Jessica Simpson-Real Girls Adopt Rescue Dogs

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, October 19th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Female Singers.

Jessica Simpson In-Store Signing at Dillard's in Frisco, Texas - March 8, 2008

Now that she has grieved over the loss of her beloved Daisy, Jessica Simpson is talking about the excitement of getting a new dog.

Contrary to what her clothing says, real girls don’t eat me, but at least real girls know the importance of adopting versus going to a breeder or kennel.

“Jessica loves dog, but she’s terrified of getting another small dog unless she gets a big dog, too,” her friend explains. “She’s looking at German shepherds or pit bulls and wants a rescue dog,” the Simpson spy tells In Touch.

With an estimated 6-8 million cats and dogs going to shelters every year and only 3-4 million being adopted…the numbers tell a sad story on their own.

Congrats to Jessica for making the right decision.

Gretchen Ryan's "Little Pretty" Exhibition Opening

“First I debate with them. I love to be right, but will accept when I’m wrong. I respond to every critical email I get. If the critics are being irrational or we can’t agree to disagree respectfully, I say “SUCK IT” and carry on with my mission – which is to help animals.”

Paris Hilton “Miss Pigelette” Pig Purchase Angers PETA

2009 Fox Reality Channel Really Awards

Paris Hilton has gotten in trouble for her animal hoarding ways before.

Now she’s sparked bad attention again for the recent addition of a baby pig to her home.

During a recent Tweet, Paris said:

“http://twitpic.com/kuuwf – So excited for my new piglette to come home to me. I just picked out the cutest piggy from Patty at Royaldandie.com”

The pig, Paris named Miss Pigelette, is seen below.

According to TMZ, PETA has accused Paris of setting a “wretched example” by treating animals like they’re “as disposable as her friends and fiances.”

Ouch! That’s a little harsh.

We bet Paris has kept her pets longer than most of her boyfriends and fiances.

“The Chihuahuas, ferrets, and kinkajous she’s paraded through her home in the past were not accessories, and pot-bellied pigs aren’t either,” PETA added.

Meatless Mouthful: Author Discovers Inner World Of Farm Animals

The Inner World Of Farm Animals

The Inner World Of Farm Animals

“I think the complexity of the intelligence of the chickens was the most surprising to me. I was shocked to find out that they can count and use geometric principles, to name just a few of their capacities! I think the most disturbing thing is that, with scientific confirmation of how sentient, capable and aware all these animals are, it becomes even more unbearable to think about what happens to them on a daily basis on a factory farm. On a lighter note, one of the most heartwarming stories in the book is that of Debbie, a cow who fell to the ground because of her crippling arthritis. She was surrounded by 13 of her bovine friends, who mooed until help came. Sadly, Debbie had to be put to sleep. The cows then laid on her grave and mooed and cried. Then they disappeared into the forest for two days, not even coming out for their grains. The book is filled with stories like this, which show the loyalty, personalities, emotions and devotion of these animals.”

The_Cove_2009_promo_image

The Cove is set for screening in Japan, during the 22nd annual Tokyo International Film Festival from October 18-26.

The film, which portrays the annual dolphin hunt in Taiji, Japan and was originally not okayed for screening (wonder why…), but this year’s theme is Action For Earth 2009, so film officials reversed their decision with the caveat that they are not liable for any disputes arising from the screening.

The hunt for dolphins is not only cruel to animals, but to the market where dolphin meat is sold and consumed.

Dolphin meat contains some of the highest levels of mercury, 5000 more times, than allowed by Japanese law.

That’s more than enough to get you a stay home from work sick pass like Jeremy Piven did.

Since the film’s initial screening and the controversy it sparked, activity in the area where Taiji fisherman captured the dolphins has been relatively quiet.

Will the screening in Japan put even more pressure on the fisherman and buyers to stop this activity for good?

Chrissie Hynde Brookstone Frog-O-Sphere Bashing

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, September 29th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Female Musicians, Female Singers.

The Pretenders, Cat Power And Juliette Lewis At The Greek Theatre

The Pretenders‘ singer Chrissie Hynde has written a letter to Interim CEO and president of Brookstone for its Frog-O-Sphere display, where live frogs and snails are sold in the store.

“I was horrified to learn from my friends at PETA that Brookstone is selling African dwarf frogs and snails in tiny, barren boxes. Customers have reported that the animals are languishing on store shelves and that they often die slow, miserable deaths. Foot massagers and grill equipment can live quite happily in boxes; animals cannot. Brookstone should rely on sales of innovative and cruelty-free gadgets instead of profiting from animal suffering.”

“Over the years, I’ve opened my home to many animal companions—but only after careful consideration of my ability to provide them with the love and care that they need for their entire lives. It’s irresponsible, and often deadly, to purchase animals on a whim. When the novelty wears off, the animals pay the price. Most mall shoppers have no idea of the commitment required to take care of these animals…”

Leona Lewis Criticized For Not Singing At Harrods

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, September 26th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Female Singers, Fur.

2009 VH1 Divas

When Leona Lewis refused to open a sale at Harrods Department store because it sold fur, many applauded her decision to stand by her beliefs.

But not everybody thought it was best decision to turn down over a million dollars, even if it came from a store which stocked those products.

“I am outspoken, especially if it’s to do with animal welfare,” Leona told Scotland’s The Big Issue.

“I got a lot of flak for the Harrods decision. There were people who said I should have done it and given the money to charity, but that would have been such a contradiction because doing it on one hand to give on the other is not helping anything.”

Leona’s sophomore album, Echo, comes out on November 17.
