Anne Hathaway Similar To Her Princess Diaries Book Character

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, January 7th, 2009 in Actresses, Authors.

The Princess Diaries 2 Royal Engagement Film Premiere

Meg Cabot created the novel series “The Princess Diaries,” from which Disney snatched up and made two hit movies. She recently announced she’s retiring the “Diaries,” and has written the last book of the set.

When turning books into movies, there’s bound to be discrepancies between the movie and the book, especially when it comes to portraying the characters.

Cabot’s books told a story very similar to the movie: an awkward girl named Mia who suddenly had to deal with the life of royalty, boy troubles, and a highly opinionated best friend named Lilly Moscovitz.

However, Mia from the novel series was a vegetarian who had “slips,” occasionally. Although she’s an animal rights activist who’s passionate about the environment, in the 9th book she becomes disillusioned, stops caring, and starts chomping (on meat).

Ironically, you could say that Anne Hathaway, who portrayed Mia in the movie, also had vegetarian “slips,” here and there, going from vegetarian to eating meat to almost vegan.

Barack’s Daughter Sasha Obama Bringing Veggies To School

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, January 7th, 2009 in Children, Food & Drink, Politicians.

US President-elect Barack Obama enjoys shave ice with friends and family in Hawaii

He wanted more vegetables for the children and now it looks like his daughter will be helping to carry out his wish for the entire Washington D.C. area.

Sasha Obama, Barack’s youngest daughter, is attending Sidwell Friends School in D.C. where part of the children’s education is to teach them about helping those less fortunate.

One such program is making soup for Martha’s Table, which according to their website, is designed to “help at-risk children, youth, families and individuals in our community improve their lives by providing educational programs, food, clothing, and enrichment opportunities.”

Sasha will be bringing fresh veggies to school which will be used to make soup that will be delivered to Martha’s Table.

From the Sidwell Friends website:

Each Wednesday, children bring a vegetable from home as their contribution to the makings of a 50 lb. pot of soup. Classes take turns collecting and cutting the vegetables, which are then delivered to Martha’s Table by a parent volunteer. The children are reminded to bring their Wednesday vegetable by painting a magnetic tile to take home to place on their refrigerators.

KROQ Almost Acoustic Xmas - Day 1

Not happy with band mate Davey Havok hogging all the vegan fashion spotlight with his Zu Boutique designer clothing, AFI bassist Hunter Burgan has agreed to be the Vegan Ambassador for MacBeth Shoes.

MacBeth has “crowned” him Vegan Ambassador and announced the news that he is designing another vegan shoe for the line.

Wonder if there is serious catty competition among the boys lately?

In a statement, MacBeth said:

“Burgan’s dedication to vegan ideals and his friendship with Macbeth have already helped build the Macbeth Vegan program into what it is today. Burgan will be the face and focus of Macbeth’s Vegan program, involved in all things vegan related, from hosting a new vegan blog to helping with design, and everything in between.”

The shoe, aptly titled, “The Hunter,” was designed to be not only pretty, but functional as well.

“Burgan’s design goal for his second Studio Project was to create a vegan high top that is the perfect marriage between fashion and function. He needs a shoe that provides ankle support for his active live performances, but also wanted something that reflects his sophisticated design aesthetic.”

Burgan’s pretty/practical high top is scheduled to be available globally in February. By then, Davey will have a new T-shirt out and one-upped him.

Anthony Kiedis Shares Vegan Chef Love With Whale Wars

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, January 6th, 2009 in Chefs, Food & Drink, Male Musicians, Male Singers.

4th Annual MusiCares Benefit Concert - Arrivals

Remember Anthony Kiedis’ personal vegan chef, Laura Dakin, he hired last year? She’s now working on the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s “Whale Wars” boat, Steve Irwin.

Laura is the gal who makes sure the crew gets three vegan meals a day while fighting Japanese hunters in the Southern Ocean.

She’s the Chief Cook on board and has held this position since 2005. Guess Anthony’s had to share her vegan food lovin’!

She’s got the seas in her blood-her father was an Australian Naval Officer.

You gotta wonder how poor Anthony gets by in the kitchen when Laura’s performing her duties at sea.

Oh, Joe He Didn’t!

MTV's TRL

Update: Some sources say he locked his keys in his car in a Wendy’s Parking Lot and gave into a chicken sandwich. Some say Dairy Queen. If anyone can verify the exact meat wh*re he solicited that night, we’d like to set the record straight. Currently, there are no financial prizes, but you’ll be rewarded with pride and joy.

Joe Trohman, lead guitarist for the musical group Fall Out Boy, isn’t a vegetarian or vegan like bandmates Andy Hurley and Patrick Stump.

But there was a time.

He is often quoted as saying he used to be vegetarian. Then one day he found himself in a Dairy Queen parking lot. The rest is carnivore history.

He sure could use an Andy Hurley shake.

Karl Lagerfeld: Kill Fur Coat Before Fur Coat Kills You!

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, January 5th, 2009 in Fashion, Fur, Not So Vegetarian.

Fashion Group International Presents The 25th Annual Night Of Stars

Where is Tim Gunn and his anti-fur video when you need him?

Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld recently defended the use of fur in the industry.

“In a meat-eating world, wearing leather for shoes and clothes and even handbags, the discussion of fur is childish,” he told The Telegraph.

Although he doesn’t personally wear fur, he insists that people make a living from hunting and “killing those beasts who would kill us if they could.”

Lagerfeld’s statements might make sense if we all lived in caveman days. But someone should inform him that fur today is produced in factories and much of it comes from countries with no ethical standards whatsoever as to how the animals are treated.

It’s a pretty sure thing that today’s Hollywood starlets aren’t thinking, “Darn it, that fox is going to eat me. Make me a coat, quick!” Not to mention how ferocious the 4 lb. mink are.

He agrees that animals should be killed “nicely” as much as possible and admits he’s a wuss when it comes to eating them.

“I can hardly eat meat because it has to look like something what it was not when it was alive,” he said.

The last time we checked, fur looks the same on or off the original live animal.

Stella McCartney Still Steppin’ Out

Last month, vegan shoe lovers cried a river after learning the news that our dear Natalie Portman’s line of Te Casan shoes had ceased production due to a bad economy.

But Stella McCartney, her UK sole sister (pun intended), is still steppin’ strong and you can wear her gorgeous brown suedette boot this winter, looking sharp with a clear conscious.

Be ritzy, yet comfortable with a combination of a spike heel and slouchy ankle.

Best of all, you know the only skin ever involved with them is your own.
