Vidya Balan

Vidya Balan and MP Dr. Shashi Tharoor have been chosen as PETA India’s Sexiest Vegetarians in an online poll.

Bollywood star Balan said of the honor, “Adopting a vegetarian diet may seem like a small choice, but it has an enormous impact on the world around us. The ‘hottest vegetarian’ recognition is an honour, but if you ask me, everyone who goes vegetarian is ‘hot’, since they each make the world a better place every day.”

She has plenty of hot company in India, as some polls indicate the percentage of vegetarians in the country range from 20-42 percent.

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, January 12th, 2011 in Animal Issues, Film & TV, Politicians.

There may never be a rendition titled, “Rudolph got blown up by Sarah Palin” because the former governor of Alaska and vice-presidential candidate’s TLC show, “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” has been axed.

The first episode drew a record 5 million viewers, but that success dropped quickly to 40% by the second episode.

Of course, there were animal killings and controversy.

Joan Rivers Supports NYC Law Against Prolonged Dog Chaining

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, December 21st, 2010 in Actresses, Animal Issues, Politicians.

Joan Rivers

Joan Rivers has written to New York city council member Christine C. Queen, urging the passage of a law proposed by councilman Peter Vallone, Jr. that would forbid keeping a dog chained for more than three hours during a 12 hour period.

“I hope this Tethering Bill passes not just for the sake of the poor dogs tied up outside in the cold, but for the sake of the sons of bitches* who do this—because what I’d do to the creeps would be far worse than what any police officer would do!” Rivers wrote in the letter.

Almost four years ago, Vallone called for this type of measure, saying, “There’s no reason to have your dogs chained up for more than three hours. They become more aggressive, they bite more, they’re nervous, and they’re scared.”

Obama Signs Truth In Fur Labeling Act

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, December 21st, 2010 in Animal Issues, Fur, Politicians.

Barack Obama

December is proving to be nothing but “lame” on Capitol Hill, especially when it comes to animal welfare laws.

Just days after banning crush videos, President Obama has signed the Truth in Fur Labeling Act (H.R. 2480), which made its final route through Congress in the Senate earlier this month.

The new law closes the loophole in an already existing law that allows real fur to go unlabelled as such if the garment is worth $150 or less.

Bill Clinton

Bill Clinton has been chosen as person of the year by animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Earlier this year, the former president of the United States announced he’d gone vegan to slim down for his daughter Chelsea’s wedding. He lost 24 pounds, but kept his vegan diet because he’s motivated by studies showing most people who eat a plant-based diet can prevent and reverse heart disease.

“Studies have proved that vegetarians and vegans live, on average, six to 10 years longer than meat-eaters,” PETA writes on its website.

Canadian Politician Trudeau Fur Card Is No Holiday For Animal Lovers

Trudeau Christmas Card

Trudeau Christmas Card

Liberal MP Justin Trudeau gave animal rights activists the equivalent to a lump of coal in their Christmas stockings when they got news of this holiday card picturing he and his family wrapped in clothing made from coyote fur.

Trudeau said he gladly supports Canadian products and “sustainable fur,” but insists no political statement was meant by what he called a simple Christmas card.

One member of PETA commented, saying, “I think it was disturbing, especially at this time of year in a greeting card. Where is the cheer in wearing the skins of animals?”

Sarah Palin

Sarah Palin is still justifying her caribou kill on her TLC show, “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” by arguing she’s feeding her family with stuff’s that’s healthier than what’s in the supermarket.

During an interview with Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts, Palin explained her stance.

“We eat, therefore we hunt — and I am thankful that I get to feed my kids organic food,” Palin said.

However, studies have shown that wild game isn’t really that organic after all, and could contain dangerous levels of lead due to the way it’s killed in the wild. The Department of Natural Resources has warned against eating wild game because of this and a study conducted by British and Spanish researchers published in the journal PLos ONE found similar results.

Bo Obama, First Dog, Receives Vegan Treats From PETA

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, December 15th, 2010 in Animal Issues, Food & Drink, Politicians.

Bo Obama

Bo Obama, America’s first dog, has been exceptionally good this year by not chewing up the first lady’s dinner party shoes and as a reward, he’s getting some vegan dog treats from PETA.

In a letter addressed to Michelle, PETA’s president Ingrid Newkirk also reminds the first family that a harness might make Bo more comfortable during walks.

“As animal rights advocates, we would be remiss if we didn’t make sure that Bo got a gift basket from PETA headquarters here in Washington,” the letter says.
