WNBA player Candace Parker put the basketball down for a moment to let everyone know wearing animals for fur should never be part of the game.

The MVP and Rookie of the year brought along her rescue dog Fendi, who steals just as much of the camera as Candace does.

“I feel very passionate about the fur campaign for PETA,” Candace says in the video below. “I feel like it’s very cruel-what they do to animals. I love my dog and couldn’t imagine anybody harming her.”

The No-Limit Texas Hold 'Em World Championship Poker Tournament Round 6

Remember that million dollar challenge Phil Ivey took from Tom Dwan?

You know, the one where Ivey wouldn’t eat “anything that moves” for a year?

According to Cake Poker, Danish poker magazine Ace interviewd Dwan for next month’s issue and revealed a plate of chicken Ivey encountered while having dinner with friends took the poker player down.

That’s pretty pathetic considering the chicken was already dead.

Although Ivey held out for three weeks, “He couldn’t handle it,” Dwan told Ace. “He realized he couldn’t keep it up for a full year.”

NBA: Phoenix Suns at Los Angeles Clippers

Amar’e Stoudemire is on a break from practicing with the Phoenix Suns and says he’s using the time off to go on a 4 day vegan fast.

“With my four days off, I’m really taking time off to purify my body, and get my body in top shape for these last 16-17 games. So right now, I’m on a vegan fast.”

Although he may opt of out his contract and become a free agent, he hints that he’ll stay in Arizona if the team can “meet his number.”

His hard work and dedication to putting the best in his body has earned him 22.1 points and 8.7 rebounds per game this season.

Is this why AZ Central calls him a “predator fueled by vegetables?”

Michael Vick Ed Block Courage Award Ceremony Sparks Protests

NFL: Super Bowl XLIV-Super Bowl Breakfast

Michael Vick was recently awarded the Ed Block courage award for his “sportsmanship” and “courage,” but not everyone who attended the event was supportive.

Several people gathered outside the facility, holding signs that read “No awards for dog killers” and “Cowards abuse animals.”

Each year several players receive the award if they are chosen to be “role models” that “exemplify commitments to the principles of sportsmanship and courage.”

One protester, according to the Baltimore Sun, said, “I find it appalling to give this to someone that has gotten enjoyment from hurting dogs,” she said. “What is he courageous about?”

A spokesman for the foundation awarding Vick, Paul Mittermeier said, “People have the right to voice their opinion.”

Vick has served time in jail for his involvement with dog fighting and has partnered with the Humane Society to discourage dog fighting in communities, especially among youth.

Is it time for activists to let go and focus on other campaigns?

Or is their constant presence in the midst of Vick’s comeback needed as a painful reminder that society should choose better role models.

Phil Ivey might be requesting black bean burgers during his next poker tournament.

Ivey accepted a challenge from Tom Dwan not to eat any meat or fish for an entire year in exchange for a million dollars.

“I’m going to become a vegetarian for a year for a million dollars,” Ivey told High Stakes Poker cohost, Kara Scott. “I was thinking about doing it for a while, so this is kind of like an added incentive.”

Another source says Ivey tried to ask for $2 million, but eventually settled on one.

Bleacherreport has picked their top players for the 2010 Fantasy Baseball predictions and Milwaukee Brewer’s player Prince Fielder is listed as #4 on their list.

“Fielder is the thickest vegetarian I have ever seen, but fantasy owners hope he keeps eating the same tomatoes and cucumbers this year that he did in 2009 when he scorched pitchers for 46 homers and 141 RBI.”

Fielder puts more than tomatoes and cucumbers in his meat free body, as he’s a big fan of pasta and Indian food.

When in Vegas, world renown poker player Annie Duke likes to patronize a few of her favorite restaurants in and around the casinos.

Annie indicated to Forbes that the healthiest restaurants aren’t in the casinos.

Most of her recommendations in the casinos were designed for the pescatarian, but one establishment in particular sounds like the perfect place for a vegetarian who loves to pull the slot machines.

“There is a great Indian restaurant called Mint, which has good vegan options,” Annie said.

The menu at Mint Indian Bistro contains many of the items you’d normally find at an Indian buffet like samosas and naan, along with a note under each item indicating if the meal is vegetarian or vegan friendly.

Suddenly Sin City isn’t so sinful anymore.

Brendan Brazier Makes Vegan Work For An Athlete

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, March 4th, 2010 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Food & Drink.

brendan_brazier1

Triathlete, author and food entrepreneur Brendan Brazier has been a vegan since the age of 15.

Although his first attempts to follow the diet didn’t work out (too many refined carbohydrates), he eventually found a way to eat to sustain energy without meat and dairy products.

A few highlights from hlifemedia on how he did it.

On his typical salad:
“Different types of lettuce, kale, sometimes a bit of nutritional yeast, different types of seaweed like dulse, a good dressing made up of apple cider vinegar and Vega oil. Also, usually avocado, different sprouted things, carrots, beets, sometimes cucumber.”

How he gets his protein:
“I think quality is way more important than quantity. I’m 165 lbs, so I should, according to a conventional sports-nutrition book, eat about 165 grams of protein a day – and I don’t eat half that. The protein I get is from leafy greens, which is about 45% protein, pretty high, and hemp, a natural source of protein, as well as lentils, legumes, beans, peas, so it’s about quality. I get probably about 70 grams a day.”

On how to put coconut oil to use:
“Coconut oil has medium-chain triglycerides. So it’s a type of fat and it acts more like a carbohydrate than a fat, and it goes to your liver, gives you energy straight away. I often put coconut oil on dates and have that right before a workout – it’s just quick, simple energy. I use it as part of some of my recipes too in Thrive. It’s in Vega Sport, too, in powder form.”
