Big Brother is holding its live auditions and it looks as if another veggie could be cast as one of the housemates.

Sam is a 21 year old who lists his occupation as a “graffiti artist” but don’t expect to tag murals of cage-free hens or any other depictions of happier, freer animal life, as he could care less about them.

“I just hate the taste and texture, I don’t care about animals dying”.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, July 16th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Reality TV.

Bob Harper
Bob Harper will kick off Farm Sanctuary’s 2010 Walk For Animals, an event meant to raise money for one of the nation’s leading farm animal protection agencies that rescues farm animals and educates the public on the conditions these animals endure in factory farms.

Since vegetarian Harper is one of the fitness gurus behind the popular weight loss reality TV show, The Biggest Loser, it’s only fitting he would put his face behind a campaign to keep both people and animals healthy.

“Getting and staying physically fit is a lot easier when you have a powerful motivation, and I can’t think of a better reason to get moving this fall than to raise vital funds and awareness for farm animals,” said Harper.

“Cupcake Wars” Contestant Dishes On Vegan Baking Challenges

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, July 13th, 2010 in Food & Drink, Reality TV.

The owners of Sugar Cupcakery were thrilled to compete on the debut episode of the Food Network show, Cupcake Wars, but along with the fame and excitement came a little apprehension.

Krista Tevar of the bakery described a situation akind to a football team playing on a turf other than home. It’s hard to get adjusted sometimes.

“I thought, ‘How are we going to pull this off? We’ve barely gotten the store open,'” Tevar said. “It was challenging to work under the time constraints and to be out of our element. We didn’t have the equipment we’re used to and everything was different, especially the ovens.”

“Vegan cupcakes in particular have certain cooking temperatures and times that we’ve honed to our equipment. We have no real culinary experience, so it was hard to jump into another place.”

The sole vegan face of Big Brother, Sunshine Martyn, was recently given the boot from the house.

Too bad, as she served as a great lesson in the joys and pitfalls the lifestyle can bring, such as when she broke the stereotype by revealing she hated tofu and found it difficult at first to get the items she wanted to eat.

Of course, her carnivorous housemates discussed how easier it would be to shop for food with her departure, hinting it may have been a reason for her eviction.

Sunshine thought her exit was because she refused to share her stash of vegan items with her hungry house mates.

“Because I didn’t share my crisps until the day after,” she said.

That’s right, Sunshine. They were just hungry and jealous. Mmm…what flavor were those crisps again?

PETA’s has tallied the votes for sexiest vegetarians and vegans Bob Harper and Olivia Wilde have been crowned King and Queen.

A healthy body weight is linked to sexiness and as one of the coaches on the weight loss reality TV show, The Biggest Loser, Harper spells sex with a capital “S.” He recently revealed he’d gone vegan and he encourages contestants on the NBC show to adopt at least a mostly vegetarian diet to reach their weight loss goals.

Now that Wilde holds the title of PETA’s sexiest female, she can now boast to her husband she’s royalty too.

Sunshine Martyn revealed on an episode of Big Brother she is not of fan of soybean curd.

After being given tofu, hummus and some other items to suit her vegan diet while her housemates received pizza, she requested a pizza without cheese.

“It’s just that I hate that tofu, it’s horrible. I just didn’t feel part of it because they give me food that needs cooking and they give you pizza. Everything’s getting on top of me and I thought that I’d get a nice piece of food, and then I get a salad.”

Tofu haters who aim to be vegetarian, need not be alarmed. Contrary to the stereotype, vegetarians and vegans get their protein from many sources other than what some think looks and tastes like a make-up sponge.

Lentils, beans, legumes, chickpeas, pasta, seitan, tempeh, nut butters, trail mix, oatmeal, rice, cereals, granola, soy milk, falafel, faux meats…Need more suggstions?
