John Salley Gives Chicago Students Veggie Burgers

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, April 14th, 2009 in Athletes-Games-Sports, Food & Drink.

22nd Annual Sports Spectacular - Show

Montel Williams’ daughter Wyntergrace isn’t the only one concerned about vegetarian options in school lunches.

Students at Carter Elementary and Williams Preparatory Academy is Chicago, Illinois are getting a taste of Soul Veg Restaurant in the Windy City thanks to basketball legend John Salley.

Salley teamed up with PETA to provide veggie burger giveaways to the schools where he will screen his new ad for PETA.

“Vegetarians have more energy and stamina than meat-eaters, and we’re less likely to become fat and keel over from a heart attack. But being a vegetarian isn’t just good for me, it’s good for the animals.”

According to a press release from PETA, “Studies show that fast-food restaurants are more prevalent in low-income, predominantly African-American communities, where families are more likely to take advantage of these cheap, unhealthy options.”

The two schools Salley is expected to attend are public schools both located in predominately African-American neighborhoods.

Today’s the big day for Carter students and tomorrow Williams’ Prep kids will get their veg burger on.

Kudos to Salley for helping make a difference.

World Leaders Arrive At Downing Street For Dinner Ahead Of The G20 Summit

There’s a lot of hoopla going around the web about Michelle Obama touching the Queen during a recent visit to Buckingham Palace.

We don’t know if there was any touching going on at this particular event, but a dinner where a famous British athlete preferred the veggie option is worth talking about.

Dame Kelly Holmes is a double Olympic gold medalist who has set British records in several middle distance running categories, including 600, 800, 1,000, and 1,500 meters distances.

She recently had lunch with First Lady Michelle Obama to celebrate the G20 summit.

Dame Kelly gave kudos to the vegetarian meal of goats cheese starter and potato dumpling.

We’re not sure if she sampled the meat dishes or if she doesn’t eat meat, but it’s cool she preferred the veggie option!

Veg Man Salim Stoudamire Signs With Milwaukee Bucks

Written by Vegetarian Star on Sunday, April 5th, 2009 in Athletes-Games-Sports.

Arizona Wildcats v Utah State Aggies

Veggie athletes are always proud trophies to display, as they refute one of the most common myths about what a vegetarian or vegan diet does to the body: makes it weak.

NBA player Salim Stoudamire has just signed a multi-year contract with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Stoudamire became vegan a couple of year ago. Apparently, he was a little chicken about doing so at first, but decided it was finally time to come out.

“I’ve always wanted to be one because of health, but I never wanted to go eat by myself or have people talk about me,” Stoudamire told myespn.go.com. “But I finally reached a point where I just didn’t care what other people thought, and I didn’t have a problem with eating alone.”

Besides, animals have mommas too.

“I don’t think you should eat something that had a mother. I don’t think that’s right.”

Well said.

Stoudamire played for the University of Arizona, where he led the team to the elite eight in 2005. While playing for the Atlanta Hawks, he averaged 8.0 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.0 assist in 157 games.

Ron Artest Buries The Bad Pet Owner Bone

Written by Vegetarian Star on Friday, April 3rd, 2009 in Animal Issues, Athletes-Games-Sports.

NBA: FEB 24 Trail Blazers at Rockets

Basketball player Ron Artest admits he hasn’t always been the poster boy for pet owners. In 1997, animal control officers were called to his home to find his Great Dane underweight and sick. Neighbors had tipped off authorities that Artest often went away on long trips, leaving his dogs without food and water.

Authorities had been called to Artest’s home three times before and removed dogs from his residence.

Now, Artest has claimed to have cleaned up his act, even working with PETA to record a PSA urging pet owners to spay and neuter their animals.

Is this a permanent change? We sure hope so.

“I was an irresponsible pet owner, and I got in some trouble,” Artest said, in an interview with the Houston Chronicle at chron.com. “PETA came and showed me how to be a better pet owner. A lot of times, it’s a simple thing. One of my problems was that the fence around my home wasn’t safe enough. I had a lot of dogs, and they kept getting out. The thing is, just because you’re irresponsible, it doesn’t mean you don’t love your pets. I loved my dogs. You just need to be more mature and accountable for how you treat your animals. I had to be educated.”

Animal neglect is such an ugly issue. It’s hard to imagine how a person could even commit acts of the nature. So we are hoping that the NBA star who’s earned a bad boy reputation on and off the court won’t be called out for any more fouls in this area.

Tiger Woods Wanted Naked For His Stripes

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, March 18th, 2009 in Animal Issues, Athletes-Games-Sports.

Tavistock Cup Day 2

PETA wants Tiger Woods to do a hole in one wearing none.

Actually, they’ll settle for him stripping down to the essentials to stand up for tigers and other animals in circuses.

They’re hoping he’ll ditch the traditional polo shirt and club for some stripes painted on his body and a sign educating people about the abuse that animals endure.

An excerpt from the letter to the golfer:

“We’re writing to you today with an interesting request. As one of the most successful and celebrated golfers in history, we believe that you could use both your influence and your distinctive first name to help bring attention to the suffering of tigers and other wild animals who are abused in circuses. Would you consider having your body painted to resemble a tiger and then sit in a cage to protest the cruel treatment of tigers, elephants, bears, and other wild animals in circuses? Not only are these animals beaten, shocked, and whipped to make them perform tricks that are confusing and meaningless to them, they are also caged or chained for up to 95 percent of their miserable lives.”

Tiger would make a nice male addition to the heavily female advertisements ran by the group, but somehow, with his clean-cut image, we find it hard to image him doing the stripe-tease.

“I think that’s funny. From personal experience, I eat plenty of stuff with soy and nothing’s happened. I know people who’ve taken testosterone and they’ve gotten gynecomastia from the extra testosterone. “I remember being 13 and seeing a truck on the interstate filled with pigs all headed to the slaughterhouse. One of them made eye contact with me for a while. It was one of the saddest moments I can remember. There was so much intelligence and spirit in him, and here he was, being sent to an awful death.”

Michael Phelps Pot Incident Sparks Just Say No To Pot Roast

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 in Athletes-Games-Sports.

Sports News - February 05, 2009

So most of us know by now that Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, who broke a record last year in taking home gold medals was photographed taking a big o’ whiff of marijuana at a party last November.

Anti-drug campaigners have come up with catchy slogans in the past to steer people away from this lifestyle, but People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has found a whole new reason to ask you to “Just Say No To Pot.”

Pot Roast.

“Don’t be a meathead. Kick the habit,” is written next to a cow, with an additional plea to go vegetarian.

potroat_bb_large

“No one knows if marijuana is addictive (although some people swear it is), but eating meat sure seems to be,” the group said on their website. “Witness all the grownups who can’t even contemplate “giving up meat” even when they are fat, impotent, and at risk for a heart attack. And these are the same people who say that they love animals but go right on causing them immense suffering.”

“Maybe Michael will see our billboard and abandon the pot roast too…”

You can bet most ladies would gladly see Phelps take off his clothes in the name of at least an anti-fur ad for the group.
