You will probably never attend a memorial service where the guests dress like this.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals made an appearance at Michael Jackson’s memorial service and took the opportunity to promote vegetarianism with a sign that read, “Go Vegetarian For The Man In The Mirror.”

The pop star was vegetarian, and the group is currently trying to get permission to use a song he sang for a movie, “Ben,” to educate people on the conditions of rodents in research laboratories.

“Ben” features Michael singing about a boy’s love for his pet rat.

Michael Jackson’s Last Vegetarian Meals Revealed

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, July 3rd, 2009 in Food & Drink, Male Singers.

MICHAEL JACKSON DEATH

AEG promoter Randy Phillips has revealed some of the last meals Michael Jackson ate while rehearsing for what would have been 50 sold out concert performances.

Apparently the vegetarian Jackson was so focused, he would forget to eat and Phillips and other members of the crew had to force him to.

“He used to forget to eat because he was so focused and Kenny Ortega and I used to cut up his food and physically feed him,” the UK Mirror quoted Phillips as saying.

Phillips said some of Jackson’s favorite dishes were vegetarian lasagna, steamed broccoli, nut loaf or tofu with chili sauce.

We’ve touched on Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song” before, for which he won the Doris Day Music Award at the Genesis Awards in 1996.

The song was never released in the United States, but was a chart topper in the UK, even beating out famed hits like “Thriller” and “Beat It.”

The video depicts various scenes of basically humankind destroying the Earth-from pollution to war and famine to animal abuse.

Seal slaughter is an assault on both animals and the environment and Jackson features a short clip of one being clubbed by a hunter around minute 3:25.

Thanks to activism, Canadian Seal slaughters were down by 200,000 in this year’s hunt and history was made when the European Union voted to ban the trade of seal products.  In the past, Europe has been a target market for Canadian seal products.

Now, we’re finding out more favorite foods the vegetarian enjoyed.

Larry Banares, a Filipino American celebrity chef based in San Diego, has spilled the lard-free re-fried beans that Michael had a thing for Mexican food.

“One that really sticks in my mind was a kind of a Mexican dish,” Banares said. “He loved tofu and cheese enchiladas with the green tomatillo sauce. And we perfected that dish because it was one of Michael’s absolute favorites.”

You know the drill. Life’s short, so you ate your sweet potato pie dessert first. Now it’s time for lunch or dinner.

Here’s the recipe for the tofu enchiladas. Don’t forget your green sauce.

And the musical selection for the day is…Streetwalker.

PETA Wants Michael Jackson Song “Ben” As Anthem

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Male Singers, Videos.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), a group which sometimes criticized Michael Jackson for his use and treatment of animals, has written to the family of the late singer to request permission to use his song, “Ben” as a means to draw attention to rats used in laboratories.

“Ben,” is a song written for Michael in the 70s on the Motown label about a boy and his pet rat for a film with the same title.

PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman told WENN, “Michael Jackson’s hit has always been a moving testament to the power of empathy for animals.”

“If more people could be inspired by his song to stop supporting the cruel and ineffective animal-testing industry, it would be a fitting and enduring tribute to this talented performer.”

“They don’t see you as I do. I wish they would try to. I’m sure they’d think again. If they had a friend like Ben.”

We have to stop writing because those lyrics are putting tears in our eyes. Watch the video to see a very young Michael, probably barely 13, perform “Ben.”

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, June 28th, 2009 in Actresses.

FARRAH FAWCETT

Actress Farrah Fawcett succumbed to cancer on the same day Michael Jackson passed.

One restaurant owner who’s place Farrah frequented claims she always ordered the vegetarian dish.

Antonietta Terrigno, owner of Osteria de Medici in Kensington, Alberta in Canada was reflecting on the actress and said, “She was a vegetarian so she had the Pasta Primavera. She was with a friend and they were very friendly.”

This was back in 2006. Was Farrah a vegetarian who kept quiet about her diet and lifestyle? Or did she embrace the diet later in life?

Our thoughts go out to her family, friends, and fans.

Michael Jackson Expressed Interest In Vegetarian Pregnancy

Written by Vegetarian Star on Saturday, June 27th, 2009 in Male Singers.

Michael Jackson walks with kids Prince and Paris through a studio parking lot in Los Angeles

The year was 1983 and newly vegetarian Michael Jackson had wandered into The Golden Temple restaurant, where he was a regular.

Although Michael had no children of his own yet, he was extremely interested in learning how the mother’s vegetarian diet would affect pregnancy and the outcome of the baby.

He met David Wallechinsky, now editor-in-chief at Allgov.com, who’s wife was pregnant and the two engaged in conversation and kept in touch so Michael could see the beautiful and healthy child born to a vegetarian mother and learn what it was like to be father.

Although some otherwise vegetarian woman say they experienced strange meat cravings during pregnancy, the truth is, nutritionists and doctors say vegetarian and vegan pregnancies can be completely healthy.

For some great examples of how to get all your nutrition on a veg diet when you’re expecting, visit Physician’s Committee For Responsible Medicine’s page on Vegetarian Diets For Pregnancy.
