“It’s made me feel great. I still feel young, totally healthy. I’ve fought in the sport for many years and I feel like it’s something that’s helped me tremendously. But I’ve never eaten meat, so I can’t compare the two and say, ‘This is what it does better.’ But all the people I know who have gone from eating meat to not eating meat say they feel much better.”

The doctor is in and has given his expert opinion on whether tofu stir fry and coconut milk hinder the ability of athletes like Jon Fitch and Jake Shields to perform.

Medical columnist for MMA Junkie, Dr. Johnny Benjamin states: “As long as the total calorie intake remains constant between vegans and meat-eaters, it really doesn’t matter the source – where it’s plants or meat (we’re obviously not talking junk food here). Also, with the abundance of high-quality supplements and vitamins, ingesting the necessary amounts of amino acids and trace minerals is not very difficult for vegetarians.”

Jake Shields Makes UFC Debut With Mean Meatless Attitude

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, October 14th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Athletes-Games-Sports, Food & Drink.

Jake Shields may break the rules by being one of the few beginners to get a chance at the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s welterweight title next year. The former Strikeforce Middleweight champion is expected to face off with Martin Kampmann in UFC 121 next week, making it his debut UFC fight. If he wins on October 23rd, he’ll probably face the winner of the Georges St. Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck battle.

He’s still knocking over his competitors without meat, as he explained to USA Today in an interview.

“I feel really healthy and really clean this way,” Shields said.

“I’m not a preachy kind person, but. … if you watch videos of all those slaughterhouses and the way everything’s raised, to me that’s just gross. It’s not something I want to be a part of.”
