GZA–The Force Behind Wu-Tang Clan’s Vegetarianism

GZA

GZA is one of the founding members of the hip hop group Wu Tang Clan. This leader is not only an entrepreneur, he’s also an activist–he convinced the rest of the guys to go vegetarian. GZA interviewed with Eater on his diet, the band and his favorite veggie restaurants to patronize.

It all started with pork:
Yeah, none of the Clan members eat pork but you only have about four of us that are vegetarians, including DJ Mathematics — RZA, GZA, MastaKilla and oh! I think Meth is vegetarian now too! Cuz I used to always get on him with his steaks. I used to say you “you eatin’ a pig pussy T-Bone?” He’d be like, “C’mon Jus, cmon, GZA, man stop!” And then about a year and a half ago he was like, “You know I’m a vegetarian now, right?” I heard Redman was one too now actually.

Natalie Portman, Ghostface Killah Can Make Tunes, Tofu Together

Natalie Portmans MakingOf Project - New York City

Warning: This post gets somewhat graphic. But it’s also hilarious.

In a chat with Jake Gyllenhaal for Interview magazine, vegetarian Natalie Portman revealed she liked listening to dirty hip hop music.

“Really, really obscene hip-hop. I love it so much. It makes me laugh and then it makes me want to dance. Those are like my two favorite things, so combined … I’ve been listening a lot lately to ‘Wait (The Whisper Song)’ by the Ying Yang Twins, where the lyrics are like, ‘Wait ’til you see my dick’—which is just amazing because it’s whispered. [whispers] ‘Wait ’til you see my dick … ’ [laughs] Crazy. So I just listen to it like I’m a five-year-old, like, ‘Oh my god! I can’t believe he just said that!’”

Ghostface Killah of Wu Tang Clan, also a vegetarian heard of this and now is certain he and Natalie should make music together!

“When I read that, it was, like, ‘Oh, [bleep], she would love the [bleep] I got right here on this album!’ It was wild, ‘cause I remember her as the little girl in The Professional, and now she’s all about the wild [bleep].” Killah adds, “Yo, if you see her, give her my number. Tell her we gotta make some music together.”

A collaboration like this could get interesting.

At least the two will able to agree on snack food in the studio.

Method Man’s Method Woman Is Off The Meat Rack

Fox Network New Season Launch Event

Method Man and Redman have recorded a new album, Blackout! Vol. 2, and their latest rhymes have some veggie rhythms to them.

We would never promote the use of drugs, but feel it’s necessary to emphasize that although Method raps about following Amy Winehouse’s lead and rejecting rehab, at least his Method Woman is off meat.

From track 12, Dis Iz 4 All My Smokers:

They tried to make me go to rehab, no
Tell my P.O. that I ain’t trying to let the weed bag go
You can catch me in the whip pushing the seats back slow, my chick’s a vegan, that mean she off the meat rack, though.

If you’re interested in reading more about Blackout! Vol. 2, you’ll have to do so here on this mobile phone. Either we are late in the game learning about this type of blogging or someone at Vibe’s really creative.

Method Man is a member of the veg group Wu-Tang Clan.

Masta Killa-Jamel Irief Wants African-Americans To Go Veg!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, March 10th, 2009 in Male Singers, Videos.

MTV Spankin New Music Week 2000

If you know anything about Masta Killa, you know he, like other members of the Wu Tang Clan love to kill-vegetables!

The vegetarian born Elgin Turner, who now goes by Jamel Irief, was recently enjoying a veggie meal at Brawta Caribbean Cafe in Brooklyn.

And you thought RZA was the only one who went by a dozen names.

Irief’s been working on a solo album that’s due in the spring, but while he’s not in the recording studio, he’s been busy preaching the veggie news, like recording a PSA for vegetarianism with his son.

He treated the writers at NY1.com to a meal at the Brawta Cafe (which isn’t vegetarian) to show how easy it is to get meatless food anywhere.

Irief wants to get the message out to everyone, especially those in the African-American community, where there are skyrocketing rates of diabetes and other obesity related diseases, that a vegetarian diet is the key to health.

“We kind of lost the natural way of ourselves, so it made us think differently and it made us eat differently. So of course, that affected my family just like a lot of other black families in the community. So without the proper knowledge itself, its impossible to really eat right,” said Irief.

You can watch a video of Irief talking about his veggie ways at NY1.com.

Times are tough, and most of you are probably pinching the pocketbook and food is no exception.

Beans, lentils, and pasta are a cheap way for veggies to survive, but have you considered grits? Better yet, grits with Morningstar Farms Veggie Bacon?

Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA has a song with Masta Killa and Allah Real from one of his albums, Birth of a Prince, called “Grits.”

RZA, like other members of  Wu Tang Clan, is a vegetarian and he sings about hard times and cheap eatin’ while mentioning “Morningstar Veggie Bacon go good with the grits.”

Masta Killa Ain’t A Killa Of Animals

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, February 2nd, 2009 in Male Singers, Videos.

Find out more about Masta Killa at peta2.com.

Is hip hop becoming vegetarianized?

Russell Simmons has always been open about his vegan lifestyle he’s practiced for almost a decade.

Recently, half of hip hop duo Capone-N-Noreaga, N.O.R.E., documented his successful weight loss by following a vegan diet and even changed the name of his blogs to reflect his diet switch.

Now, Masta Killa of Wu Tang Clan has recorded his PSA for vegetarianism. Good to know he’s not recording a PSA for the veggie burger on waffles his band mate RZA created.

Masta’s been vegetarian for 13 years, ever since he decided to forgo the turkey at Thanksgiving.

Perhaps what’s even more exciting is that he’s normally the group member who doesn’t give many interviews!

It’s great to see African-Americans speak up about vegetarianism and hopefully, they can influence other minorities to adopt the lifestyle known to reduce their chances of developing diabetes and high blood pressure, illnesses known to disproportionately affect those communities.

If Masta Killa doesn’t convince you to go veg, his adorable son, Eternal sure will.

Boo To Wu: Wu-Tang Weather Tech Boot Contains Suede

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008 in Bands, Fashion, Male Musicians, Male Singers, Not So Vegetarian.

Giancarlo Esposito teams with Subaru to debut his new film Gospel Hill at the 2008 Democratic Convention

No thumbs up on this one, RZA.

Most members of the Wu-Tang Clan hip hop group are either vegetarian (RZA, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Masta Killa) or have been outspoken on animal rights issues in the past (GZA). So when the group collaborated with Fila shoes to produce a shoe with their name branded on it, the Wu-Tang Weather Tech Boot, you’d think it’d be cruelty free as well. No such luck.

Along with it’s “molded rubberized vamp, d-ring lacing system and padded ankle collars,” the Wu-Tang Weather Tech Boot contains an “oiled suede upper.” Boo to the Wu!

So while we were hoping RZA and his boys would follow the steps of other veggie metrosexual men and associate himself with a vegan shoe, like Frank Iero and his MacBeth’s, he’s let us down this time. This is even grosser than his veggie burger with fried egg on waffles.

Thanks Vegblog

RZA Introduces His “RZA Veggie Burger”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, August 12th, 2008 in Actors, Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Premiere of Columbia Picture's

As promised, we like to bring you oldies but goodies. RZA is an actor, rapper, musician, and producer of the group Wu-Tang Clan. Born Robert Diggs, he uses an awful lot of other names such as Bobby Digital, Ruler Zig-Zag-Zig Allah, Bobby Steels, Rzarector, Abbott, and Prince Rakeem.

A year ago when he was touring in Europe, Time Out took a little time out to ask him questions about his veg lifestyle. He’s created his own veggie burger, the RZA Burger. With all the stars doing their own food lines lately, we’re wondering if the RZA burger can give Boca a run for their money. One catch though: The RZA burger is served on waffles!  While we’re not flocking to the stores to request them, maybe there will be a niche market somewhere.

You’re touring Europe right now with the Wu-Tang Clan. I know you keep a strict vegetarian diet—what are you eating over there?
The Grand Hyatt in Berlin definitely came strong with the spicy rigatoni. Berlin also had a good butternut-squash soup. In the old days it was terrible over here for a vegetarian. Nowadays they stepped their game up, yo. The whole Clan’s been saying it.

What’s a RZA burger?
A RZA burger is a veggie patty with a fried egg, cheese, lettuce, pickles and all that, smashed between two delicious waffles. Spread mustard and mayo on it with a little butter and put that shit together. Trust me, son, that shit needs to be in stores.

I’m sold. Do you bust out the grill on tour?
If I have my special tour bus ready by then, you may be able to get a burger. If I’m on the regular tour bus, then bong bong.

Read the rest of what RZA, Bobby Digital, Ruler Zig-Zag-Zig Allah, Bobby Steels, Rzarector, Abbott, and Prince Rakeem have to say here.
