Paul McCartney Signs Petition To Ban Trading Of Seal Goods

Natural Resources Defense Council 11th Annual Forces For Nature Benefit
Paul McCartney is the latest celebrity to add his name the growing list on the petition urging members of European Parliament to make the trading of goods made from seals illegal.

“The fate of millions of seal pups is in the hands of elected members of the European Parliament,” McCartney said in a statement.

“In the next few weeks they will have a historic opportunity to stop the cruel trade in seal products throughout the European Union.”

Voting on the complete ban takes place next week. Such a ban would deter hunters from clubbing seals, wishing to gain profits from their coats and meat.

Anoop Desai Drafted For Animal Safe Sex Education By PETA

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, April 24th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Male Singers.

American Idol Top 13 Party

Anoop Desai walked the plank on American Idol this week because he didn’t receive enough votes.

But just because he didn’t win American Idol, doesn’t mean he’s not being drafted by companies to be a spokesperson.

PETA India thinks Anoop would be perfect to front a campaign on getting pets spayed and neutered.

The group is  asking him to appear in a video supporting its Animal Birth Control (ABC) campaign to “implement humane methods of controlling companion animal populations in slums” in India.

Said N G Jayasimha, campaign manager of PETA India, to IANS:

“Anoop Desai is a huge hit in India because of being an Indian. He is an inspiration. There are sentiments of Indians associated with him and we want him to join the cause like previous ‘American Idol’ Vanessa Olivarez, Kellie Pickler and Ruben Studdard as well as judge Simon Cowell in using his celebrity status to help PETA help animals.”

“We want him to speak up for the dogs on the streets, as they really suffer a lot and need a voice. Though he is now out of the show, but he still has a huge appeal and fan following and we are hoping to ride on that,” he added.

Although we were hoping Anoop would follow his immigrant parents’ vegetarian diet, being an advocate for animals will keep him from being eliminated with our votes.

Drivers going down West Hollywood Blvd. will have to hang on tight to the wheel.

The Hills’ Audrina Patridge is the latest celebrity to star in PETA’s Angels For Animals ad that was unveiled there recently.

During the photoshoot, Patridge told PETA, “I wanted to get involved with PETA because I’ve always been passionate about animals, and I think this is a great way to make people and all my fans aware of all the animals that need a home. And a lot of people go to pet stores and breeders to buy their animals, but you should adopt, so go to an animal shelter and rescue a dog.”

So fitting with the ad slogan that reads, “Be An Angel For Animals. Always adopt. Never buy. Buying animals means killing animals.”

Audrina’s friend, Speedy Gonzalez, and the other shelter animals will thank you.

“People say I manipulate the media. Well, duh. We live in a media culture so why on earth wouldn’t I? What we do is provide the media with the kind of stories they can’t resist, even if they really try, and this is how we bring attention to what’s happening to the whales, the seals, the sharks and the other marine conservation campaigns we’re involved in. The oceans are dying in our lifetime and it’s not for want of laws and regulations. The problem is enforcement. Governments are not enforcing the laws, so we have to.”

Rush Limbaugh Humane Society PSA Professes Love For Cat Punkin

Premeire Of HBO's "Bernard and Doris" - Arrivals
When you think of animal rights, the conservative right isn’t the first group that comes to mind.

Rush Limbaugh (yes, that’s not a typo) has recorded a PSA for the Humane Society of the United States.

After the initial shock is over that conservative Rush would be involved with what some of his followers would call an “extreme left group,” here’s something else for you digest: Rush loves his little Punkin!

“When you think of law enforcement and animals, police dogs come to mind,” Rush says. “But law enforcement has another ally in the animal realm and that’s the Humane Society of the United States.”

“I have a cat. That little cat is a treasure to me-Punkin. If anybody harmed Punkin, they would be punished by me.”

Go, Rush. Get em’!

The Humane Society issued a statement saying, “The animal protection movement should never confine itself to the Left or the Right in American politics. Opposition to cruelty and the embrace of the human-animal bond are universal values, and people of every background and point of view should find common purpose with the work and programs of The Humane Society of the United States and its affiliates.”

Yes, we are coming together after all. Listen to Rush’s PSA below.

Iggy Pop Wants Animals Out Of Circus: Praises U of M Officials

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, April 16th, 2009 in Actors, Animal Issues, Male Singers.

V Festival 2007 - Day 2

Iggy Pop might act like an animal on stage, but he knows there’s no room for them in the circus.

Iggy recently wrote a letter to the University of Michigan in support of their decision to ban the circus from campus after officials there learned of the horrors the animals often endure.

Who knew hardcore rocker Iggy had such a soft spot? An excerpt from the letter:

As a Michigan native, I was thrilled when my friends at PETA told me about the Michigan State Board of Trustees’ compassionate decision to ban animal circuses from campus in 2009. I hope that you will consider making this a permanent policy.

As students who are concerned with animal welfare have told you, performing animals are deprived of everything that is natural to them, including the ability to roam, forage, and form families and friendships. Circus trainers beat, shock, and whip animals such as tigers, bears, and animals to make them perform tricks that are confusing and meaningless to them.

Read the rest of Iggy’s letter to the University of Michigan.
