FUR Get Me Not Christina Applegate Expected To Recover From Breast Cancer

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, August 4th, 2008 in Actresses, Fur.

“Samantha Who?” star Christina Applegate is undergoing treatment for breast cancer, but is expected to fully recover, according to her publicist.

Fortunately, the disease was caught in an early stage. Ironically, she is scheduled to appear in the Stand Up To Cancer Telethon next month, which now will probably be an even more personal experience than for some other stars also participating.

Last Holiday season, Applegate joined forces with PETA for a very provocative Christmas e-card, urging holiday shoppers not to buy fur as gifts. The card, shown above, reads, “Cross cruelty off your shopping list by avoiding fur coats, collars, and cuffs (unless it’s fake, of course).”

Peter Rojas became a millionaire blogger reviewing electronic equipment at Engadget. Some of his latest entrepreneurial adventures include RCRD LBL, which works with record labels and artists to provide free music downloads. His considers his veganism a “very personal thing,” but for someone so personal, he sure exposed a lot of details of what he ate during the week of July 24th-30th to NYMag.

He and fellow vegan Moby also seem to be stalking each other.

“I always see Moby out at vegan restaurants,” Rojas said. “Half the time I go out to eat he’s there.”

Mere coincidence? Rojas stalking Moby? Moby stalking Rojas? Rather than solve the riddle of the (faux) chicken and (mock) egg, we’d rather be stalkers ourselves and bring you voyeuristic pleasure of learning what Rojas had to eat.

“I was out in California for a couple of days on business, and since the guys I was meeting with knew I’m vegan (twelve years!), they took me to Cafe Gratitude, a raw-food place in San Rafael.”

Friday, July 25
“I got the vegetarian bento box.”

Saturday, July 26
“I got the tofu scramble and home fries.”

Sunday, July 27
“I had some granola cereal from Whole Foods…then cooked a massaman curry with tofu and vegetables. I kind of screwed it up by adding too much lime juice to it — not sure what I was thinking.”

Monday, July 28
“I had more cereal for breakfast. Then I made a smoothie for lunch.”

Tuesday, July 29
“I ordered some Moroccan chickpea thing, which was good (but not great), but the real highlights were the stuffed-avocado salad and the totally vegan brownie sundae.”

Wednesday, July 30
“I had the vegetarian meatballs with Thai black rice.”

And what does he think of what the city that never sleeps has to offer its vegan food patrons?

“There’s a pretty good selection of vegan restaurants in New York — it’s really easy. I kind of wish there were a Manhattan equivalent of Foodswings in Brooklyn — it’s a vegan fast-food kind of place with fake chicken, all kinds of fake stuff.”

Dan Piraro: Do You Have To Show Your Chicken Breasts In Public?

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, August 4th, 2008 in Animal Issues, Cartoonists.

Farm Sanctuary Gala 2004

Dan Piraro and his wife, Ashely Lou, attended the 2008 Farm Sanctuary Gala in May, along with several celebrities, including Russell Simmons, Emily Deschanel, Lisa Edelstein, and Hal Sparks.

Farm Sanctuary’s mission is to protect the well being of farm animals, through education, rescue, and other directives. The gala serves to raise money for the organization via both a dinner party and an auction.

Dan Piraro, creator of the Comic Strip, Bizarro donated 2 pieces of his artwork, one which poked fun at some people’s repulsion by women breast feeding in public. The scene featured a hippie-looking mother in a restaurant asking another mother, “Do you have to do that in public?” as she feeds her child chicken breast meat.

It was a visit to a farm animal sanctuary that swayed Piraro in the veg direction, but he hasn’t always thought fondly of those involved with animal rights, as he told Metroactive 2 years ago:

“If somebody had told me five years ago that I was going to be an animal-rights activist and a vegan, I would have laughed in their face,” Piraro said.

“Back then I thought, like most people, that animal-rights activists were hippies with too much spare time…”

“I met these farm animals–cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, sheep–in a non-stressed environment where they were allowed to be the kinds of animals that they are supposed to be.”

“And I realized that they are not stupid eating machines that didn’t care whether they lived or died. I saw first-hand that these guys are every bit as sentient and emotional and affectionate and diverse as cats and dogs–and people, for that matter.”
