Keenen Ivory Wayans Likes Mom’s Red Beans And Rice

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 10th, 2008 in Actors, Food & Drink, Videos.

Keenen Ivory Wayans made us laugh in movies like White Chicks and the T.V. series In Living Color. Some of his favorite vegetarian meals include hearty vegetable soup, pasta primavera, and his mom’s red beans and rice. You gotta love a man who lists his mom’s cooking as the best, right? Watch this video to hear him give mom’s dish the kudos and promote the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine, an organization of doctors practicing what they preach-eating vegan and advocating it for the rest of us.

Rogan For Target Debuts At Barneys New York

As an adolescent, how did you rebel? Break curfew? Dress trampy and date the bad boy? How about eat meat behind mom and dad’s back? Aisha Tyler of Fox’s 24 and Ross’ girlfriend, Charlie, in Friends,  was a very, very bad girl. In an interview with Britain’s Night and Day magazine:

“I love food. I’m not someone who has ever been able to survive on lettuce leaves. My parents were vegetarians and I went to school with sandwiches with tofu and greens. None of the other kids wanted to trade their lunches with me. It forced me to be funny and make friends. I had to assimilate with the other youngsters even though I felt like an outsider. When other kids were rebelling by smoking and drinking, I was going out and sneaking meat on the side. It sounds crazy but my idea of rebellion was to buy a turkey dinner and eat it without mum and dad knowing.”

Bad Aisha. Bad, bad, bad. That’s an act punishable of at least a year’s worth of grounding. And who said anything about surviving on lettuce leaves? Didn’t Tyler’s parents know about Morningstar Farms?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 in Male Musicians, Male Singers, Videos.

AFI and Blaqk Audio frontman Davey Havok has put his pretty face on video to let you know he thinks humans were not meant to consume animals. There’s even a little bit of fashionista in him–he’s making shirts that portray the same message for his new clothing line Zu Boutique. Looks like he’s wearing one with a dancing (soy?) hotdog on it. Go here to register to win a free T-shirt before September 24th and watch his PSA video below.

“As human beings, we are not meant to consume animals; we are not meant to consume animal products. … I’ve begun making shirts … to remind you–to remind everyone–that it is, in fact, murder.”

Brooke Shields: Vegetarian Gone Bad?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 in Actresses, Models, Not So Vegetarian.

The NBC Universal Experience

Brooke Shields is gracing the cover of Shape Magazine for October. Supposedly, she has 5 tips for staying healthy, fit, and happy. However, she made a comment that although she used to be a vegetarian, she eats meat now and it’s what her body thinks is right.

“I was a vegetarian for 15 years until I got pregnant. I just needed to eat meat. I believe you really have to listen to your body.”

We wonder what our favorite vegetarian models like Christie Brinkley would think of that comment. Better yet, we wonder what you guys think of that comment. Do you believe her body was telling her to eat meat? Or just eat better? What do you think about people who think switching back to meat will bring them better health?

More from the Vegetarian Times interview with Chris Walla:

“Were it not for our freezer stash of Amy’s Frozen meals, the bus would be a much grumpier place. Eating healthy makes it easier to get along.”

They’re smiling, so they must have had some of Amy’s burritos recently. And what’s with the hand over the mouth-is he belching?

Death Cab For Cutie Play Sydney

The October 2008 issue of Vegetarian Times features a short Q&A session with Death Cab For Cutie’s Chris Walla with writer Gabrielle Harradine. Check your mail, it’s probably there already. If you don’t subscribe, what the heck are you waiting for? Get your veggie butts to the grocery stands already!

Anyway, there is a site called Cooking With Rock Stars, which features, you guessed it, musicians and their favorite recipes. Chris Walla has his “Peanut Butter Veggie Sausage Toast,” recipe posted. In the interview with Harradine, he said:

“It sounds wrong, but it’s really good! Ideally, you use Lightlife Gimme Lean Sausage and Sourdough bread: Toast a slice of bread and spread peanut butter on it; then grill the sausage in your favorite oil, halve them lengthwise, salt to taste, and place them on the toasted bread.”

This sounds almost as bad as RZA’s veggie patty between waffles. But we have to trust Chris on this one. If anyone tries this out, please let us know!
