Divided into the four seasons of Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter, the chapters of American Grown: The Story of the White House Garden and Gardens Across America contain photographs of the White House Garden’s progress throughout the year, tips for starting and maintaining private and community gardens and, as expected, delicious recipes.

Michelle Obama invited local school children to harvest vegetables from the garden when she was caught holding a prized possession from the patch.

The sweet potato was picked at the beginning of prime season (October through January) and this Thanksgiving favorite in the U.S. is sure to please White House guests in some dish soon.

Sometimes mistaken for yams, sweet potatoes are actually an entirely different vegetable, a root of the vine in the morning glory family that dates back to 750 B.C. in Peruvian records.

First Lady Michelle Obama hosts Spring Garden Planting in Washington

Michelle Obama‘s White House garden is expanding!

The garden will be enlarged from 1,100 to 1,500 square feet to accommodate four additional vegetables of bok choy, white cauliflower, artichokes and mustard greens.

Once again, Mrs. Obama invited local school children to help plant this year’s seeds.

According to Treehugger, last year the garden yielded 1,000 pounds of food that was eaten by White House Staff and at State dinners or donated to local homeless shelters.

Another accomplishment for the garden last year was employing the use of “hoop houses,” protective structures placed over the plants to protect them from the winter’s freeze, allowing 50 pounds of food to be harvested during the winter.

Michelle Obama gave a speech to the U.S. Conference of Mayors at the Capital Hilton this week which highlighted the need to combat childhood obesity.

The First Lady has taken a leadership role in encouraging healthier habits in children and adults.

Appearing on Sesame Street, she and Elmo urged children to eat more fruits and vegetables.

She showed up to support local and fresh produce at the nearby Farmers Market in D.C.

And according to Jocelyn Frye, the first lady’s domestic policy adviser, good habits start in the home–or at least in the yard of the home.

“We didn’t want to have a garden just to have a garden,” said Frye of the White House garden, according to the Washington Post. “It was a vehicle for talking about children’s health.”

Mrs. Obama’s ideas to reduce the childhood obesity epidemic include ensuring healthier options are in school lunches, encouraging more physical activity, increasing the availability of healthy food in every neighborhood and giving parents and kids better nutrition education.

Iron Chef America will open its season premier on January 3 2009 at the White House using fresh produce from Michelle Obama‘s garden.

The Food Network show hosted by Alton Brown will feature White House chef Cristeta Comerford paired with Bobby Flay to compete against Mario Batali and Emeril Lagasse.

The “secret” ingredient the chefs must use in their dishes is anything that grows in the White House garden.

Michelle will also use the opportunity to discuss encouraging children’s healthier eating habits and reducing childhood obesity.

“What’s exciting for us is this is the first time I can remember the White House taking an active interest in doing something about diet and health,” Batali said.

Looking forward to this episode.

Would love to see a cookoff featuring the Obamas and two chefs!

Royals Attend Christmas Day Service At Sandringham

Today is Prince William’s birthday.

You may or may not care, depending on your fan meter, but you should know that his grandma wants to make the Royal Palace a little more green.

After meeting with First Lady Michelle Obama, where some scandalous touching took place, The Queen and Mrs. O hit it off. Queen Elizabeth has decided to follow her friend’s latest trend and plant organic vegetables in a 40 acre lot in the back of the Palace.

The garden will have runner beans, leeks, beetroot, and an endangered variety of climbing French beans called Blue Queen.

This will be the first time since World War II that plants have been grown at the Palace.

Mrs. Obama recently broke ground for the White House garden and last week invited local children to harvest and eat lettuce and snap peas.
