Urban Outfitters

It was recently discovered that Urban Outfitters was selling real fur under a faux label.

An unfortunate event, as this store could have been trusted by many animal lovers due to its popularity. It’s even on the Humane Society’s Fur-Free Retailers list.  However, Urban Outfitters has acknowledged the mistake, citing the product vendor’s factory as the source of the labelling issue and insists it remains committed to keeping its pledge not to sell fur items.

Ethical fashion blogger Joshua Katcher, who also blogs at TheDiscerningBruite.com, purchased the item from Urban Outfitters, the “S Loves C by Spring & Clifton Faux Fur Cardigan,” and put the garment through several test that can determine if something is real or fake fur.

How can one get any work done when you’re chowing down on good food?

We’d like to ask Joshua Katcher at The Discerning Brute this question, as he sat down with MTV news reporter John Norris at the Jivamukti Yoga Cafe and School enjoying delicious food such as grilled portabello pesto with hummus pannini and and signature salads made with black beans and home grown sprouts.

Yum!

Joshua and John touched on veganism and the vegan community between bites.

“Working in music, the majority of vegans I meet come at it from less an animal rights point of view than they do from a straight edge or some kind of more personal health concern,” John says.

John is a vegan both of out animal rights compassion and the belief that “we’re not as a species, worth more than any other species.”

Watch the clip for the entire interview and tell us why you chose to go vegan.

DBTV: Davey Havok of AFI (1 of 3) from The Discerning Brute on Vimeo.

Davey Havok does a three part interview with blogger Joshua Katcher @ The Discerning Brute.

Part one goes into how a man can be ethically handsome. Davey misheard Joshua and thought he said “ethnically” handsome, which results in some laughter, since Davey is of Italian heritage and Joshua is Jewish.

“Having ethical beauty is something that is very rare in our world,” Davey said.

Davey stays ethically handsome by following a vegan diet and even has his own vegan clothing line.

“I am definitely, personally, an environmentalist by way of being vegan,” Davey continues. “If the world were vegetarian or vegan, the impact that it would have on the environment or biosphere would be far greater than if people stopped driving cars.”

Part 2 and 3 of the interview series go live Wednesday and Thursday at Thediscerningbrute.com.

Tim Gunn Tells How To Get The Faux Caveman Look

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, February 26th, 2009 in Fashion, Fur, Videos.

Vegan, ethical blogger Discerning Brute caught up with fashion expert and Project Runway’s Tim Gunn during Fashion Week in New York to get his thoughts on fur in the fashion industry.

Gunn has recorded an anti-fur video in the past and has such a fearful reputation, fur wearing celebrities run the opposite direction when they see him.

He explained to The Brute that while he doesn’t necessarily advocate fake fur, there are plenty out there for those interested in getting that “cavemen look.”

“If someone wants to look like a cavemen…if that’s the look that they want, they sure have a good one [selection of fake fur],” Gunn said.

Check out the video to hear Tim talk, and if you’re a speed reader, you can view the credit roll that appears in the video listing all the fur-free fashion designers.
