2010 Winter TCA Tour - Day 5

Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest have written an open letter to Gary Conklin and workers at the Conklin Dairy Farm in Ohio where an undercover investigation by animal rights group Mercy For Animals revealed severe abuse to dairy cows that included body slamming, repeatedly punching them in the face, stomping on their heads, pulling them by their ears and giving as many as 40 blows to the head.

A graphic video of the ordeal can be seen after the break in this post.

“Our daughter came to us last night urging us to watch the video of the abuse at your plant. She was overcome with grief that human beings could inflict such cruelty and unconscious hatred at the most benign of creatures and their infants. The shocking images were too much for her father and me but we watched enough to know where it led.”

“What will you do?”

Leona Lewis Chooses Antonio Berardi For Ethical Costumes On Tour

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, May 27th, 2010 in Fashion, Female Singers.

British singer Leona Lewis performs at the Rock in Rio Music Festival in Lisbon

Leona Lewis has commissioned designer Antonio Berardi to design her costumes for her recent tour.

According to Contact Music, the vegetarian singer spent $262,500 (£175,000) of her own money to ensure the clothing was as ethical as possible.

A source told Britain’s The Sun, “Leona has been very forceful with Antonio. She has insisted the outfits are as ethically sound as they can possibly be. She’s paid for all the clothes out of her own pocket, so she has been quite hands-on in terms of design.”

It’s easier than ever to find designers who specialize in ethical clothing, and you probably won’t have to spend as much as Leona on brands such as those featured in the 5 Affordable Eco Designers That Celebrities Love.

The Humane Society has provided a list of major retailers and their positions on selling fur, such as if fur is not sold or if there are plans to phase furs out by a certain year.

The HSUS list contains information by company, it’s policy on fur, method of verifying the fur status and brands sold under the company affected.

NFL: Super Bowl XLIV-Super Bowl Breakfast

Has Michael Vick been elevated to sainthood?

The NFL player convicted for his involvement in dog fighting activities is scheduled to host a celebrity party at the MI-VI Club at Gulfstream Park Racing & Casino in Hallandale Beach in Florida where his guests will be met by protesters, according to an article in Palm Beach Post.

But representatives from the Humane Society of the United States say Vick’s work with the organization has actually steered youth from following down his path.

“He has been effective in helping young men choose a better path,” said John Goodwin, the Humane Society’s manager of animal fighting issues. “He is the example of how dogfighting is a destructive, dead-end activity with enormous consequences.”

My Dog: An Unconditional Love Story

My Dog: An Unconditional Love Story

My Dog: An Unconditional Love Story is a DVD documentary exploring the relationship between people and their pets.

My Dog features several celebrities and their pet stories, including Glenn Close, Edie Falco and vegetarian singer-songwriter Nellie McKay.

McKay’s story was somewhat bittersweet, as one of her dogs, Charo, died a few months after filming was complete.

Twenty percent of the profits from DVD sales go towards an animal charity of the celebrity’s choice, and McKay chose Animals Without Borders, an organization that rescues animals in other countries and brings them to the United States for adoption.

@BPGlobalPR

@BPGlobalPR

A mock BP Twitter account has been created, poking fun at the company’s PR attempts after the Gulf Coast oil spill incident.

@BPGlobalPR has over 65,000 followers and Tweets several times a day with humorous, snide remarks like the following:

“Btw, does anyone have Criss Angel’s email? I bet he can make this oil disappear! #bpbelievesinmagic #bpcares”

“A bird just stole my sandwich! You deserve everything you get, nature!!! #bpcares”

“Of course, bp cares about the fishing industry as well. Now, all tuna from the gulf coast comes pre-packaged in oil. #you’rewelcome #yum”

The updates serve as a nice laugh to distract from the catastrophe of the incident

The real toll on wildlife, however, is no laughing matter.

It’s estimated that over 300 birds have been killed so far due to the spill and the deaths of six dolphins found in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama since the beginning of the month are being treated as oil spill related casualties.

Sweet & Sara Founder Sara Sohn Interview With VegNews

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, May 27th, 2010 in Business, Food & Drink.

Sweet and Sara

Sweet and Sara

Five years ago, Sara Sohn launched a vegan treat company specializing in using vegan marshmallows in s’more-like desserts.

Sweet & Sara products have gained national attention and have been featured in the Food Network magazine and by Rachael Ray.

An inspiration to vegetarian and vegan entrepreneurs, Sohn recently spoke with VegNews about her idea to start the business, which is truly a family affair.

VN: Your family is very important to you and your company. How are they involved?

SS: You mean besides being loyal taste testers? My parents are the most hardworking, supportive people in the world. Mom’s super tiny but she’s got super strength. She does everything from putting sticker labels on all the products, to helping out in the kitchen, to running up and down four flights to get the mail, to feeding our staff. Dad is the handyman and fixes everything and anything in the factory, and believe me, there’s never a day where something does not need repair. My sister makes sure all the orders get packed efficiently and is the peacemaker when my parents and I squabble about who forgot to water the plants. She is also the genius behind our brand name.

Giorgio Armani Honors Martin Scorsese & Leonardo DiCaprio in Shutter Island

Isabella Rossellini took Sundance Channel viewers into the sex lives of spiders, ducks and anchovies with her Green Porno and Seduce Me series.

Rossellini’s shows are designed to entertain and educate, as such was the case with an episode touching on sustainable fish and the problems of overfishing.

Rossellini shares in an interview with Treehugger:

“To myself I called them Green Porno with a Conscience. This was the series called Bon Appetit, and they all start with me preparing delicious risotto with shrimp, or eating fried calamari or eating anchovies on my pizza. And then they stop and there’s a vignette on how they’re made and how they are fished, how actually they are over-fished so that we are depleting our ocean.”
