Alicia Silverstone has always lent her voice to events that promote healthy living and she’ll be hosting the Seed Food and Wine Festival’s Vedge dinner with Rich Landau and Kate Jacoby Friday, October 17 at the Tongue & Cheek in South Beach.

The actress spoke with Miami New Times about her latest book, The Kind Mama, and some of the misconceptions people may have about raising vegan children.

“Dear Prudence” Slams Grandma’s Beef With Vegans

What advice would you give to an overly concerned grandmother who, against mom’s wishes, feeds her grandchild a Happy Meal and thinks tofu over ground beef is cause for a call to the Child Protection authorities?

“Dear Prudence”, a regular feature at Slate, is suggesting granny take her Centrum Silver and any other supplements that help the elderly think because “lack of ham and Swiss doesn’t rise to the same level of concern as beating and molestation” and “probably half the children in Berkeley, Calif. would be removed from their homes if this constituted child abuse.”

Christine Taylor and Ben Stiller are trying to raise their children on a plant-based diet, but Taylor admits it’s a little harder once they’ve been introduced to animal products.

“We have friends that are vegan and their kids came out vegan,” Taylor told People. “I’m so jealous that they had the information and they started the kids early because now to go back, it’s a little harder.”

There have been a few stories of controversy surrounding parents raising their children on a vegan diet.

The reports highlighted adults who were irresponsible about the decision, instead of researching and feeding their kids well balanced plant meals to keep them healthy.

Thankfully, Heather Mills is casting a much brighter spotlight on vegan children, as she spoke to Extra.

“You educate the moms. It’s very important that the kids get healthy food,” Heather said.
