to taste

Eva Longoria Soy Butter Substitution

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, March 15th, 2010 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

The Noble Gift Gala - Arrivals

Eva Longoria loves to cook for both herself and hubby Tony Parker and when it comes to finding substitutions for traditional ingredients used in either Mexican or French cuisine, Longoria is never out of options.

“There’s always a healthier way to present food without compromising the taste,” Longoria said, according to Energy Times.

Although some of her favorite recipes might look unhealthy at first, a few tweaks here and there can cut harmful things like saturated fat and cholesterol, while maintaining taste.

“There are a lot of oils and lard and butters, and there’s so much that you can substitute that with.”

Longoria uses soy butter in the kitchen and also prefers heart healthy olive oil.

She once spent two years as a full time vegetarian to “cleanse her system.”

Knowing how good soy butter taste on vegetables, bread or any other item that calls for real butter, you’d think it’d make her go back.

“Friday Night Light’s” Aimee Teegarden Heading Towards Vegan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, March 13th, 2010 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

NBC TCA July 09 Party

Aimee Teegarden calls herself a vegetarian “heading towards vegan.”

Although Mother Nature Network didn’t give more details about Teegarden’s vegan journey (is there a set date, ingredients to eliminate at certain steps?), one could make the assumption that the Friday Night Lights actress is making small changes in her life so she can one day live comfortably and healthy as a vegan versus making drastic changes like focusing on eliminating products instead of adding new ones.

Or maybe she’s having second thoughts about what goes on in the dairy industry, but still hasn’t found the right cheese substitute to satisfy those insane moo cravings.

If you’re an “almost vegan,” what non-vegan products are you hoping to give up?
