Tobey Maguire “Brothers” Role Meant Eating Less Vegan

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, November 29th, 2009 in Actors, Food & Drink.

The Cinema Society Screening Of "Brothers" - Arrivals

This Friday, vegan Natalie Portman and almost vegan Tobey Maguire will star alongside each other in Brothers, a story about a woman who runs to the arms of her husband’s brother after she thinks he’s killed in Afghanistan.

Tobey, who plays Capt. Sam Cahill, had to prepare for the role by both learning what Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is from veterans and slimming down 25 pounds to look like an emaciated prisoner of war.

Director Jim Sheridan joked to sfgate.com that Maguire didn’t have any problem “dieting” for the role because, “He is a vegan, so as far as I am concerned he doesn’t eat anyway.”

Huh?

Sheridan must believe the old myth that vegans munch on granola and drink unsweetened papaya juice all day.

Tell that to the contestants and past winners of the Veggie Hot Dog Eating Contest, who put down approximately 1500 veg hot dogs in the name of pure indulgence.

The contest, created by iLoveMikeLitt, offers prizes to individuals and teams that can eat the most vegetarian hot dogs in 12 minutes.

As one competitor, Colin Kalmbacher said, “What is more Austin than a bunch of vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores, all alongside each other, gorging themselves on hundreds of soy dogs for the sheer insanity of it?”

Woody Harrelson 40 Day Detox

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, November 29th, 2009 in Actors, Food & Drink, Nutrition-Health-Fitness.

Premiere of The Messenger

Woody Harrelson recently went on a 40 day detox that consisted of drinking only liquids.

“I went 22 days only having fruit juice, the rest of the time water,” Woody said.

“Also, I haven’t spoken a single word for most of the time. But it was totally worth it. Previously, I felt physically and spiritually blocked. Now I feel great.”

Skipping the heavy meal and going for a lighter snack of fruits and nuts is one thing, juicing for a day is another, but 40 days of detoxing?

Sounds faintish just thinking about it.

Original MTV Real World and VH1 Confessions of a Teen Idol star Eric Nies tried fasting to draw attention to world hunger, but did all the wrong things at first and ending up feeling dizzy and losing muscle before consulting with a friend who recommended energy drinks from fruit juice.

Guess the bottom line is, it’s always best to check with the doc before trying anything so drastic.

Have you fasted before and what were the results?

Woody Harrelson “The Messenger” Brings Ben Foster Vegan Food

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 in Actors, Food & Drink.

Premiere Of "The Messenger" - Arrivals

Woody Harrelson has a reputation for making people walk the vegan walk while filming movies.

And just as Woody got some cast members of Zombieland to eat veg on the set, he also convinced his co-star Ben Foster to give up meat and dairy on the set of The Messenger.

Foster told WENN:

“He walks the walk… He did drag me, begrudgingly, to several vegan restaurants, and I did enjoy them very much. I felt like I had more energy and wasn’t as foggy after eating, let’s say, a really killer steak.”

We assume he was appreciative of this cultural eating expansion, given the fact he gave Woody a big kiss in this photo.

“But he’s not evangelical about it. He lives by his routine… If someone’s interested, he has an encyclopedic knowledge on the subject and, if we talked about foods, he’ll share a point of view, but he’s not looking for converts.”

Unfortunately, Foster didn’t quite get The Messenger Woody was trying to give him and isn’t ready to give up meat yet.

“I like a healthy dose of blood in my diet,” Foster added.

Eww. How about a healthy dose of e. coli as well?

Max Records “Where The Wild Things Are” Veg School Lunch Protest

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, November 23rd, 2009 in Actors, Food & Drink.

"Where The Wild Things Are" New York Premiere

Max Records, the 12 year old actor who plays the ruler of his fantasy forest world in Where The Wild Things Are is a proud vegetarian.

He’s so good at playing this role, he even led a protest to get more vegetarian food options on his school lunch menu.

BTW, he was only eight years old when this protest happened.

Makes you feel lazy for not learning how to explain the difference between Silken and Chinese tofu before you were 21.

Could Max be the next person to lobby for changes to the Child Nutrition Act this year?

Jason Schwartzman Never “Bored To Death” With BabyCakes NYC

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, November 19th, 2009 in Actors, Business, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

Premiere Of "Fantastic Mr. Fox" - Arrivals

We’ve heard before the Bored To Death star Jason Schwartzman loves Erin McKenna‘s NYC bakery, Babycakes.

Tribecafilm.com recently spoke with Schwartzman who confirmed BabyCakes was still his baby, along with some other New York hot spots.

“Oh, my God! Well, Babycakes is heaven on earth, shall we say? I love the cupcakes and the food and the cookies and, in fact, Babycakes always sends me cookies when it’s the Super Bowl for my guests and stuff, but what I also love about Babycakes is their M.O., like the way Erin McKenna (who owns it) did it—she had a dream and made it come true. It’s really inspiring.”

“So besides Babycakes, my other favorite places are—you know the store Opening Ceremony? What I like about Opening Ceremony is, I don’t particularly look great in all those clothes, but it’s nice because it’s a place where it’s kind of going to like an art house movie theater, where you can just see lots of different movies and see what lots of people are up to and what they’re thinking… I mean, they have very wearable clothes, but they have extremes of all different kinds of things—things that are very forward and very beautiful and great designers that you wouldn’t see in other places. So what I like about it is just going through there and flipping through the clothes and saying, Wow, so this person had this idea to take this color, put it with that color, and stitch it like that…”

Film Forum is another place, and I like the place teany [a vegan restaurant and tea shop co-owned by Moby, currently closed because of a fire]…. I’d say Babycakes, Opening Ceremony, Other Music, and I like Southside Guitars and Rivington Guitars.”

David Tennant Heart Stopping Sandwich

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, November 17th, 2009 in Actors, Not So Vegetarian.

David Tennant

We’ve heard of some pretty disgusting meaty combinations before, but Doctor Who star David Tennant has a sandwich that makes us hurl.

During a recent radio interview, David mentioned he likes a processed meat and peanut butter delight.

“It’s an unusual combination – and not particularly good for you. You get really cheap white bread and smear it thick with peanut butter.

No, it’s always best to pass up white and go for whole grain. But it gets worse.

“Then you get those sausages that are really nasty processed meat and covered in shrink-wrapped U-shapes. You slice them into little discs and sink them into the peanut butter…”

Sausages and nasty processed meat? It’s like an increased risk for cancer and heart disease inside a bun.

“It makes quite an appealing kind of sandwich.”

“It is very dirty. You never have it more than once in a 10-year lifespan or your heart will stop.”

Once in a 10-year lifespan?

At least David’s got some things right.

Taylor Lautner Meat Baggy Accessories For “New Moon” Body

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, November 14th, 2009 in Actors, Not So Vegetarian.

'Twilight Saga: New Moon' Fans Event in Madrid

After hearing what Taylor Lautner ate to gain weight for his New Moon role, even vampire blood is starting to sound better.

“Yeah, so I carry around a Baggie and it has meat patties in it,” Lautner told Entertainment Weekly. “The worst is not the patties. It’s the sweet potatoes. They get raw and cold and gushy.”

Taylor’s meat and potatoes habit allowed him to put on 30 pounds, but how many points did he put on his cholesterol?

All the vegetarian and vegan male athletes like Tony Gonzalez, Prince Fielder, Georges Laraque and Brendan Brazier know seitan “wheat” meat or Gardein faux meat and potatoes would keep Taylor buffed and ripped, save a few animals and not significantly add to the carbon emissions dirtying up Mother Earth like meat production does.

You can view Taylor’s “animal” body of steel when New Moon hits theatres November 20.

Unfortunately, the experience won’t be nearly such a turn on for the veggie ladies.
