Apple Rejects iSealClub Seal Hunt Application

Canada Raises Quota For Controversial Seal Hunt

Apple has rejected the iSealClub application, a game that lets players club seals for points, because it was deemed to have objectionable content, according to The Telegram.

Matt Smyth, the app’s designer, can’t understand the decision, citing there’s no blood in his game and there are other apps that are violent, such as “Grand Theft Auto.”

Smyth said, “They allow other apps, like ‘Trophy Hunt’ for bear and deer and whatnot. I don’t see the difference between killing a seal … and killing a deer. But Apple decides to impose their morals, that they don’t agree with the hunt.”

Could it have anything to do with the values of  Steve Jobs?

The CEO of Apple is a vegetarian who was rumored to have broke off Disney’s ties with McDonald’s years ago shortly after he took over Pixar Animation Studios. Jobs had vocally questioned fast food chains, given their consequences on health.

The Buddhist may have once again taken a stand, using his beliefs about animals to keep material depicting the Canadian Seal Hunt as a game from being available through Apple.

A phone call to Apple from The Telegram was not returned.

According to some comments on the app’s site, it doesn’t allow you to search within zip codes yet, but updates may be on the way, as a recent change was made that better narrows down your options based on proximity.

American Idol Gives Back

Carrie Underwood told US Magazine at the American Idol Gives Back show that she rarely eats out at restaurants.

“I think the hardest thing about what I do is eating [healthy] because we’re all over the place,” Underwood said.

“It’s fast food, there’s aftershow food, you get pizza, whatever,” she added. “I don’t do that. I don’t eat out ever.”

“Every once in a while I have a day off and I might go to a restaurant — but no aftershow food and I keep my fridge stocked.”

Carrie’s reluctance to go out may have a lot to do with her vegetarian diet.

Not every part of the country is as vegetarian friendly as others, especially the parts of the United States that boo her for announcing she’s veg on stage.

Still, this gal could use an iphone application like VegOut every once in awhile to navigate her way to the nearest veg friendly restaurant.

Vegetarian iPhone App By Faizal Mohammed Scans Ingredients (Video)

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, April 12th, 2010 in Food & Drink, Tech, Videos.

There’s nothing worse than digging into your favorite microwave pack of sesame noodles, only to later find out there’s fish seasoning in the dehydrated packet.

Developer Faizal Mohammed knew this pain, and created two iphone applications, one for vegetarians and one for those who eat halal.

When you take a picture of the list of ingredients, the app scans the pic and looks for unacceptable ones.

Treehugger says an iPhone 3GS is necessary to take a legible photo of the ingredients that can be read by the scanner.

As of now, only additives are included in the app, which is good, because most of those are the names we don’t quickly recognize.

The one downside is that ingredients such as “natural flavors” can’t be decoded with the app, since the source of the flavors doesn’t have to be listed.

In the future, more ingredients will be added to the database.

Don't Eat That iPhone App

An iPhone app that might interest those unfamiliar with ingredients or who want to make sure nothing new crosses the threshold of otherwise vegetarian, natural and non-carcinogenic is the “Don’t Eat That” app.

With its obvious warning in the title, the app allows you to search for over 1,500 ingredients in foods (many of which are banned outside the U.S.) you may want to avoid because of possible allergens and other toxic effects.

A neat feature of “Don’t Eat That” is that the descriptions are also helpful in discerning whether the ingredient is derived from animals, like this cochineal extract.

That pretty color from your dental rinse is from insects.

Bugs in your mouth, anyone?

For more information, visit the Don’t Eat That homepage or download at itunes.
