Sexy Soldier Sails Steve Irwin Whale Wars Boat

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, December 12th, 2008 in Reality TV.

Sexy soldier sails…say that five times and you’ll start sounding like you have sea sickness.

Jane Taylor is one of the crew members of the Steve Irwin boat on the Animal Planet TV series Whale Wars that’s trying to stop hunters from capturing and killing whales for research purposes.  She’s been chosen as one of the sexiest vegetarian soldiers in PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian Soldier Contest.

She’s served her country and is now serving her environment!

Taylor had been stationed in California, the state of Washington, and Hawaii. In September, 2008, she resigned as a Naval Officer to set sail on the Sea Shepherd Conservation boat.

There are more sexy vegetarian soldiers to gawk at, or, um, look at in admiration. Both male and female. Go have at it!

Khloe Kardashian Trying To Be Vegetarian

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, December 12th, 2008 in Fashion, Fur, Reality TV.

If you want to keep up with the Kardashians, you should be going vegetarian. Khloe Kardashian has announced she’s trying to be a vegetarian, and has already teamed up with PETA, in the ad shown here, to express her views against wearing fur. She writes on her blog:

“I am not a full vegetarian but I have not eaten red meat or pork in over 10 years. I still eat chicken and turkey but I am trying to stop completely. I am also extremely careful now not to purchase products that are tested on animals.”

“I have started with fur but I hope that over time I will become a full vegetarian. We shall see!”

Khloe stars in the reality TV show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, which portrays the lives of the children of the late Robert Kardashian, an attorney best known for his defense work with O.J. Simpson in the 90s.

Terence Gerchberg was the “veggie half” of the Amazing Race couple Terence and Sarah this past season. During a challenge, Terence, a vegetarian for 15 years, tried to eat sheep butt to further the couple in the competition. It was the most delicious meal he ever had. Ha, just kidding. It was nasty, he barfed, they fell behind and were eliminated during that episode. He agreed to talk to Vegetarian Star about his experience on the show as well as his personal experience with vegetariansim.

On the eating challenge where he had to eat sheep butt

I wish more than anything I would have said this: “I will not compromise my beliefs.” And turned around and walked out. I didn’t say that. Am I mad at myself for that? I’m mad at many things. They probably wouldn’t have even conveyed that because they definitely portrayed me as being a bit of a little whiner on the show. I’m really not that big of a complainer. Being a competitive person, for a million dollars, would you have tried to eat sheep’s butt?

I could not chew it. I was gagging. It was literally repulsive. And Sarah was like, “Eat the potatoes.” It wasn’t potatoes. It was chunks of ass. It was fat from the [sheep] ass. It was seriously the most repulsive thing I’ve ever in my entire life tried to eat. What bothered me about the whole process was in front of us, there was like a cow’s head or lamb’s head and they were peeling the meat off of the head and eating it in front of us.

And if you look at the video, I’m throwing it up outside. (Take a look at the video after the jump below.)

Were you aware during the time you were chosen or anywhere in the process before you had the eating challenge that there were different types of eating challenges? Did you ask ahead of time if you would have to eat cow testicles or something disgusting like that?

We’ve [he and Sarah] watched previous episodes, so in previous episodes there was a meat eating challenge. They knew from my application, it clearly says, she’s kosher and it clearly says that I’ve never in my life hid the fact that I’m a vegetarian. I clearly and proudly state that I’m a vegetarian at all times. I’m the vegetarian that asks, “Ok, is your veggie burger cooked on the same grill as your meat? I don’t do that. Like, is there beef stock?” I take pride in it-I know about the gelatin. Certain cheeses are vegetarian. I really am an educated vegetarian. I’m competing at a fairly competitive level (Terence runs marathons) without eating any meat. There’s so much that the world has to offer in terms of grains. Every once in awhile I do have some dairy and eggs, but as a whole I can practically be vegan. I take complete pride and it’s something that I’ve never shied away from. So they did know it. They asked, “What would you do if you had to eat meat?” I said, “You’re asking me a tough question;-I don’t want to compromise my beliefs.”

Terence Gerchberg’s not the only reality TV contestant who felt the pain of being a vegetarian forced to eat meat in an eating competition. Timmy Mallet, a contestant on I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! was eliminated from the show after he lost a challenge to fellow contestant Brian Paddick.

The challenge involved comsuming drinks containing blended kangaroo penis and testicles. Not your average margarita.

“It was an eating trial. I wasn’t expecting that. I’m a vegetarian. How could I cope?” he said, accroding to the Uk Mirror.

“Am I comfortable having to consume living creatures? The answer is no, of course I’m not comfortable. But I am a fighter and I believe you’ve got to be in it to win it.”

The Foo Fighters made a special guest appearance on Bravo’s Top Chef.

The band presented the elimination challenge to the food teams, which was to prepare a Thanksgiving feast for everybody in their crew, a total of over 60 people, some of which were vegetarian. The winning team would be invited to a concert later that night.

Team “Sexy Pants,” served the Foo Fighters and other judges vegan cornbread stuffing, which went over quite well and was preferred to the other team’s creations.

Check out lots of pictures of “Foo Fighters Thanksgiving.”

Amazing Race Terence And Sarah Get Silenced By Sheep

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, November 17th, 2008 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Reality TV.

Reality TV time has ended for the Amazing Race couple with the veggie half, Terence and Sarah. And it ended on a very sour note.

Terence, as you can recall us telling you, has been a vegetarian for 15 years. However, during last night’s aired episode, he and Sarah decided to participate in the “Fast Forward,” challenge without knowing what the “challenge” consisted of. He soon found out that challenge was to eat sheep.

“We sat down in that restaurant and everything they served me made me absolutely ill,” Terence said.

Most would suspect that if you haven’t eaten meat in years and start doing so, you might experience some problems here and there. This was true for Terence as he attempted to eat the sheep, gagging several times, and eventually giving up.

“I can run marathons, I can do triathlons, but I could not swallow that food to save my life,” Terence said to host Phil Keoghan. Interestingly enough, since Terence couldn’t complete the Fast Forward, he had to perform another non-vegetarian task-dressing up as a cow. But they were not able to overcome to delay caused by the Fast Forward competition and ultimately had to say good-bye.

Many vegetarians would not have attempted to eat the sheep, thus compromising their beliefs, even if a million dollars were at stake. Still, in the heat of the moment and coming so far in the race, some, like Terence, may have given it a try (and most likely regretted, due to both physical pain and moral guilt).

But should CBS have done more to accommodate those with restrictive eating habits? And should they have told the couples in advance that eating meat could be a requirement along the race? If someone were allergic to meat, there would probably be no hesitation about offering a meatless substitute for the challenge.

Chime in and give us your thoughts.  Was this fair game or just inconsiderate?

2008 Summer TCA Tour - Day 3

The Animal Planet television series, “Whale Wars,” premiered on November 7, 2008. If you’re looking to watch a vegan, eco-pirate show, this may for you.

The heavily Hayden Panettiere promoted show stars Captain Paul Watson, who founded the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. He and his crew on the boat named “Steve Irwin” after the late crocodile hunter, attempt to non-violently stop Japanese ships from hunting whales that are to be later used in research purposes.

The crew is fed three vegan meals every day, as was revealed in the introductory episode. No word on if every one on board is completely vegan or if the Captain just has some strict rules about what happens on his boat.

Some of the tactics the crew uses to deter the whale hunters are throwing stink bombs filled with rancid butter on the ships.

And this is not your typical peaceful protest. In one episode, Watson was allegedly shot, but was protected by his bulletproof vest.

Is this Whale Wars or Cops?

It will be interesting to see if veganism comes up in future episodes between shoot ’em up moments with the hunters.

Amazing Race Couple Has Veggie Half

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, September 24th, 2008 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Reality TV.

Image: CBS

Terence Gerchberg and Sarah Leshner are one of the 11 couples who will compete for $1 million in the CBS reality TV show, The Amazing Race, which premiers Sunday, September 28th.

According to cbs.com, the two have been a pair for almost a year and are quite the example of opposites attract. Sarah is an MBA holding financial analyst on Wall Street while Terence is a running coach who sells real estate on the side to make some extra dough. Sarah is low maintenance, while Terence is emotional.  It’s a good thing this is The Amazing Race and not Survivor as Terence wouldn’t be too found of eating roasted rats. Sarah eats meat, but keeps kosher, Terence doesn’t eat any meat at all.

The Amazing Race pairs people who already have an existing relationship and sends them around the world via various modes of transportation to hunt for clues about their next destination. It’s literally a “race” to get there before the other couple does to avoid the risk of elimination. This is done in addition to performing various tasks that are often culturally related to the country they’re visiting. This season’s show was filmed last spring and contestants traveled 30,000 miles across five continents in 23 days, making stops in cities like Cambodia and Kazakhstan.
