Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, January 19th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Models.

Christie Brinkley Helps Launch

Let’s face it, beautiful women have power.

So it’s no surprise to hear that supermodel Christie Brinkley had power over her family when she decided to turn vegetarian as a teenager.

“I became a vegetarian when I was 13 and then got my entire family to become vegetarians,” she recently told PEOPLE when asked her secret to looking gorgeous at 54.

She was unveiling her new Got Milk? ad at Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.

She also said nutrition had always been important in her life as well as working out on her total gym.

No doubt her attention to nutrition is what kept her healthy and sane during her messy divorce to ex Peter Cook.

To remake an ACDC song: “He’s got green balls. And she’s got green balls. But Al Gore’s got the greenest balls of them all.”

The Inconvenient Truth presenter will host a green inaugural ball tomorrow with locally grown food that includes vegetarian and vegan options cooked by chefs located right across the street (to reduce carbon emissions from vehicle traveling with the food).

Maroon 5, who enjoyed raw vegan chef Ani Phyo’s catering for their vegan Halloween party, will be providing the musical entertainment, along with Will.i.am.

Guests will walk on carpet made from recycled fibers, waste will be recycled and composted, and contributions will be made to Native American family farmers partaking in energy-conservation projects to offset carbon emissions.

Groups that are on the invite list include Sierra Club, Natural Resources Defense Council, Earthjustice, Vote Solar Initiative and Youth for Environmental Sanity.

Some balls are held for charity. Some for fancy dress. But the balls held for the environment are the balls that we like best.

Angela Bassett Likes Raw Vegan Choices With Artsy Twist

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, January 18th, 2009 in Actresses, Food & Drink.

Angela Bassett plays Notorius B.I.G.’s mother in Notorious, which opened this past weekend, and looks like a hot momma on any given day.

She revealed to the LA Times how she keeps this up, especially when she’s filming for the big screen.

“I love vegan choices, raw food choices, and I’ll eat whatever I have to in order to get into whatever shape I need to get into for any one particular role,” she said.

So where does she go when she doesn’t want to cook for herself?

California School of Culinary Arts in Pasadena is for cooks in training but don’t let that fool you. Basset said the food is great and she loves how the students are excited to put their “artistic twist on things.”

Presentation is just as important as taste for Bassett as she added that was a bonus for another one of her favorite restaurants at La Costa resort in Carlsbad.

“You want art in your food. I’m looking for complexity and taste. Not just “my body needs to eat,” you know?”

Find out what other spots Angela likes to frequent, for both food and entertainment.

Linda McCartney Food Range May Not Escape Economic Wrath

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, January 16th, 2009 in Business, Food & Drink.

Paul And Linda McCartney

There’s nothing sadder than being ahead of the game at halftime only to slide towards defeat during the last quarter.

The Linda McCartney food range created by Paul McCartney’s late wife was doing quite well weeks ago, but it appears that more than love is needed to prevent cutbacks from the staff.

The Fakenham Times reports:

“And there was another blow as vegetarian food producer Linda McCartney announced 17 jobs could be lost in manufacturing cutbacks. The news comes just six weeks after company bosses said soaring sales of the relaunched brand would give security for the 180-strong workforce on Holt Road.”

The Linda McCartney factory parent company, Hain Frozen Foods, had to cut back on production hours as well, even though there was a rise in the sale of its meat-free products.

Hoping for the best for the workers and their families as the companies try to weather the economic storm.

Celebrity Big Brother contestants

Many of us are pinching pennies in the recession and the contestants of Celebrity Big Brother 6  are no exception.

The group, which includes notables like La Toya Jackson and Verne Troyer, were recently faced with buying groceries on a reduced budget and were arguing over what foods should be put on the shopping list.

Ulrika Jonsson suggested talking La Toya into compromising and eating some tuna and salmon because it’s cheaper.

Troyer protests that La Toya isn’t trying to be difficult in her eating choices, but that she’s vegetarian and they shouldn’t force her to eat meat.

Apparently, she’s been doing it anyway.

Jonsson later told other house mates that “Verne was so quick to stand up for La Toya and make the point that she is a vegetarian, has a strict diet and needs her salmon,” she said.

“But, well, vegetarians aren’t supposed to eat fish in the first place, and La Toya even ate turkey mince yesterday.”

You’d think that La Toya could have the rules bent and bring in her own food in order to stick with her diet.

But as we learned with the Amazing Race, Reality TV ain’t always pretty to those who aren’t omnivores.

Paul McCartney poses for photos during an impromptu photo op in NYC

Paul McCartney was a guest on the Howard Stern show recently. After hearing “Howard Stern,” you know immediately the show was at least a little PG, as evident in the transcript over at the Examiner.

Stern told his vegan sidekick, Robin Quivers, to “show Paul her breasts.” McCartney, being the gentleman he is, immediately protested, to which Quivers responded, “I’ve been rejected by Paul McCartney.”

McCartney is in the U.S. to attend the inauguration next week and Quivers tried to smooth talk her way into coming along by reminding him of their shared interests.

“I’m a vegan, too. Take me to the inauguration. Kids love me.” Paul is only vegetarian, but close enough.

Neither breasts, nor shared diet could win over Paul, but he did share some insight on why he feels it’s okay to eat dairy, such as eggs.

When Stern asked, “Isn’t an egg a chicken abortion?” Paul replied it wasn’t and said “We don’t like to think of it like that.”

Hens abandon their eggs in nature, so that’s why it’s okay and not animal cruelty, he explained.

Time for you vegans to shout out! What do you think about Paul’s rationale? Some say that meat is okay because animals kill each other in nature. Is his argument similar?

Speak now. And if you want to give your opinion on if he should have looked at Robin’s breasts, that’s fine too.

Pregnant Carnie Wilson Gives Up Red Meat

Don Henley Honored At The 2007 MusiCares Person Of The Year - Arrivals

While being with child makes some women start eating things they normally wouldn’t, Carnie Wilson is giving up something instead-red meat.

The singer who most people associate as one third of the 90s band trio Wilson Phillips, said on The Bonnie Hunt Show, “I don’t eat red meat anymore. Now I am just a cheese freak because of the pregnancy. I can’t stop with the cheese. And bagels.”

She’s also know for her ups and down weightwise, being public about her gastric bypass surgery a decade ago and has appeared on Celebrity Fit Club.

To get healthier, she did lose 50 pounds before the pregnancy, but nowadays she’s just trying to have fun and eat healthy versus obsessive restriction.

“I feel like the word ‘diet’ is not a great word because we know that diets don’t work. I say [to daughter Lola], ‘Let’s just eat healthy. This is good for you. Let’s just eat more of the healthy stuff.’ ”

Kudos to Carnie for realizing “the healthy stuff” isn’t red meat.
