The Biggest Loser coach Bob Harper has stepped up his veggie eating game and gone completely vegan!

The once vegetarian who was a big loser in his cholesterol numbers–100 points–after dropping meat recently told VegNews that dumping all animal products from his diet has improved his health even more.

“I enjoy living a plant-based diet because it makes me feel clear headed and strong, not to mention my genetically high cholesterol dropped more than 100 points. That was all the motivation I needed.”

Harper, who has criticized high animal protein diets as a way to lose weight, recommends Biggest Loser contestants either follow a vegetarian diet, or one that is mostly plant based while competing on the show.

A brand new cookbook featuring contributions from The Biggest Loser contestants and staff is out, and season 6 competitor Nicole Michalik has contributed her delicious meat and dairy free recipe in Biggest Loser 6 Weeks To A Healthier You.

“Broke Bean Stew” features vegetable broth with your choice of chickpeas, kidney beans or black beans seasoned with onion, garlic and cumin among other spices and herbs.

“I love, love, love! It’s high in protein but totally vegetarian. It’s so easy to make and freezes very well. I make it at least once a month,” said Michalik.

And since there aren’t many ingredients in the recipe and beans are relatively cheap, you won’t go broke if you choose to make it several times a month.

This is definitely the kind of food vegetarian coach Bob Harper pitches on the show.

“These diets that are out there that say ‘I can eat all the protein and fat that I want and I’m going to lose weight. Well you know what? You’re absolutely going to lose weight when you eat like that. But what you’re doing to your heart and arteries with all that animal protein and fat — it’s damaging to the molecular structure of your body.”

Former The Biggest Loser contestant set out on yet another weight loss challenge after giving birth to her second son in 2008.

Suzy Hoover lost 95 pounds during the reality TV show in 2005, and her husband, Matt Hoover was season two’s winner.

To jumpstart her weight loss program, Hoover spent a week at The Biggest Loser Resort in Ivins, Utah, where her days were spent with long hikes and 45 minute workouts such as cycling.

What did Hoover eat to fuel all this activity?

US Magazine reports Hoover ate “1,200 calories a day fueled by veggie heavy meals.”

It’s no surprise The Biggest Loser Resort relies on food grown in the ground to help get attendees off the ground and on their way to less pounds.

Bob Harper, one of the coaches on the show, is a vegetarian who says he recommends all contestants either follow a vegetarian or diet with very little meat.

Harper’s diet “A” consists of protein from sources like beans and tofu, while diet “B” for competitors that absolutely refuse to quit meat consists of little amounts of lean meat, but still forces them to go heavy on the veggie.

Los Angeles Premiere Of "Black Dynamite" - Arrivals

January 1st has arrived and that means the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine 21 Day Vegan Kickstart program has begun!

As mentioned before, there are several celebrities that offer tips for keeping up your resolution of going veg, like John Salley‘s advice on helping children make good food decisions.

“Adults influence kids’ eating habits. We have to improve kids’ eating habits—and re-educate adults about what is food and what is not food. People can have pizza and pastries without dairy products and eggs. They can have tofu mozzarella cheese or egg substitute and they should use agave in place of high-fructose corn syrup and refined whole sugar.”

Rory Freedman is also there to be the cheerleader in case you do cheat.

“If you slip up and get off track, forgive yourself. It’s okay to be imperfect and to make mistakes. Try to do better, that’s all.”

But with recipes like her Green Goddess pasta, it might be hard to even think about falling off track.

And Bob Harper wants you to examine what’s on your plate before asking why you feel tired and crummy every evening. And hopefully, put some of his black bean quinoa salad on there.

“When you pay attention to what you eat, it becomes easier to understand your relationship with food and how it affects your day-to-day life.”
