Alexis Stewart Kicks Off Farm Forward Launch Party With Vegan Cookies

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, February 6th, 2009 in Food & Drink, Radio Hosts.

Petas Fashion Week Bash At Stella McCartney

Alexis Stewart, the vegetarian daughter of Martha Stewart and co-host of Whatever Radio, has been active in animal rights and vegetarianism before. Now she’s at it again, hosting the Farm Forward Launch party in her own home and feeding guest with vegan treats.

Farm Forward is an organization that wishes to move away from the practice of factory farming and toward smaller family owned farms that care for the animals better, and encourages more sustainable agricultural practices.

The launch party attendees  included Alexis and her mother Martha, as well as novelist Jonathan Safran Foer, who is a Farm Forward Board Member. Foer joked that he has tried to go vegetarian several times and coining an old phrase Mark Twain used about smoking, he said “it’s easy to go vegetarian, I’ve done it dozens of times.”

Although members of it’s Executive staff are vegan, Farm Forward is aiming to create better lives for the animals that will be eventually slaughtered, according to Aaron Gross, one executive staff member.

Vegan hors d’oeuvres were served and Alexis baked her very own vegan cookies.

You can view clips from the Farm Forward Launch party as well as learn more about Farm Forward.

But is Minnie Mouse cage-free?

Disney has come up with its own brand of eggs. All your favorite cartoons from classic Mickey to Cars characters that will ultimately be indiscernible once crushed against the side of the stove top before frying appear on the eggs that are hormone and anti-biotic free.

Good to know at least Disney is using products from chickens who weren’t on steroids, but it’s not sure whether they’re from cage free animals. Or if the dyes contain any animal derivatives.

Hopefully, they were free-range and went on all the magic carpet rides with Aladdin they desired.

The cute marketing idea that probably comes with an extra price tag Ebeneezer Scrooge wouldn’t be interested in will have children dragging their parents to the dairy section of the grocery store, so let’s hope Minnie’s products are as egg-thical as they possibly can be.

Where Would Gabe Saporta Go? Citysearch Tells All

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, February 2nd, 2009 in Business, Food & Drink, Male Singers, Restaurants.

Jennifer Lopez Celebrates

Citysearch.com is the place to go to find out where all the restaurants, clubs, and hot business you’ll need in whatever city you’re dwelling in or passing through. It never hurts to have a personal recommendation, though, and Cobra Starship hottie Gabe Saporta has given his top picks.

The vegetarian singer who recently posed with a bunny in an anti-fur ad admits he can only eat a couple of meals at the restaurant he’s an investor of, Employees Only, a New York city establishment fashioned after a Prohibition-era speakeasy, where all you see is a psychic you must walk past before approaching a door labeled “Employees Only,” that leads to the food.

He can, however, eat more than a couple of dishes at Red Bamboo in NY.

“I wouldn’t be doing myself justice if I omitted a vegetarian spot from my list (after all, there are only two dishes I can eat at my own restaurant). Veggie food is usually bland and annoyingly health-conscious. Red Bamboo, however, serves veggie ‘soul-food.’ Seriously. Creole soul chicken, Cajun fried shrimp and barbecue buffalo wings–all meatless! Even non-vegetarians will love this food.”

Gabe loves both LA and NY spots, so visit his City Search list to learn the WWGG-Where Would Gabe Go?.

Television news journalist Jane Velez-Mitchell invited Native Foods Chef Tanya Petrovna over to her place for an awesome veg dinner and the whole event was filmed by SupremeMasterTV.

Jane has featured animal issues on her television segments such as Issues With Jane Velez Mitchell on CNN or Celebrity Justice and is also a vegan.

Jane and Tanya start off the cooking demonstration by discussing the differences between silken and Chinese style tofu. Then, it’s over to the stove top. To borrow a Rachael Ray phrase, using a little EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) in the pan, Jane brings to attention that it’s organic.

The ladies immediately break out into the Don’t Panic, It’s Organic slogan.

Jane takes the time to educate how meat production is the #1 cause of global warming. Take a look and get some ideas for dinner this weekend.

Prince Fielder’s Veggie Recipe Recommendations

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, January 29th, 2009 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Food & Drink, Recipes.

MLB: Phillies vs Brewers OCT 5

When Milwaukee Brewers Prince Fielder went vegetarian last year, the media swarmed him with interview questions about his diet so much, he jokingly told Yahoo Sports, theirs was the last veggie related interview he was doing.

Luckily he agreed, so after finding some old food voyeurism for you, we thought you’d might like to listen to his opinions on a few recipes. What do you think? Could food critic be in the future after retirement from a professional sports career?

He gave input on dishes like Pesto Pasta Toss, Tandoori Paneer Tikka, and Egyptian Koshari. Here’s what he thought of Roasted Ratatouille with Basil Aioli:

“I’ve seen the movie, but I’ve never ate it. I’ve always wondered what it was. I’d probably try it, although I’m not sure about the eggplant … I don’t like eggplant, it gets to me. I like the taste, but then I get like that saliva throw-up aftertaste in my mouth, you know what I’m talking about? Eggplant is good for you though, so I’ll put that as a maybe. It depends how I’m feeling.”

Grab the recipes and read what Prince thinks of other dishes.

Rob Sedgwick Running Vegan Ice Cream Shop In New York

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, January 29th, 2009 in Actors, Business, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Kyra Sedgwick & Kevin Bacon Visit Stogo Ice Cream Shop

Rob Sedgwick (“Law and Order”, “30 Rock”), actor and brother to actress Kyra Sedgwick, has opened a vegan ice cream parlor, Stogo, in New York City with business partner Steve Horn.

Sedgwick is not a vegan. He’s not even a vegetarian and The New York Observer describes him as a “steak ’n’ eggs, cholesterol-till-you-die man.”

Still, he recognizes the popularity of non dairy products.

“It’s a great product,” he said. “There’s nothing out there like it and we’re already doing really well.”

Sis Kyra is quite happy for her brother, as she was reported to have said, “When Rob first told me about it, I thought it was a fantastic idea. My friend is vegan, and I know that vegan is quite the thing these days.” She also added that if someone had told her five years ago that Rob would open a vegan ice cream shop, she would have told them they were ” totally insane.”

Some have criticized non vegetarians for taking advantage of the market and going into the business purely to make a profit. But on the other hand, the fact that these non vegs want to do a vegan business says a lot in the world where the dollar bill rules. Vegans and vegetarians make up a strong niche market that doesn’t show signs of weakening.

And it will never hurt Rob to gobble down some of his product every now and then to offset his steak and eggs footprint.
