Masterchef India, a spin-off of the original British version of Masterchef, is going vegetarian for its fourth season.

Co-judge chef Ranveer Brar, known for his culinary expertise on Indian cooking shows such as Breakfast Xpress, Snack Attack, The Great Indian Rasoi and Health Bhi Taste Bhi, discussed how going meat-free in a nation that maintains a heavily plant-based diet has opened up possibilities, both in terms of the variety of dishes prepared and the chefs who will be showcasing their talents.

Nikki Dinki

Nikki Dinki is Masterchef season nine’s flexitarian chef with the philosophy of “meat of the side.”

Vegetarian Star brought you one of Dinki’s recipes for vegan sloppy joes last week, and for today’s Meatless Monday, it’s time for a Dinki encore!

There’s no better way to symbolize the plant-based life than with the color green and if you looked up the phrase veggie sauce in the food dictionary, Dinki’s Green Sauce (which is actually more of a green dip), would be the first picture accompanying the entry.

Nikki Dinki is the Masterchef contestant with the flexitarian philosophy of “meat on the side.”

While many vegetarians applaud her attempt to get everyone to eat less meat, some were a little less than pleased that on a recent episode she put real meat in a burger with vegetables versus making a vegetable burger or other plant-based entree and actually putting the meat on the side.

Dinki’s vegetarian sloppy joes more than make up for this faux meat faux pas.

Coming from an area in Maryland that is big on crabmeat, Helene Leeds said her mother threatened to disown her when she switched to a vegan diet.

The Masterchef finalist isn’t used to making crabmeat and that’s probably why she performed poorly during the challenge on Gordon Ramsay‘s Fox television series.

It’s too bad she couldn’t show off her cooking skills with the vegan dish that got her into the top 36 finalists.

“Masterchef” Puts Vegetarian Chef Ahead Of Competition

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 14th, 2011 in Chefs, Film & TV, Food & Drink, Reality TV, Recipes.

Reality TV has a way of giving the vegetarian the shaft. And not the juicy, nutritious celery kind either.

Often, the contestant has to choose between continuing to compete or eating meat, cooking meat or gets lambasted by judges, competitors and blogs for cooking meatless dishes.

This season, BBC’s Masterchef tells a different story. One of the four finalists in the competition is known for her vegetarian dishes and Mastechef’s co-presenter Greg Wallace is impressed.
