Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, December 13th, 2010 in Environment-Eco-Green, Fashion, Videos.

With the cold season just hitting some of us, it’s still not too late to grab a few winter-wear items. Vegan designer and founder of Vaute Coture Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart has an interview in the Huffington Post where she gives alternatives to staying warm without using wool.

“It depends on the utility & look you’re aiming for, but if you’re going for the look but don’t need the warmth, cotton moleskin is a great option,” Hilgart said. “If you need warmth (as I always did in Chicago), high tech fabrics are needed– Polartec is an excellent one that includes fabrics that are all recyclable, and often recycled.”

Natalie Portman Makes Christian Dior Give Her Non-Leather Shoes

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, December 10th, 2010 in Actresses, Environment-Eco-Green, Fashion.

You know you’ve got power when a major fashion label asks you to represent them, then remakes its fashion animal-friendly just so you can wear them.

That’s what Natalie Portman told WWD Chrisitan Dior has done with all its leather shoes it wants her to model.

“One of the things that’s been so nice is that Dior made all of the shoes for me with no animals and no leather or anything, because I don’t wear any leather…They re-made all my shoes so I can wear Dior shoes without taking lives.”

Leather just isn’t an animal issue, it’s also an environmental one. A 2009 Greenpeace report revealed several top shoe brands like Nike, Adidas and Reebok and their demands for leather may have played a role in the supporting cattle ranchers that were illegally slaughtering in the Amazon and contributing to the deforestation there.

Some musicians get bras and panties thrown at them on stage. Michael Franti (who gave us this lovely interview months ago) would prefer to have the ladies (and the guys) shoes. Being the charming fellow he is, he gets what he wants.

In an interview with CBS’ Early Show weather anchor Dave Price (lover of vegan chocolates), Franti discusses his work with the charity Soles 4 Souls. He’s on a mission to collect 100,000 pairs of shoes at his concerts. Unfortunately, not all fans wait to donate at the bins.

“Sometimes I’ll say ‘Well, we need shoes,’ and I’ll explain to people what we’re doing and people start throwing them on stage and I start having to dive,” Franti explains.

Donna Karan‘s Facebook fan page was taken over by a few animal rights activists yesterday, who logged into their accounts, changed their icons to a big, bold, black letter corresponding to a derogatory statement by the designer and wrote on her wall.

The protest was staged to draw attention to the designer’s decision to use rabbit fur in some of her collections, especially since she has promised to stop using fur in the past.

Glee may have sustainable eating, veg-friendly actresses like Lea Michele and Jenna Ushkowitz in the cast, but the show could do a little better when it comes to greening the set. At least a recent episode featuring Gwyneth Paltrow as the substitute glee club leader in “The Substitute” could have.

In a behind the scenes clip, Zach Woodlee, co-producer/choreographer of the show estimates they went through 300 umbrellas or so to film a scene putting a modern twist on “Singing In The Rain” by adding some Rihanna lyrics to it. This was because the umbrellas kept breaking during different takes.

For the rest of the season, the cast is ordered to only buy eco-friendly umbrellas, made from things like recycled aluminum and steel, bamboo handles and 100% PET bottles like the Tot eco’Brella.
