Gandhi Birthday Celebrated By Google And Vegetarians

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 2nd, 2009 in Animal Issues, Birthdays, Food & Drink.

Young Gandhi

Today is Gandhi‘s birthday, and if you look on Google.com, you’ll see the tech folks in Mountain View, California have chosen to honor him in a very special way.

Gandhi was a vegetarian for most of his life, especially as he grew older and became more spiritual.

Some of his famous quotes were about humanity and the treatment of animals.

Our favorite message from Gandhi would have to be the following:

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

How would Gandhi judge our nation today?

Meatless Mouthful: Stella McCartney Runs Entire Ethical Gamut

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 2nd, 2009 in Fashion, Meatless Mouthful.

Stella McCartney at 'The Corner' in Berlin, Germany

“We often say that we are not perfect, but at the same time, more and more people like to talk about this side of our brand. There are definitely other aspects to consider. There are organic fabrics, low impact dyes. My fashions are mainly made in Italy, so child labor is not an issue for us. We work a lot on fair trade. The first question that comes up when we open a store is ‘Can we use wind power?’ Sometimes we can, sometimes we can’t. Because it’s a mindset, it comes quite naturally.”

—-Stella McCartney, in an interview with Above Magazine, on the ethical issues besides not using leather or fur, on maintaining an ethical fashion line.

Hey There Delilah, did you know the lead singer for Plain White T’s is vegetarian?

Shown here in his new vegetarian PSA, lead singer Tom Higgenson, has publicly announced he’s a meat free rocker.

“It’s not easy to think about where meat comes from,” the ad reads. “Someone else does all the disgusting dirty work for you, so you don’t have to see how much the animal suffers. If you love animals or don’t think hurting them is the right thing to do, then just stop eating them. It’s easy.”

Stephanie Birkitt David Letterman Meaty Scandal

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 2nd, 2009 in Food & Drink, Not So Vegetarian, TV Hosts, Videos.

By now you’ve already heard the scandalous story surrounding The Late Show host David Letterman, his affair with personal assistant Stephanie Birkitt, and the extortion fail by Robert “Joe” Halderman.

Since you can get that smut information anywhere else on the web, we thought we’d break to you an even bigger controversy surrounding David and Stephanie.

Stephanie would often hand audience members prizes during some of David’s quizzes like the “Know Your Current Events” featured in the video above, where she can be seen around minute 3:30.

Besides “Know Your Current Events”, Dave also featured Know Your Cuts of Meat, where an audience member was shown a piece of meat and asked to identify it.

Yes, that’s right. Slabs of loin, shoulder, rib and dozens of other parts full of animals that had been passed around and manhandled more than an intern on Capital Hill.

And don’t even get us started on the whoring of those future meat cuts known as factory farm dairy cows who, unlike other pimps, farmers are hoping to knock up so they can get more milk.

“Know Your Cuts of Meat” is definitely not our in our Fave 5 for Letterman skits and we’re hoping in the future audience members can be quizzed (or rather given the answers before the clip so they’ll always get them right) on something like “Know Your 7 Grains in Bread” or “Know Your Completed Protein Pairs.”

Stella McCartney Enjoys Animal-Free Clothing Demand With Gucci

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 2nd, 2009 in Business, Fashion.

Stella McCartney in Berlin, Germany

Recession? Ha! What recession?

The demand for Stella McCartney‘s leather free items from Stella McCartney Ltd. has caused her sales to soar and given Stella reason to increase her salary by 60% thanks to a 70% raise in profits.

According to This Is London, fashion insiders say lifelong vegetarian Stella’s reputation for refusing to use fur and leather in her designs, which include clothing, shoes and handbags, and the demand for cruelty-free items is responsible for the financial celebration.

Stella left a French label, Chloe in 2001 to set up her fashion label with Gucci, but didn’t make profits until 2006.

It was rumored that the big wigs at Gucci were growing impatient with the slower than expected success.

Bet all are happy in the executive office now.

It pays to stick with your values.

Julian Winter: PETA Sexiest Over 50 Winner (Interview)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, October 2nd, 2009 in Food & Drink, Interviews.

Julian Winter

Julian Winter

Julian Winter is the male winner (along with his female counterpart, Mimi Kirk) in PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian over 50 contest. for 2009.  Julian is 51 and resides in the Framingham Massachusetts area.

VS: What led you to go veg?
JW: The first one involved shooting a deer. I grew up in an agricultural community and hunting is pretty common. I was young, I think I was 13 and I shot my first deer. It was kind of dramatic because it wasn’t a clean kill and we had to take care of it by hand, which wasn’t fun.

And ironically, it was sort of a bit of cosmic trickery, the following year we were out pheasant hunting and I got shot by another hunter. I was lucky I got out of that. That turned me off to hunting and at that point too I was just sort of considering [it]. Where we lived-I’m not disparaging agriculture-I grew up with the slaughterhouses. I know how animals are dealt with, I’ve watched it all the time-cattle and pigs and chickens and sheep. When I got old enough I kind of decided it was a choice. I didn’t have to eat that stuff. I was 17. Senior in high school. I’ve been vegan since ’99. The longer you’re a vegetarian, you just sort of keep going that way [toward veganism].

VS:Life changes since winning Sexiest Contest
JW: I actually take more grief from my daughters now. They’ve always liked to make fun of dad-old geezer according to them. I grew up, if you were 50 you’re over the Hill. I’ve got four daughters, I’ve never made it any kind of a mandate, but two of them are [vegetarian].

Food Voyeurism
JW: I love Morningstar; they have these veggie cakes that I eat. I love those. I usually have one of those a day in a sandwich. On a regular basis, I’m going to eat salad probably daily. Every type of vegetable I can get my hands on. I eat a lot of fruit. The Ezekiel Bread too. They make one with seeds and sprouts-it’s really good. There’s one dish that’s really good too. You take sprouted soy beans and sauté it, put sesame oil and soy sauce on it and sesame seeds on top. It’s really simple. Doesn’t sound like much, but it tastes so good. They’re some nice vegetarian and vegan restaurants in the Boston area, but I haven’t been there a lot because I work a lot and it’s hard to get out.

Meatless Mouthful: Author Discovers Inner World Of Farm Animals

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, October 1st, 2009 in Animal Issues, Authors, Books.

The Inner World Of Farm Animals

The Inner World Of Farm Animals

“I think the complexity of the intelligence of the chickens was the most surprising to me. I was shocked to find out that they can count and use geometric principles, to name just a few of their capacities! I think the most disturbing thing is that, with scientific confirmation of how sentient, capable and aware all these animals are, it becomes even more unbearable to think about what happens to them on a daily basis on a factory farm. On a lighter note, one of the most heartwarming stories in the book is that of Debbie, a cow who fell to the ground because of her crippling arthritis. She was surrounded by 13 of her bovine friends, who mooed until help came. Sadly, Debbie had to be put to sleep. The cows then laid on her grave and mooed and cried. Then they disappeared into the forest for two days, not even coming out for their grains. The book is filled with stories like this, which show the loyalty, personalities, emotions and devotion of these animals.”

Amy Hatkoff, author of The Inner World Of Farm Animals, on the experiences and lessons that are included in her book.
