Obama Speaks On Jobs, Energy, And Climate Change

“The fact that we subsidize some of these big, agribusiness operations that are not necessarily producing healthy foods, and we discourage, or we don’t subsidize farmers who are producing fruits and vegetables and small scale farming that gets produce immediately to consumers as opposed to having it processed…The fact that we’re not doing more to ensure that healthy food is in the schools. All those things don’t make sense. It is important for us to re-examine our overall food policy.”

—-Barack Obama during a speech on the campaign trail last year.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, January 25th, 2009 in Business, Food & Drink.

Stella McCartney Store - Christmas Lights Switched On

We all know organic is better for us, especially when it comes to some fruits and vegetables, but sometimes it’s hard to do the org thing because of access or financial issues. Not to worry, even the stars who pledge to be healthy have to compromise every now and then.

“Sometimes it’s just not practical, but I do what I can. I shop at Whole Foods in the U.K.,” said Stella McCartney.

Stella has her own line of organic skin care products, CARE, which are 100% totally organic.

She’s featured on Sprig.com’s 10 Organic Diet Secret of the Stars slide show, along with militant organic momma Madonna.

Ricky Gervais Wants His Roast Without A Rump

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, January 24th, 2009 in Comedians, Food & Drink.

The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards - Press Room

British comedian Ricky Gervais is experiencing the issues many have after learning the truth of how food gets from the animal to their plate.

Lately Gervais has been struggling with the morality of meat and it has affected his diet.

He says he’s “nearly vegetarian” and doesn’t want to see any meat that looks like it used to be an animal, according to Calorielab.

Still, he gives into Christmas roast and cocktail sausages wrapped in bacon, which apparently don’t have any faces or tails on them, thus relieving his consciousness.

Seriously though, Ricky’s problem further highlights the fact that many people are dissociated from their food on many levels, from the fact that it did come from an animal to how the animal was treated before slaughter.

And maybe it’s further proof that everyone should be forced to watch the gory videos of factory farms and slaughterhouses.

They do generate discussion and thought.

Jason Mraz Checking Bags Of Powder At Airports

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, January 23rd, 2009 in Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

Stand Up 2 Cancer - Los Angeles, CA

If you frequently travel by plane, you know the rules of what you can and can’t fly the friendly skies with is pretty strict. So you have to wonder how Jason Mraz gets his bundle of powders and knives through security without a eyelash being batted.

These powders and knives are for preparing delicious raw food dishes, by the way.

Tracey Pepper, writer for the Vegetarian Times, asked that question in the Q & A section of the February 2009 issue of the magazine:

Q: You’re on the road for months at a time. How do you stick to your diet while on tour?

A: I travel with a very large knife and a Vita-Mix 4500 blender. I love my Vita-Mix blender.

Q: How do you get the knife through security?

A: Oh, I check it. I also check a special flight case that holds all my [raw food] powders and mixtures.

Jason says he travels with “plenty of nuts.”

No, he’s not talking about his band and crew.

Usually only security knows what’s in that mysterious case he packs. But if you want to find out, visit the Vegetarian Times for the entire interview.

Don’t forget to look at the picture of the crazy sounding chocolate avocado treat Jason concocted.

Ted Allen’s Cheftestant Summer “Chopped” In Octopus Debut

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, January 20th, 2009 in Chefs, Food & Drink, Videos.

The Launch Of The Turbochef Speedcook Oven

There’s a new cooking show on the Food Network hosted by Top Chef judge Ted Allen and every week some one’s going to get chopped.

Not literally, of course, it’s not a medieval cooking show.

On Chopped, contestants, or “cheftestants” cook an appetizer, main course, and dessert. They have 30 minutes to cook each course and must also use “mystery ingredients” in the courses. The chef who can’t reveal the mystery dish to be a delicious meal at the end of the show is “chopped” and sent home.

On the January 13th debut, Chef Summer was looking to show her vegetarian and vegan cooking skills. Instead, she got screwed (or shall we say strangled) by baby octopus.

Boiling octopus meat was not the most pleasant cooking experience for Summer and it may have been why she was the first contestant to be “chopped.”

Personally, we think it should have been Katie, a 21-year-old pastry chef, who thought green onions were “strange” and didn’t know what the heck to do with them.

Christie Brinkley’s Got Milk Video And Interview

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, January 19th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Models, Videos.

Earlier today, we told you Christie recently unveiled her new “Got Milk?” ad at the Sundance Film Festival recently.

Here’s a video of her shooting for the ad, along with an interview with the vegetarian supermodel. When she’s having problems getting her kids to eat healthy, she likes to rename the foods to something fun. We’re sure she’s not using any names Stephen Colbert uses, though.

Speaking of milk, you vegans might have something to say about this.

Milk comes with controversy, both for animal rights and health reasons. Will there be a time when a Got Soy Milk? campaign gets going? Or Rice milk. Or almond milk. Who would you like to see wear a non-dairy milk mustache?

Obama Admits To Steak, But Still Suggests More Vegetables

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, January 19th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Politicians, Videos.

We’ve been talking about this Veggies For The Children moment for months! Since we’re so close to inducting the man featured on this video named Barack Obama, we thought we’d let you watch it.

Obama says that in the interest of full disclosure, he has to admit he likes a steak every once in awhile. And he’s not going to lie about barbecue either. But he realizes the importance of how a healthier diet, which includes more plant based items, can reduce rates of obesity related diseases like diabetes. He adds that it takes more grain to produce a pound of beef versus just eating the grain.

What a wise man we’ve elected!
