Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, July 19th, 2010 in Actresses, Animal Issues, Videos.

Jada Pinkett Smith has already hinted she’d like to be an animal activist. When she bought a boa constrictor as a pet, she regretted it, after realizing it would be caged for most of its life.

Recently Jada told People Pets she rescued a dog in Beijing. The chow-husky mix is named “Beijing Black,” which means “Little Brave” in Chinese and he adds to the family’s already rescued canine family of 2 huskies, a shepherd mix and a pit bull mix.

Rocsi Diaz BET “106 And Park” Host Says Adopt With PETA2

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, July 13th, 2010 in Animal Issues, TV Hosts.

Rocsi Diaz, host of BET’s music video countdown show, 106 and Park, invited her dog Chi Chi to co-host a special announcement with PETA2 urging the adoption of pets versus buying them in stores.

Diaz and Chi Chi are cute as buttons, but wouldn’t it be great it one day there wasn’t a need for PSAs like these? If people won’t adopt cats, dogs and other animals voluntarily, maybe law will require they rescue shelter animals instead.

Ellen DeGeneres “Tails Inc.” June 2010 And Stamps To The Rescue

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, May 24th, 2010 in Animal Issues, TV Hosts.

Ellen DeGeneres is featured on the June 2010 cover of Tails Inc.

Inside, the magazine discusses the vegan talk show host announcing the United States Postal Service (USPS) Stamps to the Rescue campaign and its creation of Animal Rescue: Adopt a Shelter Pet commemorative postage stamps on her daytime television show.

DeGeneres invited U.S. Postmaster General John E. Potter to her March show to unveil the stamps that produced a quarter of a million pre-orders a little over a month later.

“As one of the country’s most influential and high-profile animal advocates, DeGeneres’ willingness to jump in with both feet to partner on this important initiative is hardly surprising. It’s also not surprising Potter chose to focus this year’s USPS social-awareness cause on adopting shelter pets, as he’s an animal lover and enjoys spending time with his pooch at home. But he also might have been swayed toward promoting an animal-welfare issue given the popularity of USPS 2002 social-awareness Neuter or Spay stamp. A full 100 percent of all 200 million stamps were sold.”

Harrison Ford and fiancee Calista Flockhart have already welcomed an addition to their family.

Indiana Jones and his lady have adopted a few mixed breed dogs that were abandoned after their mother was hit by a car and left to fend for herself in the cold.

Troy Jackson, executive director of Northwest Animal Companions, had been given permission by the owner to nurse the dogs back to health, but something wacky happened and the owner filed grand theft charges against him.

After much media attention, including from Oprah and Ellen DeGeneres, all charges against Jackson were dropped.

Requests from animal rights activists convinced authorities not to return the dogs to the owner.

“They’ve gone from rags to riches,” Jackson said. “They’ll live a better life than you and me ever will.”

Pet Adoptathon with Cesar Millan

Cesar Millan, renowned dog expert and star of the National Geographic Channel’s Dog Whisperer, is the spokesperson for the Pet Adoptathon, an event taking place on May 1 and May 2 at more than 2,000 animal shelters around the world.

The event originally began as a North Shore Animal League program as a way to find homes for animals at its shelter.

The League began inviting other shelters to do the same and 16 years later, more than 300,000 animals have found homes through the Adoptathon.

Millan says the rescue effort is mutual and by inviting a shelter pet into their homes, humans live more fulfilling, happier lives.

“Millions of many wonderful animals end up in shelters each year, and adoption provides these animals their second chance at life. The act of adopting a dog creates balance and completeness in our lives by fulfilling the need in every human of contribution, if only for a moment. Really, who is saving who?”

The Adoptahon promotes the adoption of mixed breeds, called Mutt-i-grees by the organization, which make up the majority of pets that are euthanized each year.

Carrie Underwood has donated $10,000 dollars to the Bideawee Manhattan Animal Shelter in Manhattan, New York.

The shelter was grateful for Underwood’s generous donation, and hopes her fans follow her lead.

“We would hope that Carrie Underwood’s fans, who see that she has a dog already, would be interested in coming to shelter and getting a pet through a shelter as opposed to a pet store or a breeder” said Renee Collins, adoption center manager for Bideawee.

According to Popcrunch, Underwood’s Chihuahua named Ace is set to be the ring bearer in her upcoming wedding.

Bonnie Hunt “Bonnie Hunt Show” Promotes Pet Adoption

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, March 1st, 2010 in Actresses, Animal Issues, TV Hosts.

58th Annual ACE Eddie Awards - Arrivals

Bonnie Hunt features a pet adoption segment twice a month on her daytime talk show, the Bonnie Hunt Show.

The animals get their own video promos on Bonnie’s website, along with their background information, which makes it look very similar to an online dating service.

Maybe that’s why Hunt’s adoption feature is such a hit.

From Tails Inc.:

“It is entertaining when you see all these dogs and hear their stories when the rescue people come out and say, “We found this one at the railroad tracks, and we named her this. She’s about 2 years old, and we don’t know her story.” They try to figure out the mix. And then you just see some great family with three kids come and pick up the dog. It’s great.”

Growing up, Hunt and her mother welcomed a slew of animals into the home, even though her father was a little apprehensive about it.

“My dad would say, “We can’t do this. Not another one.” And then he would love them more than anybody. That was the whole premise of those Beethoven movies I did earlier in my career, where I played the mom who was like, “We’ll take the dog and hide it from dad.”
