Gandhi, Pythagoras And Other Great Vegetarians In History

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, October 8th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Misc Artists and Performers.

Young Gandhi

Treehugger has compiled a slideshow of some of the greatest vegetarians in history.

Gandhi’s birthday was celebrated earlier this month, and from his views on non-violence and the treatment of animals, it’s no surprise he made the list.

“Including Mohandas Gandhi in a group of vegetarians seems almost too obvious. Even so, such a list would not be complete without mentioning the famous advocate of non-violence. Gandhi wrote extensively about vegetarianism and once said that “I do feel that spiritual progress does demand at some stage that we should cease to kill our fellow creatures for the satisfaction of our bodily wants.”

“October 2 is Gandhi’s birthday’s which is an excellent reason to eliminate meat from your diet, or at least skip it for the day. Whether you are motivated by a respect for the man, your compassion for animals, or, as many environmentalists are, a concern over the resource intensive nature the livestock industry, you will make a powerful statement and make one step towards being “the change you wish to see in the world.”

But there are several others in history you might not have known were vegs.

Pythagoras didn’t just invent those triangle theories to damn you in Geometry. The animal rights activist in Greece believed that “animals share with us the privilege of having a soul” and “for as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.”

Damien Hirst Gives Up Dead Animals For Paintbrush

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, October 8th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Misc Artists and Performers.

The Serpentine Gallery Summer Party

Damien Hirst, the artist famous for featuring art that consisted of dead animals preserved in formaldehyde has announced he’s no longer as morbid and will start painting instead.

Apparently, dear old Damien used to be embarrassed by his paintings, so he hid behind 20 feet tall chemically preserved mammals-some of which were dissected- instead.

Compensation works so strangely.

“It felt awful for two years,” Damien said. “The paintings were embarrassing and I didn’t want anyone to come in.

“I thought if I die now, people are going to find these paintings and it’s going to be horrible.”

He still thinks his paintings won’t be received well by critics, but at least he’ll shock average people and that’s a good thing.

“People are not shocked by animals in formaldehyde any more, but they’re shocked that you’re picking up a brush and a canvas and going backwards.”

7th Annual Teen Vogue Young Hollywood Party

Christian Serratos appreciates it when a traditional fast food giant remembers to put a little veg love on the menu.

On a recent Tweet, Christian wrote:

“Thank you Burger King for having veggie burgers. Yummmmmyyy”

The next time you’re in an otherwise meat-laden, grease fest food establishment and you’re able to consume something from the menu, follow Christian’s lead.

Because if they never know we want it, we’ll never get it!

Alicia Silverstone Vegan Peanut Butter Cups At NYC Wine And Food?

The Kind Diet

Alicia Silverstone will have her own session at the New York City Wine and Food Festival this weekend and she’ll be demonstrating cooking vegan recipes from her upcoming vegan diet book, The Kind Diet.

If baketivism is the way to people’s hearts, then Alicia should bring along some of the desserts from her cookbook, like the ones she described for expressnightout.com.

“The peanut butter cups and chocolate fudge brownies are insane,” Silverstone said. “Vegan food doesn’t have to compromise on taste. I challenge cheese to a duel! I think any of my amazing dishes are better than a cheese plate any day.”

Alicia’s is offering her guarantee.

“Even just replacing your butter with Earth Balance spread or mayonnaise with Vegenaise will make a difference. I promise they taste exactly the same. Mail it to me if you don’t think so! OK, don’t really mail it to me, but it’s just as good, and so much better for you.”

Hilary Swank Cries Over Meat Diet

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, October 8th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink, Not So Vegetarian.

Triumph Inspiration Awards '09 - Milan Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010

Hilary Swank is feeling a bit guilty because she feel she has to eat meat to stay healthy.

The actress abandoned her vegetarian diet a few years ago because she was losing weight.

She told Marie Claire magazine, “I just started withering away. I wasn’t getting enough vitamins or protein. (It was) very emotional.”

“I sat over my plate and cried. I really had to work through it. It still makes me emotional. I don’t know if you have ever looked into a cow’s eye, but it is so soulful. So I don’t like it – but it’s something I have to do.”

Boo hoo. (Just kidding, we really are sympathetic. A little.)

However, with a bank account like Hilary’s this Million Dollar Baby actress should have no problem investing in some one on one diet counseling and expertise and even hire her own personal chef to ensure she gets the high protein plant based nutrition she needs.

Beans, tofu, faux meats, whole grain pastas, even veg powder protein supplements…the list is endless.

Not to mention the successful triathletes that sustain themselves on not only a vegetarian, but vegan diet.

Hilary’s wasting away was probably due to the fact she wasn’t eating enough food-not eating vegetarian food.

Maybe some cow will look her in the eye-and then curse at her so she’ll wake up and realize there are other options.

Godfather Italian Organic Vodka April 2009: Will It Be Vegan?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, October 8th, 2009 in Business, Food & Drink.

The Godfather

The Godfather

Since there aren’t enough alcoholic beverages on the shelves already, Paramount Licensing Inc. and Iconic Brands Inc. have gotten together to launch a brand of Vodka, The Godfather Italian Organic Vodka, in April 2009.

From businesswire.com:

“We are extremely excited about our alliance with Paramount Licensing,” said Richard DeCicco, chief executive officer of Iconic. “THE GODFATHER brand will add a twist of fun and entertainment to the spirits industry, and we believe it will surely become a fan favorite in the adult lifestyle category.”

Sounds fun and exciting, but there are many questions to be answered, such as those by digitalcity.com, where the writer is interested in both the ingredients and whether or not we’ll be expected to fork over extra if The Godfather Vodka will be imported.

One question that keeps popping up in our minds is whether or not The Godfather Vodka will be veg friendly.

In fact, we’ve asked this so many times, it’s starting to sound like a David Letterman Will It Float? segment.

(singing: Will it be vegan? Will it be vegan? Will it be vegan? Will it be vegan?)

Cause everything that gets your tipsy isn’t, you know.

Some contain dairy products and forbid our vegan drunken sisters from partaking.

Other are refined with fish products that make them unacceptable for even our vegetarian brothers to take to keg parties.

Since the vodka is still in the development phase, might it help to write to either Paramount or Iconic and ask they keep The Godfather veg friendly so everybody can get drunk?

It would be an offer we can’t refuse.
