Some musicians get bras and panties thrown at them on stage. Michael Franti (who gave us this lovely interview months ago) would prefer to have the ladies (and the guys) shoes. Being the charming fellow he is, he gets what he wants.

In an interview with CBS’ Early Show weather anchor Dave Price (lover of vegan chocolates), Franti discusses his work with the charity Soles 4 Souls. He’s on a mission to collect 100,000 pairs of shoes at his concerts. Unfortunately, not all fans wait to donate at the bins.

“Sometimes I’ll say ‘Well, we need shoes,’ and I’ll explain to people what we’re doing and people start throwing them on stage and I start having to dive,” Franti explains.

Lance Bass PETA Interview–Adopt, Take Lessons From Bob Barker (Video)

Lance Bass PETA

Lance Bass says we should all take a lesson from Bob Barker.

“You know when I was a kid watching ‘Price Is Right,’ I would always hear Bob [Barker] say, ‘Help control the pet population: Get your dogs spayed or neutered. People are not spaying and neutering like they should be, and there’s just so many dogs that really need a loving home.”

Bass stars in one of PETA’s many ads urging animal lovers to adopt to reduce the millions euthanized in shelters every year. But adoption is just one step, as Bass points out. Spaying and neutering a pet, especially a pet that ever comes in contact with other animals or goes outdoors is another important step in solving the unwanted animal population problem. Spaying and neutering does more than lessen the number of animals euthanized in shelters each year. It also provides health benefits for the animal. More on those benefits and the interview with Bass below.

Ray Davies Holds Patents On Vegetarian Dishes

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, December 7th, 2010 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Ray Davies

English rock musician Ray Davies is best known for being a singer and songwriter for band The Kinks. Somewhere, in some hall of fame, he needs his own star for other, non-music related accomplishments. Like patenting several vegetarian dishes.

“I’m a vegetarian, although I eat fish occasionally,” he told Gibson. “I have a couple of vegetarian dishes I’ve patented. I love to surprise non-veggies – they say: ‘That was incredible,’ and then they’re totally shocked to hear that there’s no meat in it.”

Patenting the ultimate vegan mac and cheese, bean burrito or egg replacer can be a tricky task, but it can and has been done numerous times. The patents usually fall into two categories, either 1. composition of matter (e.g. a new ingredient that’s never been used to make an already existing meal) or 2. process for making the product (e.g. heating a mixture for a product when no one’s ever thought of doing it that way).

Here are a few food combination that have earned U.S Patents.

* Reduced calorie:  fat replacements (5,466,479) and sugarless bakery goods (5,804,242)
* Microwavable: Sponge cake that can rise when microwaved (6,410,074)
* Texture: Ingredient replacing egg whites to reduce toughness of batter coatings (6,288,179)

The Beach Boys

The last original member of the Beach Boys that still tours, Mike Love, is performing in Durban, South Africa in December and he hopes to take advantage of the food culture in between rehearsals of “I Was Made To Love Her.”

The pescatarian is hoping to try one of Durbin’s famous dishes–bunny chow.

“I’m well aware of Durban’s reputation,” Love said. “And yes, I sure would try one of those bunny chows, with vegetable curry or perhaps fish.”

Bunny Chow is no lettuce and carrot mix. Nor were any rabbits harmed in the making. Rather the dish, which some speculate was created to serve take out items to blacks and other colored people that weren’t allowed to eat inside restaurants during Apartheid, is the original soup in a bowl–a loaf of bread with a hole in it filled with curry. Originally, it was only served with vegetable curry, then meat reared its ugly head into an otherwise hearty and healthy dish.

If you’re missing a Visa for South Africa, here are some simple instructions for making bunny chow in your kitchen.

Chuck D

“My thing is this – everything has to be able to be done with some kind of commitment and passion, and some reason that isn’t blown out of proportion and taken for granted.”

Chuck D of Public Enemy during an interview with The Vine. Chuck eats a more sustainable diet by being a fish-eating vegetarian and he also is a human and animal rights activist.

If you follow the pescatarian diet, you should know, scientists have shown fish feel pain too. If you are still comfortable with your decision, please choose seafood wisely, eating only varieties that are not overfished and contain the least amount of unhealthy toxins like mercury.

Brian May Comforts Dying Cat Hit By Vehicle (Video)

Queen Brian May

Queen guitarist Brian May comforted a cat during its last moments on Earth.

According to The Lancaster Guardian, May was driving when he approached the cat lying in the road. He spent about a half an hour with it, stroking it until it died.

According to one source, about 5.4 million cats are hit by cars a year, which is more than the number euthanized in shelters. Pet owners can completely prevent this tragedy by simply keeping their cats–and dogs–inside. Invest in an invisible fence if your cat is the kind to enjoy fresh air.

Below is a video in which a veterinarian demonstrates ways to protect a cat that has been hit by a vehicle until it can get proper veterinary care. This is important for stabilization reasons–any movement involving the spine could result in fatal damage. The Dr. also discusses common injuries that take place during cat-vehicle collisions. Many cats turn to face the car just before they are hit, resulting in brain trauma and altered mental status.
