Who Would You: Joan Jett Or Chrissie Hynde

Ah, the female vegan rocker edition!

They both love vegan food and rock and roll. Granted, Chrissie has an advantage, since she can have her chefs whip up something gourmet and vegan at her restaurant and all. So who would you…

Chrissie Hynde Finds Singing Hard When Smelling Burnt Flesh

Farm Sanctuary Gala 2004

The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde has never been one to keep her mouth shut, especially when it comes to her veganism and animal rights views.

One day she was performing at a concert with Neil Young when she expressed her disgust with the aroma coming from the venue’s concession stands.

“I’m trying very hard not to say anything about the fact that all I can smell is burning flesh,” she was quoted as saying.

There are a lot of bad things you can smell at a concert-too much beer ,cigarette stench, and B.O. For the vegetarian, add the neighbor in the next seat’s fried chicken fingers to that list.

Hynde may not be able to avoid the smell of burnt animal flesh at concert venues, but she’s trying hard to make sure dead animal is not roasting backstage. She has expressed her preference not to tour with meat eaters so she doesn’t have to share the catering with them.

“I’m a great subscriber to Chrissie Hynde’s perspective that when you’re working for a social cause, the danger isn’t in going far enough or feeling embarrassed or that it’s in bad taste. You’ve got to really push the envelope. Animals are in desperate trouble in the fur farms, in the laboratories.”

—-Ingrid Newkirk, President of People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), when asked if there were any animal rights campaigns she regretted during an interview with Willamette Week.

Living in the UK has rubbed off on The Pretender’s Chrissie Hynde. Much like her fellow citizen Morrissey, she’s vegetarian and would prefer to share space with her kind.

“I would love to headline something, ’cause then I don’t have to share the catering with meat eaters,” she told Billboard.com.

“I love working with other bands, and I certainly don’t mind supporting another band. I don’t have to be the headliner; that’s never been an issue for me at all. I’m just more concerned about sharing the catering.”

See. Unlike other acts, she’s not a prima donna looking to steal the spotlight. Just looking for a meat-free buffet back on the rider.

Chrissie Hynde Doubts There’s Good Vegan Food In Prison

Written by Vegetarian Star on Monday, October 27th, 2008 in Female Musicians, Female Singers.

Chrissie Hynde Joins PETA Protest Of KFC

Chrissie Hynde answered some questions for the readers of Blender.com. One reader mentioned that Hynde was once arrested during a PETA protest and wondered if you could get a good vegan meal in jail. (We wonder why this person asked the question…Planning ahead for something?) Chrissie said she didn’t know because she hadn’t stayed long enough to eat much. But in her short experience, she doesn’t think so.

We guess it all just depends on which prison you end up in. PETA published a list of the best vegetarian prisons, but Chrissie only served a short time in jail, so she never got to hear the words, “bon Appetit,” behind big time bars.

All this sparks an interesting question. There’s been discussion as to whether or not prisoners should be allowed to demand a vegetarian or vegan meal when the prison isn’t one of Peta’s top 10. In other words, should prisons (and taxpayers) go out of their way to ensure those in prison (who obviously have had other rights, such as voting, taken away) get meatless food even if it’s purely for preference and not for special dietary (allergy) reasons.

Arguably, switching prisoners to an all veg diet might even cut down on lifelong complications, such as diabetes, for those who are serving long term sentences (and those who the state is paying the most money for).

Of course most of us vegetarians will say yes. But what about you other guys? Flexitarians, any opinions?

School’s been back in session for a little over a month (in places where there’s summer break) and it’s time to show who’s made progress.

Sprig.com has graded the top vegan celebrities. Moby and Chrissie Hynde are serving as valedictorians, both receiving an A+ and no one got anything less than a B-.

The class consists of the following celebrity vegan pupils: Natalie Portman, Casey Affleck, Joaquin Phoenix (who only had one bad pizza experience, and it wasn’t in the school cafeteria), Russell Simmons, Alicia Silverstone, Prince, Shania Twain, Moby, Chrissie Hynde, Chris Martin, Pam Anderson, Andre 3000 Benjamin, and Tobey Maguire.

Oh, and of course, there’s plenty of school pictures. Only they look waaaay better than any of us did in ours.

Those who dream big will often have naysayers. Even if you’re an accomplished multi-album producing rock star. Such was the case with Chrissie Hynde when she threw up the idea of a vegan restaurant in the heart of the midwest.

“There wasn’t one vegetarian restaurant in Akron, so I said, ‘I’ll do it,’ and it’s just been a phenomenon,” she said.

“Everybody told me, ‘Don’t do it, it will not work. But I had to do it anyway, because I had to have somewhere I could eat.”

Although she lives in the UK, she frequently stops by Ohio to check up on her chefs, visit family, and of course, get her hands involved with serving customers. At her restaurant, The Vegiterranean’s opening, she even personally served veggie burgers to police officers.

Yeah Chrissie! That sure beats the stereotyped cop fare of donuts and 7-Eleven snack food.
