The dress code for the amfAR Inspiration Gala last week at the New York Public Library was black tie/black leather.

New York magazine asked Cyndi Lauper if she followed the code of real or fake leather, to which the 80s pop icon replied, “Oh, fake leather and real leather. You’re always looking to see which one is less hot. Like, temperature hot. I eat meat; I’m not a vegetarian. Do I think animals are treated badly? Yes, and it’s awful. But I do eat it, and I wear real leather.”

Whether it’s 90 degrees or 9, real leather is as old as Lauper’s first MTV video, but thankfully, you don’t have to be stuck in the 80s with so many leather alternatives, as an extensive database listing retail sources for many accessories, including fake leather shoes, guitar straps, computer cases, biking gloves and even sports balls exists.

“America’s Next Top Model” Cycle 14–The Value Of Faux (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, April 26th, 2010 in Fashion, Models, Videos.

The gals from America’s Next Top Model Cycle 14 were recently taught a lesson on how to fake it.

To illustrate how buying knock off designs hurt the original designers, the models posed in everything fake–including fake fur.

According to the clip above, the fashion industry loses about about $9.2 billion dollars a year from counterfeit goods like the fake Prada bags the photographer pretending to be a salesman on the street was offering.

Of course, sometimes it’s good to be fake.

The costs of real fur?

According to Mercy for Animals, here is the bottom line.

“Of the 31 million animals killed on fur ranches each year, about twenty-six million are mink and 4.5 million are fox. In addition, 250,000 chinchillas, 150,000 sable, 100,000 fitch, 100,000 raccoon dogs (a separate species from the American raccoon), and a small number of lynx, bobcat, and nutria are fur farmed.”

“Project Runway” Makes Trash Classier Than Leather (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, April 26th, 2010 in Fashion, Reality TV, Videos.

Stella McCartney said that wearing leather is just plain trashy.

One contestant from Season 7’s Project Runway thought the same, so he proved even a trash bag looks better than animal hide.

The outfit, including the woven belt, is contructed entirely from Hefty’s, and is meant is resemble faux leather.

Jay Nicolas Sario said he thought of the words, “Sexy bitch,” when he created the outfit.

The judges are impressed and one said, We’ve seen many garbage bags on Project Runway, but never quite like this.”

Take a look and decide for yourself.

Could this faux be taken for real?

Jill Zarin Book Party New York City

Jill Zarin just released her book, Secrets of a Jewish Mother, and held a launch party at her husband’s store, Zarin Fabrics, in New York City.

The Real Housewives of New York City reality star recently presented a copy of the book in a Zarin Fabrics bag to Ok! magazine.

Zarin Fabrics may be a great place to stop by the next time you’re redecorating.

The drapery and upholstery fabric shop carries a selection of faux suede and leather skins in a variety of colors, including green, buckskin brown, sand, dark brown, brick brown, camel and white.

A trip to the NYC warehouse might eliminate your need to drape those discount sheets over the couch to cover up the holes and stains.

Blake Lively “You Know You Want It” Stella McCartney Boots

'You Know You Want It' by Eric Daman Book Party!

Blake Lively wore a pair of thigh high faux leather Stella McCartney boots to the launch party of the book, You Know You Want It: Style Inspiration Confidence by Eric Daman.

Damon is the costume designer for Gossip Girl.

These boots look so snug and comfy, they must feel like second skin.

It’s great that Lively chose to wear Stella’s cruelty-free fashion, instead of taking another animal’s skin.

This completely makes up for Blair and Serena making fun of seitan months ago.

Wonder if Daman is just as ethical on the set of Gossip Girl.

Rihanna Stella McCartney Bag

After seeing what could possibly have been a family of animals on Rihanna for the photo shoot for her new album, our nerves are starting to subside now that RiRi’s been spotting wearing what looks to be a Stella McCartney bag.

According to BagThatStyle.com, Rihanna is wearing a Stella McCartney chain detailed Tote, which can be found at Net-A-Porter.

Yes, there are always knockoffs and some designer could be copying Stella’s style, but we’re thinking a superstar like Rihanna goes for the real deal.

At any rate, you can grab yourself a handbag like Rihanna and Run This Town and any other town without leather!
