Quite possibly Hollywood’s newest vegan couple, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi will be honored for their efforts to improve care for animals at the Humane Society’s Genesis Awards next month.

The Wyler Award, named after the late Genesis Award founder, Gretchen Wyler, is given to celebrities or other public figures who have made the most noise in standing up for the better treatment of animals.

Looks like they’ve made the right choice. Where do we start?

Portia and Ellen both became vegans this year, saying no to every animal product, whether flesh or a byproduct. They both were active in getting the word out on Prop 2, the measure which passed in California to allow certain farm animals to move around freely.

They even share their lifestyle with people who are fortunate enough to be in their presence. The wedding reception menu was completely vegan. Ellen has given out vegan items quite a few times on her television show.

Wow. That’s a lot of hard work, guys. Have a cold one on us. You deserve it!

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi threw a big birthday bash for themselves this weekend.

Both ladies’ birthdays are very close together, Ellen turning 51 on January 26 and Portia turning 36 on January 31.

Lots of celebrities were on the invite list, like Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox and her husband David Arquette, Drew Barrymore, Sacha Baron Cohen and Ben Stiller.

A vegetarian meal was served, of course, and DJ Samantha Ronson, girlfriend of Lindsay Lohan, provided the tunes.

Yes, THE Samantha Ronson, who was upset because Californians voted to approve Proposition 2, a measure to improve the conditions of certain farm animals, but also voted to approve defining marriage as between and man and a woman only.

She had blogged about the results:

“I guess people care more about farm animals than they do their fellow man, that’s really sad to me.”

“Yes, i am glad that the chickens will have more room and better conditions as they wait to die, but i just think it’s frightening that people show more compassion for tomorrow’s dinner than for the chef.”

“Yup, miss piggy and chicken little may rest easy, but gay people in florida and california can no longer get married…”

Ouch! PETA wrote to Ronson asking for her support for animals just as much as they would continue their support for equal rights for gays and lesbians.

Ellen and Portia are both vegans, have expressed their concerns for animal rights, and were supporters of Prop 2.

Hopefully, if Sam continues to rub elbows with the happy vegan couple, some of that compassion might rub off on her.
