Moby’s Ex Chef Amanda Cohen Nominated For Faux Foie Gras

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, January 9th, 2009 in Chefs, Food & Drink.

The Gothamist

PETA has thrown down the gauntlet to celebrity chefs. Come up with a vegetarian version of  foie gras and win $10,000.

What the heck is foie gras? Contrary to its spelling, it’s certainly not Astro Turf. Foie gras isn’t fake grass and there’s nothing fake about what geese endure after being so overfed, their livers swell, producing a delicacy that even some meat eaters are hesitant about eating due to the abuse issues.

Amanda Cohen, who recently opened a vegetarian restaurant called Dirt Candy, has a dish nominated by Fork in the Road:

“The portobello mousse at Dirt Candy is rich, earthy and intense, with a silky texture reminiscent of foie gras.”

Cohen was Moby’s first chef at Teany, a vegan restaurant formerly owned by the musician.

Of course, if you think you’re a star vegetarian chef waiting to be discovered, you can submit your recipe as well.

Lake Bell’s Favorite Vegan Restaurants

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, January 9th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

Lake Bell & May Andersen Judge

Like Pamela Anderson, actress Lake Bell has her set of favorite vegan restaurants. The vegan restaurants she visits when she doesn’t want salmon hors d’oeuvres.

What?!!! C’mon, we had to say that. Don’t boo us, she’s the one who was nibbling on Mr. Fishy at that party.

One of the L.A. establishments that tops her list is Vegan Glory, which, according to Bell, “They can be naughty, a bit fast and loose with the strict vegan standards but it’s fast food and it’s excellent.”

Lake Bell enjoys a restaurant that is loose with vegan standards? You’re kidding! Maybe that’s why she claims, “They know me by name here.”

Alright, alright, no more nastiness. Here are some other favorites: Hugo restaurant makes the cut ’cause the “vegan Caeser is to die for” and Good Earth’s not too shabby either.

See what other spots Lake recommends, which don’t only include restaurants, at LA Times.

Misha Barton Ate Mostly Vegetarian In Goa

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, January 9th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

ELLE Style Awards 2006 - Arrivals

Misha Barton was doing some serious blogging while still on vacation. She sounds a little like us!

The actress wrote, after returning from her holiday stay in Goa, that she ate mostly a vegetarian diet.

The ocean there was so beautiful and warm I didn’t want to get out. I would swim all day, ate mostly a vegetarian diet and bought some beautiful things from the vendors I bargained with — jewelry, saris, you name it.

Could Misha be doing a little experimenting before crossing over all the way?

In a previous post during her vacation, she mentioned she was exploring the spiritual culture in India and taken a liking to some of the healthier practices the people did.

I must admit I used to make fun of people who were all into yoga and chai tea thinking it was another ridiculous health fad. But now I’m that person! First of all Masala Chai tea, the traditional way with milk and sugar is delicious, and this is coming from a brit who only likes my breakfast tea!

SEC Football Championship - Florida Gators v Alabama Crimson Tide

If you bleed Gatorade, there’s a chance you might be at tonight’s FedEx BCS National Championship Game of Florida against Oklahoma. Best of luck to ya!

Before the game, how about filling your belly with food from Sublime restaurant, located in Fort Lauderdale. The owner, Nanci Alexander, who also happens to be an animal rights activist, will serve up some delicious meat-free fine dining that’s perfect for some tailgate or after game grub.

Choose from tofu caviar, pizza with soy mozzarella cheese, or “Steak” sandwich made from Gardein protein substitute, among other items on the menu.

Her restaurant was on PETA’s top eight veggie establishments, so you know it’s got to be good. Plus, with celebrity visits from folks like Paul McCartney, Pamela Anderson, and Bob Barker, you know it’s star approved.

Chrissie Hynde has much to celebrate this New Year. She and her band The Pretenders have their first album out in six years, Break Up The Concrete, and are currently on tour.

Her vegan restaurant, The Vegiterranean, has been opened for over a year and doing quite well in her hometown in Akron, Ohio. It’s also been named one of the eight best vegetarian restaurants in the country by PETA.

The fantastic thing about Chrissie’s restaurant is it’s not located in a stereotypical region where you’d think veganism would thrive, like New York or L.A. But Chrissie has made it work and that’s great news to anyone living on the outskirts of the vegan food movement who thinks there’s no hope for their small or self described “backwards” town.

In fact, several Midwestern restaurants made the list, including two in Ohio and one in Chicago.

Check out the rest of the winners to see if your territory is covered. Are there any restaurants you think should have made the cut? Tell us about it!

Lake Bell In Charge Of Vegan Salmon: Silverstone Approves

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, January 8th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink, Not So Vegetarian.

Premiere Of Fox's

Holly Won’t, The Oversneer, and Simon Scowl at Deceiver would have a ball with this one.

Remember Lake Bell, the actress we recently discovered was vegan? She talked about how she was in charge of vegan sweets during the holidays with her family and she went to Baby Cheeks, Sweetie Buns, Baby Cakes bakery in NY for all her vegan goodies?

We did some research in the archives and discovered she has a fish problem, or at least she had one last year at a party for her childhood friend Lyn Devon’s fashion show.

New York Mag caught up with her and asked her why the heck she was eating a salmon hors d’oeuvre if she was a vegan.

“It’s okay, I already came out about my fish-eating-ness to my closest vegan friend, Alicia Silverstone, and she already approves,” Bell said.

Okaaaaay.

Don’t know what the heck that means. Is Alicia Silverstone the vegan confession priest to whom all vegan sinners must go through? It’s hard to imagine Silverstone saying she would approve of such behavior, given the fact that she’s a huge public vegan, both getting naked herself and egging other people on to get naked for the cause.

The last thing we need is another Gwyneth Paltrow who’s “pretty much vegetarian,” who pretty much has confessed her turkey eatingness to everyone but Silverstone. Is Lake Bell full of bellshit? Chime in let us know what you think.

Barack’s Daughter Sasha Obama Bringing Veggies To School

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, January 7th, 2009 in Children, Food & Drink, Politicians.

US President-elect Barack Obama enjoys shave ice with friends and family in Hawaii

He wanted more vegetables for the children and now it looks like his daughter will be helping to carry out his wish for the entire Washington D.C. area.

Sasha Obama, Barack’s youngest daughter, is attending Sidwell Friends School in D.C. where part of the children’s education is to teach them about helping those less fortunate.

One such program is making soup for Martha’s Table, which according to their website, is designed to “help at-risk children, youth, families and individuals in our community improve their lives by providing educational programs, food, clothing, and enrichment opportunities.”

Sasha will be bringing fresh veggies to school which will be used to make soup that will be delivered to Martha’s Table.

From the Sidwell Friends website:

Each Wednesday, children bring a vegetable from home as their contribution to the makings of a 50 lb. pot of soup. Classes take turns collecting and cutting the vegetables, which are then delivered to Martha’s Table by a parent volunteer. The children are reminded to bring their Wednesday vegetable by painting a magnetic tile to take home to place on their refrigerators.
