If you’re in Venice, California, there’s still time to head over to the 2009 Abbot Kinney Festival, which is described by festival officials as a fun event for, “adults who are environmentally conscious, focused on health, love animals, enjoy bicycling, family-oriented, unpretentiously hip, and arts-minded.”

Health focused and environmentally conscious include eating more plant based foods and Compassion Over Killing is on hand passing out pro-vegetarian pamphlets to all those unpretentiously hip festival goers.

So head over and say hi to the folks at COK and enjoy the featured exhibitors, including the Whole Foods Green Scene, featuring Clif Bar and Tom’s Shoes.

The festival will be ongoing until 6PM, Pacific time.

William Safire Agreed With Donald Watson Vegan Pronunciation

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, September 27th, 2009 in Authors, Food & Drink.

Meet The Press

William Safire, New York Times and presidential speech writer, has died at the age of 79.

Safire once devoted a column in the New York Times on vegetarianism and veganism, citing woodworker and originator of the word “vegan” Donald Watson.

Safire himself, took the time to elaborate on the pronunciation of the word “vegan.”

“My problem with vegan, now affirmatively used as self-description by roughly two million Americans, is its pronunciation. Does the first syllable sound like the vedge in vegetable, with the soft g? Or is it pronounced like the name sci-fi writers have given the blue-skinned aliens from far-off Vega: VEE-gans or VAY-gans?”

“For this we turn to the word’s coiner: ”The pronunciation is VEE-gan,” Watson told Vegetarians in Paradise, a Los Angeles-based Web site, last year, ”not vay-gan, veggan or veejan.” He chooses the ee sound followed by a hard g. That’s decisive but not definitive; some lexicographers differ, and pronunciation will ultimately be determined by the majority of users.”

“I’ll go along with the coiner’s pronunciation of VEE-gan. He’s a charmingly crotchety geezer who began as a vegetarian. ”When my older brother and younger sister joined me as vegetarians, nonsmokers, teetotalers and conscientious objectors,” Watson says, ”my mother said she felt like a hen that had hatched a clutch of duck eggs.” He obviously inherited her feel for language. I’m a carnivore myself — an animal that delights in eating other animals — but won’t treat this guy like a fad-diet freak: Watson has a major coinage under his belt, and he’s a spry 94.”

Always nice to see a non veg appreciate someone who follows the lifestyle.

Our thoughts are with Safire’s friends and family.

Holly Madison, Carrot Top Fur Ice King, Queen At Minus 5 Ice Bar

Holly Madison and Carrot Top crowned Ice Queen and King at Minus 5 one Year anniversary celebration

Uh-oh.

Holly Madison has said in the past she always fakes it.

So we’re really hoping she was faking it with Carrot Top (who every woman probably has to fake it with-haha, just kidding, love you Carrot Top) when she wore this fur coat at the Minus 5 Ice Bar at the Mandaly Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Holly and Carrot Top were crowned Ice Queen and King.

When Holly was approached to do an anti-fur PSA, she had said:

“I’m not a hardcore PETA person. When they approached me to do the ad, I made it clear to them that I’m not a vegetarian, and I’ve got leather seats in my car. I said I would support that ad campaign, but I wasn’t their model citizen, and they were fine with that.”

Maybe Holly’s not a hardcore anti-fur person either.

Take a look and tell us what you think.

Is Holly faking it?

Michael Jackson Honored By Hindus For Vegetarianism

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, September 27th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Male Singers.

Michael Jackson

So, aside from those chicken eating allegations by Magic Johnson, Michael Jackson tried to live a vegetarian lifestyle.

He’s being honored for this, and several other lifestyle choices by his Hindu fans.

“According to reports, he was reading India’s first Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s poems during the last days of his life and he collaborated with Oscar winner A. R. Rahman,” said Hindu statesman Rajad Zed. “He reportedly learned how to meditate and was vegetarian.”

Michael’s Hindu fans dedicated a pind-daan ritual to him at the holy city of Bodh Gaya as part of last week’s pitrapaksh festivities.

The ceremony was conducted at the Vishnupad Temple on the banks of the Falgu River in Bihar, and led by a priest, who is a devotee of Michael.

Zed added, “Several celebrities have offered prayers here in the past for the salvation of their ancestors, including the Bollywood superstar Shatrughan Sinha.”

“Hindus believe that pind-daan, performed during the fortnight long pitrapaksh period, brings relief to departed souls. Around one million people from all over the world congregate in Bodh Gaya for pind-daan annually. After taking bath in a nearby kund (reservoir), the pilgrims perform pind-daan, involving religious rites for the peace of souls of one’s parents and ancestors.”

Looks like fans all over the world are still celebrating, grieving, and remembering one of the greatest pop stars ever.

They say never shop hungry. Or is that just in the case of groceries?

Oh, well. We think the phrase should be “always eat veg before shopping.”

Carrie’s latest single Cowboy Casanova was just released and will be featured on her upcoming album, Play On.

Recording Academy Hosts GRAMMY Salute to Country Music Honoring Vince Gill

Country music handsome chap Brad Paisley likes vegan food!

Although he still has his share of chicken tikka masala and fried lamb fritters at the Indian buffets, Brad’s developed a taste for Real Food Daily, thanks to his wife, actress Kimberly Williams, who’s had roles in According to Jim and We Are Marshall.

Brad told latimes.com:

“Another place we love to hit is Real Food Daily in Santa Monica. I would never have walked into a vegetarian restaurant before I met my wife. I was raised in West Virginia, and a well-balanced meal meant French fries and a hamburger. But now I’ll order a portabello mushroom burger on a nine-grain bun and it’s an awesome sandwich.”

Awesome!

Any time spent at vegan restaurants in Time Well Wasted, Brad.
