American Idol runner up Crystal Bowersox married her musician boyfriend Brian Walker in an environmentally friendly ceremony this past weekend.

Bowersox’s dress was a hemp and cotton blend designed by Vermont designer Tara Lynn and featured macrame, seashell and bead detailing. Lynn’s studios are powered by solar energy. Lynn’s custom hemp wedding gowns start at around $1,500, and a collection of pre-determined designs ranging in size 2-14 are a more cost effective $600.

The reception was catered by a very vegan friendly bakery in Chicago, Bleeding Heart Bakery.

“I won’t have meat all over my body… I love Gaga and her music, she is so talented but I find that… Actually I think it was gross! I don’t even like walking past a meat counter, so it’s not my sort of dress.”

Leona Lewis, to X Magazine, about Lady Gaga’s fashion sense. Walking past the meat counter may not only be a psychologically disturbing experience for a vegetarian, but a smelly one too. Rotten flesh and potentially expired meat stinks, as some customers who complained to the health department of Atlanta about smells of “dried blood” and “stinking” smells at the Super Giant grocery store’s meat department learned. The health department had received previous complaints and had cited the store, where the manager says he sells meat at a reduced price as it nears the expiration date, for safety issues.

Vegetarian Star’s take: That meat “expired” when the animal’s heart stopped beating. It’s all a health hazard!

Nellie McKay has an extensive interview with Broadway World where she spills her heart on issues like animal rights and global warming, vegan food, favorite celebrities and that never going away topic of Lady Gaga‘s meat dress.

A song on her latest CD, Home Sweet Mobile Home, titled “Unknown Reggae,” is about animals being consumed for meat.

“For animal rights, it would be “Unknown Reggae” on the new record. It is about the meat, in particular. But, animal products – including dairy and eggs, although I know it is difficult to get off of them – that’s the quickest way to end global warming. It really has a terrible impact on the earth, eating higher up on the food chain like that. If we went back to the basics of vegetables, legumes, grains – the things closer to the earth – it’s a lot better for the earth and for other people. We can feed more people, we can feed the starving people.”

In response to criticism from animal rights activists for wearing a meat bikini and meat dress, Lady Gaga has threatened to wear tofu to make the vegetarians mad. Or so she thinks it will.

During a performance in Philadelphia, Gaga said, “What’s everyone’s big problem with my meat dress?”

“Haven’t they seen me wear leather? Next time, I’ll wear a tofu dress and the soy milk police will come after me.”

Actually the soy milk police will probably give Gaga a key to the city if she wears soy clothing, given the fact it’s cruelty-free and eco-friendly.

"The Tofu Tollbooth"

"The Tofu Tollbooth"

Dar Williams is a singer-songwriter who collaborated with Elizabeth Zipern to create a one stop book filled with dining suggestions for the vegetarian traveler, The Tofu Tollbooth. The concept is great, plus the book stays true to being environmentally friendly as it’s printed with soy ink on recyclable paper.

“It’s a directory of natural food stores,” Williams told Windy City Times. “So, that’s the link; because I’m a traveler. And, actually, I’m a terrible cook. I mean, a really bad cook. So, it would be kind of funny if people ( laughs ) thought it was a cookbook. They probably imagine me in an Indian print skirt over a pot of lentils. I am so the grab-and-go kind of bad eater.”

Vegan hater Anthony Bourdain once said it was rude to eat vegetarian while traveling, but the British gals Fearne Cotton and Alexandra Burke are willing to forgo manners by refusing to eat animals given to them by locals in Peru.

The two stars have laced up their hiking boots to walk along the country’s Inca trail to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. The trail is one of the most famous in the world, spanning 26 miles, passing through mountains, forests, jungles and ending at Machu Picchu, the “lost city of the Incas.”

A local mayor presented the two with guinea pigs and then invited them to the event where the animals would be skinned and roasted and eaten.
