Hayden And Pamela: Leather Blind Leading Leather Blind

Senator John Kerry and Hayden Panettierre Hold Press Conference to End Commercial Whaling - January 29, 2008

The cheerleader from “Heroes,” Hayden Panettiere, who is rumored to be dating Milo Ventimiglia, has ruffled some feathers (fake ones of course) ever since the news broke of her decision to design handbags with Dooney & Bourke made from calf skin.

The vegetarian actress has been very outspoken on animal rights issues, such as saving whales from Japanese hunters who capture them for research purposes, so it was quite a shock to hear she’s using animals for fashion purposes.

Peta is using the opportunity to educate Hayden and made the following statement via media rep Heather Carlson:

“When celebrities get involved with animal rights in any way, we’re happy to work with them. Even if it’s on just one issue. Hayden has been wonderful on issues involving the slaughter of dolphins and whales. We are sure that she’ll extend her concern for abused animals to those less popular, like cows who are skinned for bags and shoes, once she sees our undercover footage, which we’ll be sending to her.”

Interestingly enough, the video is narrated by Pamela Anderson, who just signed a deal to promote fashions with Vivienne Westwood, who although stopped using fur, still uses leather in her creations.

Is this the leather blind leading the leather blind?

Guess Leona Lewis is one of the only true celebrity vegetarians who doesn’t eat meat or wear it.

Amitabh Bachchan Urged To Remove Meat From Live Earth Menu

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, November 27th, 2008 in Actors, Bollywood, Food & Drink.

An Evening With Amitabh Bachchan

Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan has been urged to only serve vegetarian food at India’s Live Earth festival on December 7th, 2008. Bachchan is the spokeman for this year’s event.

Live Earth is an annual event which features live performing artists and talks given by famous environmentally conscious people (Al Gore is in this year’s lineup) to raise awareness about environmental issues. Peta’s letter to Bachchan equates serving meat at a festival about improving eco-friendly relations to giving out cigarettes at an anti-cancer event. Ouch! Point taken.

“On behalf of PETA, India and all our members and supporters, we respectfully ask you to kindly ensure that no meat is served at the event by urging the event’s organisers to honour the spirit and goal of Live Earth by serving only vegetarian food, ” said Peta’s Chief Functionary, Anuradha Sawhney, in a letter to Bachchan.

“By doing so, you will send a strong message, that people can save the planet simply by changing their dietary habits. After all, selling meat at a concert to benefit the environment would be like selling cigarettes at a cancer charity fund-raiser.”

“We also hope that you will take the opportunity to talk about the benefits of a vegetarian diet during the event, thereby educating millions of people watching worldwide. The animals and the environment would thank you – if they could – for taking such a noble step on their behalf.”

Some celebrities expected to perform include Will.I.Am, Anoushka Shankar, and Bon Jovi.

Benjamin Zephaniah Invites You To Talk To Turkeys

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, November 27th, 2008 in Authors.

When you first start reading poet Benjamin Zephaniah’s, “Talking Turkeys,” you hear him asking you to pardon turkeys for Christmas.

Be nice to yu turkeys dis christmas
Cos’ turkeys just wanna hav fun
Turkeys are cool, turkeys are wicked
An every turkey has a Mum

You would think Thanksgiving would have been included. But we know Benjamin is a hard-core vegan who wouldn’t want turkeys eaten any holiday, so he must have been in the Christmas groove when he wrote it and that’s perfectly alright.

Since so many people are eating and not talking to their turkeys today, we thought it’d be cool to include a few lines from Zephaniah’s, “Talking Turkeys,” poem. Enjoy!

Yeah, I got lots of friends who are turkeys
Dey all hav a right to a life,
Not to be caged up an genetically made up
By any farmer an his wife

Turkeys just wanna play reggae
Turkeys just wanna hip-hop
Can yu imagine a nice young turkey saying,
‘I cannot wait for de chop’,
Turkeys like getting presents, dey wanna watch christmas TV,
Turkeys hav brains an turkeys feel pain
In many ways like yu an me
