Daryl Hannah has been to a lot of places since she left her hometown of Chicago, Illinois in the United States to pursue an acting career.

Most recently her adventures took her to England to raise awareness for biodiversity, but she says the best meals she eats overseas are in Italy.

When not in Italy, she’s probably brown bagging it.

“I usually bring my own food because I’m a vegetarian and you can’t always count on finding good vegetarian food abroad,” the actress told The Independent, which profiles some of her travel experiences.

Organic Travel is a great place to start for veggie friendly adventure seekers looking to maintain their quality of life on the road by serving as directory for organic stores and restaurants, farmer’s markets, smoke-free and environmentally friendly hotels and more.

Thumbing through the restaurant listings in East Sussex, for example, leads you to Terre a Terre Vegetarian Restaurant which serves items like Hoisin Tofu with pickled ginger and Smoked Sakuri Soba. Vegan and gluten-free items are also designated on the menu.

Organic Travel allows you to search by United States listings or Worldwide, and by categories such as sustainable events, natural parks, and green lodging.

Benefit For The Whaleman Foundation

Do you remember the moment you took pork off the fork?

Actress Daryl Hannah met a calf she couldn’t resist and it only took one kiss for her to give up veal and other animals for the rest of her life.

“I was 11 and on a road trip with my family,” Hannah said. “I saw a truck with some baby calves on it and for about an hour I petted and kissed this one calf and he was kissing me. This man came up and I said, ‘Excuse me Sir, what’s this calf’s name?’ and he just said, ‘Veal, tomorrow morning at seven.’ ”

“That was it. I could no longer disassociate the meal on the plate from the creature it had been.”

Daryl Hannah Vegan Thanksgiving Plan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, November 11th, 2009 in Actresses, Animal Issues.

Environmental Media Awards 2009

How do you plan to spend Thanksgiving?

Tortured at a relative’s house eating side dishes because they always fail to accommodate you?

Making your own tofu turkey for the first time?

Daryl Hannah plans to spend the day with a few turkeys, and we don’t mean foolish people either.

She’ll be at Animal Acres Sanctuary in Acton, California.

“They do an Adopt a Turkey day — rather than slaughter a turkey you adopt a turkey and feed it, and they have a nice, big vegan dinner too.”

Animal Acres is home to chickens, cows, pigs and all sorts of critters, but did you know they can also pronounce you husband and wife (or husband and husband or wife and wife).

That’s right, there’s no need for Vegas, because you can get married at Animal Acres and receive the assistance of their staff for set up and clean up, recommendation for vegan caterers and even a sanctuary tour.

If you choose the goat to be the best man, they cannot mediate family disputes.

No, Alcohol for Sustainable Living doesn’t mean ensuring the wine bar is stocked throughout your college days.

It’s the way of thinking that we can use ethanol for a variety of purposes-from powering cars to heating homes.

Veggie stars Daryl Hannah and Ed Begley Jr. were present at the recent Alcohol For Sustainable Living Press Conference in LA, where both talked about their views on using ethanol as fuel for vehicles.

“I’m a big fan of non-petroleum ways of moving ourselves around,” Hannah said, “including electric cars running on renewable energy and biofuels, which is why I was a cofounder of the Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance.”

Hannah showed off the 6.6-liter Trans-Am from Kill Bill, which she converted to alcohol with David Blume‘s, who wrote Alcohol can be a Gas, help.

According to Blume, driving your own drunken Kill Bill (but not driving drunk, as that’s irresponsible and dangerous) with E85 ethanol could eliminate the need for oil dependency in a few years.

Daryl Hannah & Hilary Shepard Promote The Game Liebrary

Daryl Hannah recently spoke at the Project Green Summit that benefited the Texas Trees Foundation and the North Texas Clean Air Coalition.

Hannah, a longtime vegetarian and unlike Al Gore, is not afraid to bring up the subject of not eating meat to protect the planet.

Oooh. Did we just bust on Al Gore?

“The meat industry puts out more carbon emissions than the transportation industry,” Hannah said. “Even giving up meat for a weekend, helps.”

Hannah warned against getting off the hook with carbon offsets and offered ways people could green their life directly.

“It is less important to offset and more important to ask the question: Do I need so much stuff? We need re-evaluate our lifestyles…for our own health and our kids’ future. And we’ll save money in the long run. ”

Hannah added that you should “get the poisons out of your house,” and ensure your cleaning and cosmetic products are environmentally friendly and biodegradable.

Being a good looking environmentalist has its perks.

Daryl said that when she was recently arrested for protesting, cops asked to have their pictures taken with her.

Hope she made them promise to recycle and give up meat one day of the week.

Meatless Mouthful: Daryl Hannah On Choosing One Cause

Screening Of Home At Stella McCartneys Store - Arrivals

“You know, a lot of people say: ‘What are you? An environmentalist? A humanitarian? We’re confused.’ They want to put you in a little box. They don’t understand unless you pick one thing and that’s your thing — unless you say: ‘I’m fighting for all shoes to be vegan shoes.’ I just can’t work that way — it’s all interconnected to me, and what I’d like to do is help people understand that interconnection — that if you buy a T-shirt from a chainstore, it may have been made with sweatshop labour, it may have been made by little kids, it definitely took more than nine years of drinking water to make that T-shirt, and it probably was processed with a whole bunch of chemicals as well. That’s sort of what my challenge is — to help people understand that everything you do, or everything you don’t do, has an effect.”

—-Actress Daryl Hannah, in an interview with independent.ie, on what she says when people ask if she has a focus.

It’s hard for an environmentalist to eat steak and chicken every day and not look like a hypocrite. Ditto for vegetarians who don’t buy leather-free shoes. And whether you buy the locally grown produce that took less fuel to get to the dinner table or make the choice to walk those few blocks instead of revving up the car-everything has an effect.
