REM’s Michael Stipe, Peter Buck Have Vegetarian Code Words

Singer Michael Stipe and guitarist Peter Buck of the musical group REM are both vegetarians, so it shouldn’t come as a surprised that they’d be concerned about the food options while on tour, whether it’d be backstage or in a hotel.

When Stipe and Buck took part in a discussion before a show about how much fruit and vegetarian food was going to be at an after party, a journalist joked that maybe these terms meant something else. In the world of rock and roll, there are often code words for drugs, alcohol, and women.

Nope. Fruits and veggies really do mean fruits and veggies. Boring, but true.

“It’s about respect,” Buck said, referring to ensuring vegetarian options were available.

Stipe once owned a vegetarian restaurant and juice bar in Athens, Georgia, where the group all met up as students. It closed, but he is now the owner of the building which houses The Grit, a successful veg eatery in the same town.

Linda McCartney Food Sales Give Family Reason To Celebrate

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, November 20th, 2008 in Fashion, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Live 8 London - Stage

The late Linda McCartney designed a range of vegetarian frozen meals that remain with her family just as much as her spirit. When the McCartneys are together for a family event, they say they often eat the Vegetarian Roast as a meal.

They have much to celebrate, as according to the Dereham Times, Linda’s food range has experienced a 20% increase in sales every year. In a tough and unpredictable economy, it’s job security for the more than 180 workers in the Hain Frozen Food factory located at Fakenham.

Ironically, it may be the tough economy that’s helping to boost sales, thus providing job security. Meat can be expensive, especially in comparison to the nuts, legumes, and pastas that are available to those eating vegetarian.  Some who give financial advice recommend even meat eaters go vegetarian for one day of the week in order to save money.

An article in Divine Caroline listed 19 of the 20 healthiest foods under $1 as vegetarian, and 17 of them were vegan, including protein rich garbanzo beans, tofu, and nuts!

Do you know of any veg foods/vegetarian combinations of food that are cheap yet tasty?

“I think that the only reason I don’t look like I’m a 130 years old after a lifetime of touring so much and living in hotel rooms, and drinking too much, is that I’ve been a vegan now for 22 years.

Normally friends of mine, when they wake up and they’re hungover, they go out and have bacon and eggs and smoke cigarettes. When I wake up, I have a smoothie and vegan burritos.”

Paris Hilton Parents: Benji Is Perfect Vegan Son-In-Law

Jade Jagger Unveils Belvedere's Jagger Dagger

Paris Hilton’s parents are absolutely thrilled with their daughter’s latest boy toy, Good Charlotte rocker Benji Madden.

They’re already referring to him like family, according to Robin Leach’s Vegas Luxe Life Blog.  So just what makes Benji such a good man?

Momma Hilton Kathy said:

“He’s changed her life—and I really think she’s genuinely in love for the first time. He’s so good to her and for her. We couldn’t be happier for them. This has honestly become the real thing.”

But most importantly, Papa Hilton Rick said:

“Benji is the perfect example of, ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover. He is polite, well mannered, and he even calls me sir. We love him like family already. Benji doesn’t drink, doesn’t smoke and is a healthy vegan!”

Papa Hilton giving props to Benji being a vegan? Wooohooo!

Paris and Benji have said they have plans for marriage, but nothing is definite yet. If you recall us telling you, the two had a meal after the premiere of her new movie Repo! The Genetic Opera where Benjji ate vegetable spring rolls, but Paris gobbled up some disgusting mini cheeseburger sliders.

If daddy is so impressed with Benji’s veganism, will he convince his little girl to follow her (future) husband’s lead?

Paul McCartney Gone Wild: Eating Sugar, Playing China

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, November 17th, 2008 in Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Celebs at Stella McCartney Fashion Show - Paris

Paul McCartney is playing the role of bad boy these days. He relaxed a lot of his strict habits, which include avoiding sugar. Gasp!

According to The Telegraph  when asked what he’s putting in his tea these days, he replied, “Milk and sugar. Sugar these days, yes. I know not many people dare to take sugar these days, but I’m just reckless.”

Reckless, indeed. Perhaps even more astonishing is his decision to play in China, a country he vowed not to step foot in after watching a documentary on their use of cats and dogs for fur.

“I wouldn’t even dream of going over there to play, in the same way I wouldn’t go to a country that supported apartheid. This is just disgusting… I couldn’t go there. If they want to consider themselves a civilised nation, they’re going to have to stop this.”

Now, he has been reported to tell a radio station, “I’ve never played in China, I’m kind of interested to see what that’s like. There’s lots of places I’ve never played, but I think China would be the answer.”

Is this Paul wanting one last wild ride as he reaches, ahem, maturity? Or perhaps it has to do with the company he’s keeping.

It was watching the dog and cat fur documentary with this then wife, Heather Mills, that prompted him to swear off China. And she reportedly also liked to enforce strict rules about eating.

Rebellion hits everyone sooner or later.

Peace One Day - Stage Performances

Rachael Ray is really feeling some love from vegetarians and vegans lately.

First, we learned of how her brand new cookbook that she calls BOB, features an entire chapter of recipes devoted to meatless cooking.

Now, she’s featuring vegan musician Bryan Adams’ favorite juice recipe in the December ’08/January ’09 issue of Everyday With Rachael Ray.

Adams must stock up on a lot of pineapples, ginger, and peaches when he goes to the grocery store.

Best of all, the Pineapple-Ginger Juice recipe is completely sweetened by nature.

May we suggest drinking this to wash down your Thanksgiving Tofurky feast this year?

Meatless Mouthful: Vegan Moby Doesn’t Judge Meat Eaters

2008 Woodies Awards are presented in New York

“When I was about 18 years old, I had this realization — I’ve always loved animals, I love my dog, I love my cat — and I had this simple realization that I wouldn’t want to be involved with anything that would cause my dog to suffer, therefore I shouldn’t be involved in anything that causes other animals to suffer. That led me to be a vegan.”

“I do try to be a nonjudgmental vegan, so if someone chooses to eat meat that’s their choice, just for myself and keeping my conscience relatively clear, I choose not to.”
