FILE: Lost actor Jorge Garcia's precious chihuahua Nunu died on Sunday after being run over by a car right before his flight from Hawaii

Lost star Jorje Garcia is saddened by the recent lost of his pet chihuahua.

While the two were at the airport, Nunn died in his arms after she was struck by a car. The actor took to his blog to relay the news.

“It breaks my heart to tell you that yesterday as we were preparing to all go to the airport Nunu was struck by a car as she crossed the street. She died in my arms.”

“We are buying her in the Pet Gardens at Valley of the Temples in Kaneohe. Nunu hated the water so we couldn’t bring ourselves to having her ashes scattered in the ocean. Three months from now you’ll be able to find a bronze plaque inscribed with just her name there. If you’d like to leave a flower or a toy, I’m sure she’d love it.”

Ricky Gervais Video Urging Yes Vote In Spain Bullfighting Ban

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, June 3rd, 2010 in Actors, Animal Issues, Comedians.

Ricky Gervais is working with the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) in a campaign to outlaw bullfighting in the Catalonia region of Spain.

In a PSA recorded for the organization, Gervais says, “WSPA is trying to stop needless acts of cruelty all over the world. The Catalonian government in Spain is on the verge of voting for a ban on bullfighting. Catalonian MPs will be voting on the issue and you can do your bit to help.”

Next month (July), politicians in Spain will vote on a proposal to end to sport, which injures humans and ultimately kills bulls. Most recently, one of Spain’s most famous matadors, Julio Aparicio, was gored in the throat during a bullfight that left  him in critical condition.

Alec Baldwin–Conklin Dairy Farm Proves Animal Activists Needed

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010 in Actors, Animal Issues.

The premiere of Date Night

Alec Baldwin contributed to the Huffington Post his ideas on politics, specifically, his opinion of what New York city needs in a governor. Baldwin thinks the governor should have many priorities, including reducing air pollution and controlling taxes.

On his final note, Baldwin touched on another area of politics that has nothing to do with New York, but with Ohio and the recent undercover investigation that discovered cows being severely abused by employees.

“On another, certainly more important note, did you see the video posted here regarding regarding the Conklin Farm animal abuse story in Ohio? Let me assure you, someone risked their health and maybe their life to record that video. When you see this, you will never again doubt the necessity for and courage of the animal rights movement.”

Thanks to these activists, one employee has already been charged with several counts of cruelty and hopefully this serves as a wakeup call that mistreatment of farm animals is never politics as usual.

Photo by: Raoul Gatchalian/starmaxinc.com @2010 05/24/10 Tobey Maguire at the 37th Chapli

Tobey Maguire was spotted nibbling on vegetable Tempura at Tao Restaurant in New York City. As a supporter of the Healthy School Meals Act, could he want fried green veggies replacing french fries on school cafeteria menus?

Tao wraps numerous veggies in batter, such as onions, sweet potatoes, asparagus, onions, eggplant and even avocado.

Some tempura batters contain egg, as Vegan Yum Yum points out, but you can easily replace it with a substitute like Ener-g and fry, fry, away. When heating oil suitable for high heat, like Safflower, how can you tell the oil is hot enough before you dip? Vegan Yum Yum says to watch for the fireworks.

“When you drop a batter coated veggie in, little bits of batter will explode off the veggie outward like tempura fireworks. These bits, called tenkasu, are a good indication that your batter is hot enough.”

Get more tips for your homemade veggie tempura, including a recipe at Vegan Yum Yum.

File photo of actor Gary Coleman speaking during a television interview in Los Angeles

Actor Gary Coleman has passed away at the age of 42.

He died this afternoon in a Utah hospital after going into a coma from a hemorrhage that caused bleeding inside his skull. It was his wife’s decision to remove him from life support.

Coleman was best known for his role as Arnold Jackson in the 1970s and 80s hit television series “Diff’rent Strokes,” about a wealthy Manhattan family that adopted the African-American child of their late maid before it was fashionable in Hollywood for white people to do so.

However, he starred in the 2007 A Christmas Too Many, about a dysfunctional family the actor told the Washington Post was forced to “have a vegan Christmas,” reports Vegblog.

According to DVD Talk, the usual holiday fare of deer and turkey are scarce in Malibu, which leaves the family’s best hunter to look at the guinea pigs instead, much to the disgust of his wife, daughter and his vegan son played by Austin O’Brien.

Brendan Hines Hopes To Give Up Fish Meat One Day

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, May 27th, 2010 in Actors, Food & Drink, pescatarian, Research + Science.

FOX ALL-STAR PARTY

Brendan Hines recently became a pescatarian who thinks he may one day stop salivating for flipper as well.

“Soon, eventually, I will maybe consider phasing out the fish, but right now it’s the only thing giving me protein,” Hines told MNN.

Unlike Common, the actor who plays Eli Loker, an expert in deception detection in Lie To Me, doesn’t grasp the fact that fish is meat.

Even more insane, why does Hines think these endangered little fishies are the only items that will give him protein? Somebody tell this guy to take on the role of a nutritionist so he can study up for the part!

The UK Vegetarian Society has listed various non-animal sources of protein, mostly vegan, along with the amount of protein in a serving of each source and whether the amount is considered good, fair or poor.

Chickpeas, beans, tofu and lentils rank highest, with brown rice containing a fair amount of protein that might need buffing up with a little stir fry tofu.

They’ve even gone so far as to list combinations you can eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner to get the minimum recommended daily allowance.

There are plenty of plant sources of protein. You don’t  have to eat fish.

And that’s no deception.
