Renowned chefs Alice Waters and Dan Barber have vowed to take bluefin tuna, a critically endangered fish that’s high in mercury, off their menus as part of the Center For Biological Diversity‘s campaign to protect them.

The campaign was launched on November 30, 2010, after the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas refused to take action to protect the species. Both the Western and Eastern Atlantic varieties of bluefin have declined in numbers by 80% since 1970 and 74% between 1957 and 2007, respectively.

Inspired by Lady Gaga’s meat attire, Private Practice actress Kate Walsh showed up for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno dressed in fish attire. From rings of sushi to prawn on the feet, Walsh dressed head to toe in imitation pieces of seafood. For the non-fish eating vegetarians, Walsh also stuck a few pieces of edamame on her body. There were no overfished species on the outfit, however, as she told the crowd.

“These are all totally sustainable fish, by the way. There’s no bluefin on here.”

Bluefin may be a popular fish used in sushi, but it’s being fished to extinction. Some have suggested replacing bluefin with Almaco jack, also known as kahala. Kahala is a distant relative of bluefin, but without the reddish hue and reproduces constantly throughout the year without hormones or environmental manipulations.

Captain Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd crew is about to embark on a mission to campaign to protect bluefin tuna.

This year for the first time, the International Convention for Trade in Endangered Species did not list any marine species on its list, something Watson feels has more to do with politics than science.

“That was under pressure from Japan and China,” Watson told Treehugger. “That’s never happened before. So five species of sharks, two species of coral, the polar bear and bluefin tuna were not listed when they should’ve been listed.”

Watson said bluefin are so endangered, they will probably be extinct in less than half a decade unless action is taken and that some fish not on the list are actually fewer in numbers than some mammals.

He added there are more bengal tigers than great white sharks, for example, but great white sharks are not listed as endangered. Still, other species, like the porbeagle shark, have been taken off the list.

“It’s a very serious situation, because this is the Planet Ocean not the Planet Earth. The problem is, the destruction of biodiversity in our world’s oceans, the diminishment of life in the oceans, means that if the oceans die then we die. I don’t think people get that message.”

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s star flagship, the Steve Irwin, will be docking in New York city from April 23-May 3 to rest between its Antarctic Whale Defense Campaign and prepare for its upcoming bluefin tuna one.

Tours of the boat will be given daily from approximately 10AM to 3PM and the crew will also be taking donations for their upcoming trip to fight blue fin tuna extinction.

From looking at the items in demand list, this crew knows how to eat vegan in style!

All donated items must be vegan, and the crew is especially in need of things like tofu, coconut cream, tahini, vegan cream cheese and vegan mayonnaise and nutritional yeast.

As expected, volunteers are needed for the tours.
