Cannot Buy My Soul The Songs of Kev Carmody

After converting his ’59 Lincoln continental into an electric car, Neil Young was so excited to share the green love, he created an album inspired by it, Fork in the Road.

But not everyone was excited to hear “Cough Up The Buck” and “Fuel Line,” as one commenter on a website examining the lyrics to one of his songs said, “No one wants him to retire, but we really need to quit pretending that the lyrics don’t suck.”

Vegan singer and songwriter Missy Higgins recognizes how spreading the seemingly enthusiastic eco friendly love isn’t for every musical artist, so she stays away from it.

“I’ve tried, but I can’t figure out a way to do it without sounding cliché. Some people protest through their music, and some have to do it through other means. Midnight Oil does it pretty well [through their music]. They’re big environmentalists.”

“For me, it’s more of a personal thing. I don’t judge any musician or nonmusician for living the sort of lifestyle that they do. I think it all comes down to conscience and making the decision for you and your life. Everyone’s at a different point of realization.”

“The first few tours I did, I was talking about [green issues] on stage. Then I just figured I probably shouldn’t talk about it every tour, so now I guess I’m just talking about it in interviews. It’s something I’ve been doing for quite a while now, so it doesn’t feel like news.”

Missy could count herself as being in the upper echelon of green musicians. Her biggest green move is being vegan. She also donated profits from her song, “Steer,” to the Sierra Club’s Two Percent Project, makes her tours carbon neutral, and performed at Live Earth Australia last year.

Missy Higgins Fronts New PETA Anti-Fur Ad With Best Friend Izzy

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, April 17th, 2009 in Female Musicians, Female Singers, Fur.

We admit we’re in love with Missy Higgins. But what’s not to love about her?

A vegan with a beautiful voice and equally talented song writing skills, she’s no stranger to animal issues either. Remember when she got cuddly with the piggy?

Now she’s cozying up with Izzy the dog, and both want to convey a serious message about animals and the fur industry.

“If you wouldn’t wear your dog, please don’t wear any fur,” reads the ad.

“The only difference between your “best friend” and animals killed for their fur is how we treat them. All animals suffer and feel pain. Please don’t wear any fur or fur trim.”

Missy Higgins’ fans know who she is!

During a recent conversation on the missyhiggins.org forum, one fan wanted to know where Missy got her wickedly delicious guitar strap shown here.

Much talk went on about the origins of the strap, including the theory it came from a vintage porn shop. Don’t ask us how they arrived at that one. We won’t go there.

One fan offers some insight into the materials in the strap:

“Based on what the strap looks like, I think your best bet is some sort of cotton/nylon strap with what normally would be leather or suede ends, but the vegan in her probably opposes any cow hide for the strap.”

Woohoo! Missy has taught her fans well, as they’re well schooled on her principles when it comes to animal products.

Missy Higgins: They Think Fried Chicken Is Vegetarian

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, March 14th, 2009 in Female Musicians, Female Singers, Food & Drink.

Missy Higgins

If you live in the US, traveling to some other countries can be a pain when it comes to finding good vegetarian food.

But, hey, who are the Americans to brag? There are still some places in the States where if you say, “Tofu,” they think you’re hurling an insult at them.

Singer-songwriter and musician Missy Higgins keeps her veganism while on tour, but that doesn’t mean it’s always easy to do, as she explained in the Minneapolis StarTribune.

Although the Australian born lady thinks the best thing about the US are its open minded people, one of the worst things is finding food in smaller towns.

“Their idea of vegetarian is fried chicken,” she said.

Poor thing!

Oh yeah! We’re going down under this week.

Missy Higgins is the queen of green, and has spoken out about the importance of being environmentally friendly. She’s even greened her tours!

Sophie Monk stirred quite some controversy last year when she was photographed carrying bags of KFC goodies to her car. She later said she was just buying some food for a homeless man.

So between the two Australian hotties, who would you rather do…

Okay, so their feet look small on stage and this picture is kinda blurry, but this tidbit came from none other than the Macbeth headquarters, so you know it’s gotta be fact.

Switchfoot has been updating their blog, The Daily Foot, with photos of concerts and the boys just chilling out and having fun.

Some of the photos uploaded show the band rocking in Macbeth vegan shoes!

Several musical acts like Tegan and Sara, Frank Iero, and Missy Higgins have used Macbeth’s cruelty free vegan shoes to support their feet while jumping and lunging during concerts.

Including shoes designed by celebrities, Macbeth has quite a selection of vegan footwear.

With so many trendy shoes available without animal products, why would anyone ever want to buy leather?

Veronicas’ Jess Origliasso Says Screw Fur, PETA Loves It

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, January 28th, 2009 in Female Musicians, Female Singers, Fur.

Jess Origliasso, member of the pop duo The Veronicas was doing green and good when she was discovered by PETA agents and asked to do a naked anti-fur ad.

Origliasso was riding the New York subway wearing a faux fur jacket that read, “F*** Fur” painted on the back.

Anyone with a message this blatant is clearly PETA ad talent, so they approached with the idea which she is strongly considering.

“Lisa and I support any foundation that is willing to educate and make a stand for animal liberation,” she told Confidential.

“Death for these animals is a horror story – the most common method used for killing foxes is electrocution. I can’t speak for Lisa, but I admire the approach to the eye-catching photo shoots PETA do to get the important message out there.

“I would definitely love to be involved in something like that.”

If she chooses to accept the offer, she’ll be following the footsteps of fellow celebrity Aussie ladies who have worked with the organization like Natalie Imbruglia, Sophie Monk, and Missy Higgins.
