Readers at Mother Nature Network nominated their favorite green chefs across the country and Dirt Candy’s Amanda Cohen is one of 40 young chefs who’s taken her passion for food and created both a menu and a restaurant that embodies sustainability.

Moby interviews with KCRW on his co-edited book Gristle, veganism and zoonotic diseases.

“Almost every big global pandemic starts with confined animal production,” he said.

A more recent example of this is swine flu–the disease used to make its way through pigs on farms before it got smarter and infected humans.

The musician also touches on the benefits of a plant based diet for athletes, stating that carbohydrates and protein are easier to use than those found in meat.

Moby’s interview starts at minute 22:14, but there are several clips during this program that are relevant to vegetarians, including a segment on school lunches, polenta and a restaurant that only serves mac and cheese.

Lisa Bloom, an attorney and legal expert who hosted her own talk show on Court TV and has served as a legal analyst for CNN and CBS news, is a lifelong vegetarian who eventually became a vegan.

Bloom thinks the answer to climate change is to adopt a vegan diet, and discusses why in this clip taken during an interview when she attended a book signing event for Gristle, a collection of essays co-edited by Moby, on the effects of factory farms on the planet.

Meat Is For Pussies by punk rocker John Joseph has already gained the attention of several notables in the vegetarian community. Serving as no-nonsense advice for getting healthy and removing the junk from your body, Joseph’s book emphasizes that the only wimpy men out there are the ones still grabbing a double-double for dinner. Moby is so into tacos and kale, he would eat the combination as his last meal on death row. In a week’s time, he made his way across the U.S. to enjoy tacos on both the east and west coast. The vegan musician shares his food adventures in Grub Street New York‘s regular feature where notables divulge every detail of what they’ve eaten in the past week.

New York city drew him to Caravan of Dreams for their seitan tacos. “They have these seitan taquitos, which are tiny little mini-tacos with seitan, pineapple, guacamole, and salsa,” Moby said. “They’re spectacular. It comes with a side of sautéed kale and garlic.”

By the middle of the week, he made his way to Real Food Daily in California to enjoy “Taco the Town,” another seitan based taco dish with black beans, spanish rice, guacamole and pico de gallo.

Treehugger posted a video from a talk given by Moby and Miyun Park, the two co-editors of the book about factory farming, Gristle, during one of their book promotion appearances.

Moby reiterated what he’s said before in interviews about how subsidies to big farms not only make it harder for people to buy healthier, organic, plant based food, but contribute to more destruction of the environment and more animals killed, as these subsidies are also used to start new farms.

Moby has previously estimated that beef would cost around $30 a pound if subsidies to the meat industry were removed.

Definitely no longer a value meal at McDonald’s, that’s for sure.

Moby credits his mother for turning him on to veganism and animal rights, as he told Vegetarian Times she tried to “sneak tofu into my food and I would be outraged.”

Moby eventually learned to love the life his mother was trying to impress on him and as we approach Mother’s Day, model and eco friendly beauty products entrepreneur Josie Maran also thanks her mother for bringing her up environmentally friendly.

“My mom is my role model for being green,” Maran said, and revealed that earlier that afternoon she had shown her own daughter how to plant produce in the garden.

Teany

Teany, the tea and vegan cafe created and previously owned by vegan rocker Moby, is rumored to be opening this week.

Village Voice stopped by to find cakes in the display cases and chairs scattered throughout the New York City restaurant.

Teany was damaged by an electrical fire last year.

Moby once remarked that Teany was so great because both meat eaters and vegans were just as excited about the offerings.
