Premiere Of HBO's Magic & Bird: A Courtship Of Rivals - Arrivals

Rory Freedman and John Salley are headlining the Michigan VegFest, a taste fest and expo hosted by VegMichigan, folks who were no doubt proud of their governor’s latest initiative to officially invite residents to participate in Meat Out Day.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday, April 18 at Ferndale High School and will feature food from local restaurants, cooking and raw food demonstrations, prizes and more.

Former Piston and TV personality Salley is back by demand after his appearance last year drew a record breaking 2,000 fans, according to the Daily Tribune.

Combining Salley’s presence with Freedman, who will likely draw a crowd who follow her based on her best selling book, Skinny Bitch, let’s hope this year’s fest is the biggest!

Jimmy Choo for H&M Launch Party

Gabby Reece was invited to help with The Teaching Garden by her friend and wife of Tobey Maguire, Jennifer Meyer.

The Teaching Garden teaches students to grow their own produce while emphasizing math and science skills.

The goal is to get 1,000 Teaching Garden programs in schools, but parents can start instructing at home, something Reece is already doing.

“My kids get to live in Hawaii and California,” Reece told Celebrity Baby Scoop.

“They play out in the dirt all the time. One of their favorite things to do each morning when we are in Hawaii is to pick fruit from the trees: lemons, avocados and papayas. My 2 year old likes lettuce and my 6 year old, well it’s a constant negotiation. Broccoli seems to be the winner so far.”

Of course, it’s great when the students can teach mom and dad a thing or two about planting, cultivating and harvesting in the home.

“Another important message is that the learning goes from the kids back to the parents. The children can teach their parents what they have learned about nutrition and fitness and hopefully have an impact.”

Prince Fielder Power Contributes To Perfect Baseball Player

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, April 3rd, 2010 in Athletes-Games-Sports.

All Star Game

What does it take to genetically engineer the perfect baseball player?

Bleacher Report attempted to reconstruct the ideal player using several athletes selling points.

Take Ken Griffy’s Jr.’s swing.

Add Carl Crawford’s speed.

Don’t forget Prince Fielder‘s power, maintained by not a ounce of animal flesh.

“Prince Fielder is the biggest, most powerful vegetarian I have ever laid eyes on. For his career he averages a homer every 14.8 at bats. At the age of 23 he was the youngest player in baseball history to ever hit 50 home runs in a season. Bottom line: This dude is powerful.”

Fielder  has his wife to thank for turning him vegetarian, after she picked up a copy of best selling book Skinny Bitch for homework.

Amanda Beard Appears At Lagasse's Stadium

Amanda Beard, gold medal Olympic swimmer who posed in a very provocative PETA ad against fur, is once again taking on the activist role.

She, along with Olympic soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo and gymnast Nastia Liukin have written to members of Congress, asking them to pass the Healthy School Meals Act of 2010, H.R. 4870.

“I work with young swimmers around the nation to help them overcome obstacles and set high goals,” writes Beard, 2008 co-captain of the U.S. women’s Olympic swimming team and winner of seven Olympic medals.

“But these young athletes face one tough challenge no young person should have to struggle against—the meals they’re served at school are often swimming in fat and cholesterol.”

Beard’s entire letter may be read here.

The Healthy School Meals Act of 2010 was introduced in March by Rep. Jared Polis of Colorado and aims to curb childhood obesity and is supported by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

The Act would introduce healthier items, which include regular vegetarian options, in school districts around the country.

Prince Fielder‘s success at the ballpark is so sought after, the Brewers are willing to do anything they can to retain him, including giving him a salary increase at the expense of the residents in Wisconsin, according to OnMilwaukee.

A vegetarian tax is being proposed, with a 5% charge on such items.

But Republican representative Scott Newcomer is certain the pinch will hardly be felt by those that eat the food.

“These vegetarians are wired a little differently. Most of them live on the East Side and they wear funky T-shirts and beat up old sandals, but you know they have money.”

“You have to be affluent to be a vegetarian. They pay extra for organic produce and free-range bean curd. I don’t even think they’ll notice the extra charge.”

With Fielder’s success on the field, you’d think more people would be encouraging vegetarianism as they see not only is the diet tasty, but can physically support the endeavors of a major league baseball player.

But some people are apparently worried about their cows.

Jeffrey Mursau, a Republican from Crivitz, said, “This is a no-brainer for me, given that there are a lot of cattle and dairy farms in my district,” he said. “People up north don’t trust anyone who doesn’t eat meat. And frankly, I find soy stupid.”

“I think this tax is a great idea because real Brewers fans eat bratwurst. They don’t want expensive tofu dogs that taste like cardboard.”

One final April Fool’s story to add to the day’s mix.

Hornets vs Wizards

The Hornets’ George Shinn sat down for dinner at a famous steakhouse, Dickie Brennan’s Steakhouse in the French quarter and ate nothing but meat free items–a stuffed bell pepper, mushrooms and a salad medley with sliced apples.

Shinn set an example for a few Hornets fans who won the opportunity to have lunch with the basketball star.

Shinn embarked on a meatless diet on the advice of his wife, Denise, who insisted after he received a diagnosis of prostate cancer.

It’s been 11 weeks since the surgery to remove the cancerous prostate at Johns Hopkins Medical Institute and Shinn couldn’t feel better.

Is it luck that he found something delicious to eat at a steakhouse of all places?

Maybe it’s the result of giving the customer what he wants.

Shinn said that if a restaurant doesn’t adapt to his lifestyle, then, “I don’t go there.”

Spoken like a true superstar!

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Anthony Parker took 21 fourth graders on a tour of a Whole Foods Market recently, teaching them the importance of good nutrition.

After the tour, Parker made vegetarian wraps with the students consisting of hummus, arugula, red peppers and carrots.

The students were randomly selected to spend the day with Parker as part of the Cavaliers’ Fit as a Pro program with Medical Mutual.

The program is designed to encourage physical fitness and good eating habits in northeast Ohio elementary students.

“As athletes, we have to eat healthy,” Parker said. “It’s important that it becomes a lifestyle, not a diet.”

“Whole Foods Market is pleased to join forces with the Cleveland Cavaliers to accomplish our 7th Core Value: Promoting the health of our stakeholders through healthy eating education,” said Whole Foods Marketing Specialist /Community Liaison Jared Earley. “Through a store tour, cooking demonstration and other interactive activities, students learned the fundamentals of nutritious and delicious healthy eating and discovered that ‘Health Starts Here’ at Whole Foods Market Cedar Center.”
